    1. Re: [RIDDLE-L] RIDDLE - alternate spellings in the census, etc.
    2. This thread brings up a point on how names may accidentally be changed. I have a case in point in the present time. One of my brothers almost had his military records give his last name as "KIDDLE" when the top of the "R" in a signature extended above the perforation line on a form. So watch for the possibility of changed names by copies from torn documents. Bill Riddle

    3. Hi again, I remembered one place I have seen the BIDDLE surname mixed up with the RIDDLE surname and found it again. I have a CD-ROM "Volunteer U.S. Soldiers Military Records 1784-1811". There are 4 Riddle men on it. For William Riddle, it says the following: Riddle, William Captain Maurice's Company Virginia Militia 1807 Private REFERENCE CARD Original filed under Biddle, William Interesting! The other three Riddle's on the CD-ROM are: Riddle, Zachariah Doherty's Regiment of Militia Territory South of the Ohio 1793-1794 Private Riddle, John Brock's Co., I Reg US Levies Lieut. Col. Darke Corporal Riddle, Archibald I (Triplett's) Regiment Georgia Militia 1798 Ensign This CD-ROM is neat, because it has the actual file cards scanned in, so you can see the old original. The Territory South of the Ohio was what KY and TN was called from about 1794-1798. Mary Hill At 06:53 PM 9/17/1999 -0600, you wrote: >Hi Jeannie, > >I appreciate your research. 3. L.D. Riddle (if we have the right one) was born in 1843. We know he had son, Henry Hampton Riddle, born 1893 in Gorman, Eastland Co., TX, just north-west of Comanche County, TX. L.D.R. shows up in the 1870 census in Owen Co. KY but not the 1880 census. So he may have moved to TX in the 1870s. L.D.R. was a teacher and apparently the Comanches had been forced to give up their nomadic ways by the 1870s. Incidentally, I don't find any present-day Riddles in Comanche Co. but plenty in Cherokee County, TX! > Hi all, I just read the email about a branch of the Riddle family being part > Comanche Indian, I think the Riddles were from KY and had moved to TX. 2. John Weiser
    3. Granny Red Crow Barker et. al., > ps Some may not know this but there were natives in the Riddle line We recently heard that our ancestor, Lorenzo Dow Riddle, was married to a Comanche in Texas and had 8 or 9 children with her. We're trying to confirm this and see whether our Henry Hampton Riddle derives from that union or another. And is that the same Lorenzo Dow Riddle, the youngest of 9 children of John Riddle b. 1802, who lived in Owen County, KY? And knowing that Henry Hampton Riddle had 6 children, it looks as though we have some prolific ancestors there! I read a fine piece about Comanches on The Handbook of Texas Online: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/CC/bmc72.html There's another possible tie to natives that I've heard about and that was in the person of the wife of William Riddle of Scott County, KY, Hannah Commack b. 1785 in Virginia. Still on that trail ... John Weiser (with Cathie Riddle Weiser)

    1. [RIDDLE-L] John Thomas Riddle
    2. Karol Stanley
    3. Hello - I've just been reading the comments for a couple of days and haven't posted anything up until now. I'm helping a friend/cousin try to find his ancestors. We know that John Thomas Riddle was born in 1853 in Allegheny County or City PA; his mother, Catherine, if she was indeed his real mother, was widowed before or after he was born, he and his "mother" and possibly others moved to Massillon, OH, and that John worked on the towpath of the canal running from Massillon to Pittsburgh when he was about 11 and for a few years after (until about 1864.) It is possible his name wasn't Riddle when born; possible that he was adopted; possible that his father was killed in the Rev. War. Does anyone have a John Thomas Morris Riddle (name taken from a Bible) in their family, or has anyone run across this name before? Thank you. Sasha Stanley stanlekv@erinet.com

    1. [RIDDLE-L] Riddle arrival to Texas
    2. Hi, I'm not sure how closely the time frame has been set for the arrival of Isaac and family in Texas but Mary Jane Riddle, daughter of Thomas (son of Isaac) was born Feb. 25, 1850 in Titus Co. TX. She gave this birthdate on a pension application. Her sister Martha was born in Kentucky in 1846. (according to census records) I have the actual date for Martha as August 11, 1846. Regards, G-Nell

    2. Hi, Thomas Gregory Riddle, son of Isaac and Anna, married Nancy M. Morris on Oct. 30, 1839 in Boone Co., KY, daughter of Thomas Morris. Does anyone else have a Morris in their Riddle line or has anyone noticed a Morris connection anywhere to this Riddle line? Thank you. G-Nell Winslow

    1. [RIDDLE-L] RIDDLE - alternate spellings in the census, etc.
    2. Hi, all A tip for the confused: I just found my ancestor Coleman Riddle, b. 1801, Grant Co., KY, listed in the census index on Ancestry.com as Coleman BIDDLE. I've been trying to find out who his parents are for awhile and no luck so far. So I did a search on BIDDLE instead, and I find a Stephen BIDDLE in the 1810 Mason Co. census (Fleming Co., where Coleman ended up in, split off from Mason Co. a little after that). I find a Stephen RIDDLE in the 1820 Fleming Co. census, and I find Coleman BIDDLE and Stephen BIDDLE in the 1830 Fleming Co. census. Then I find a Stephen and a Stephen P. BIDDLE in the 1840 Fleming Co. census, no Coleman (I have Coleman's census records already, and he's listed in the 1840 census). Then there are a Stophea and a Thomas BIDDLE listed in the 1850 Fleming Co. census. Obviously, "Stophea" is far more likely to be Stephen. Anyway, try looking for Biddle when you're looking for your RIDDLE people. You might find them. Also try RIDLE, RIDDELL, or RYDELL. P.S. It remains to be seen if Stephen RIDDLE/BIDDLE is Coleman RIDDLE's father. Onward, forever onward in the chase! Jeannie Smith http://members.aol.com/WordGenius/riddle.html

    1. [RIDDLE-L] Riddles moving to Titus County
    2. Charles Smith
    3. Here's a question for researchers of Isaac and Joseph Riddle (mainly Isaac I guess). Does anyone out there know exactly when Isaac, Anna and most of their children moved from Kentucky to Titus County, Texas? Gaylon, you might be able to find out in the Mt. Pleasant library. I'm sure the Historical Society knows or it is in one of the 'Beginnings of Mt. Pleasant' books. While I am on the subject of early Titus County, when it was still Spanish, one of my ancestors, who's son married Isaac Riddle's granddaughter moved to what is present day Titus County in 1835 or 1836. Does anyone know how I can find out more about him? His name was Robert Andrew Cochran and he was murdered on Swannano Creek about 1845 in a dispute with a man named Wilkenson. I would appreciate any help if anyone has any ideas. Charles Smith charles@pandr.demon.co.uk

    3. Hi Robin, There is so much good information in your email! I just wish I had the time right now to take it item by item and respond to you - and go search some more records, and then get back to you. However, I am just too busy for now. Don't loose this email though - there are some very good things here we need to pursue when I have some time. I will file it, and hopefully there will be some time in the not too far distant future to really go for it! 3. Hi Judy, I have seen a two or three books at the FHL that talk a lot about your line. I have not pursued them very much, because my line is different. 1. [RIDDLE-L] Wilson I. Riddle & Mexican Riddles
    2. Robert Riddle
    3. Hi Cousins and other Listers Is anyone out there researching Wilson Irvine Riddle? Wilson Irvine Riddle (1812-1847) moved to Texas in 1839, owned three San Antonio lots in July 1840, and became a merchant that year. He married Elizabeth Menefee in April 1841 in Tennessee. I just saw his name in the Handbook of Texas Online. Thanks to whichever one of you it was who posted this website to the list. I have somehow deleted that message from my inbox. You listed some other sites that I sure would like to see again. Anyway, my interest in W. I. Riddle is that years ago I corresponded with a lady who I think was a descendant of his. Her family had lived for several generations in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, just across the border from Laredo, Texas. So I assume that they are now Mexican citizens. I think she told me that he came originally from Ireland. Bob
