    2. Still trying to search out my Coleman RIDDLE parents. Found some land grants in Mason Co., KY, all along Licking Creek: Isaac Riddle 1777 George Riddle, 1777 James Riddle, 1779 John Riddle, 1779 Also found Isaac Riddle on taxpayers list in Mason Co. 1793 George Riddle, 1796 & 1797. Anyone have any idea how these fellas are related? They're all old enough, probably, to be Coleman Riddle's grandfather. (Coleman is in 1830 Lewis Co., KY, census. Lewis Co. split off from Mason Co. by 1810) Jeannie Smith

    2. I was just in Pendleton County, West Virginia for a couple days and discovered many Ruddles and Riddles. Actually there is a Ruddle town, I found at the local library tons of information on them. It was overwhelming, as I was there with my daughter researching her father's family line, I did not take the time to get into the books there. I do know it showed a George Riddle, and lots of information. Since Pendleton County was formed in 1788 from Augusta, Hardy and Rockingham Co. of Va. there might be lots of information to find there. The courthouse and library are in a small town of Franklin, WV any one wanting to know more just email me. Sylvia Riddle Rennick- - nbrplez@aol.com

    1. Re: [RIDDLE-L] in Texas
    2. In a message dated 09/18/99 8:16:45 PM EST, weiserj@earthlink.net writes: << L.D. Riddle (if we have the right one) was born in 1843. We know he had son, Henry Hampton Riddle, born 1893 in Gorman, Eastland Co., TX, just north-west of Comanche County, TX. L.D.R. shows up in the 1870 census in Owen Co. KY but not the 1880 census. So he may have moved to TX in the 1870s. L.D.R. was a teacher and apparently the Comanches had been forced to give up their nomadic ways by the 1870s. Incidentally, I don't find any present-day Riddles in Comanche Co. but plenty in Cherokee County, TX! >> Hi all, I just have to jump in here, I am so excited to see familiar county names being bandied about ! I have only recently discovered an elderly living relative, my GreatAunt "Dot". She told me a name I could not read on the census records and made a whole new branch on my family tree sprout forth. She told me her mother was Emma Mae ROGERS and Emma's mother was Clarissa Elizabeth RIDDLE, b. KY, said to be half Indian and half Irish, who married Walter Henry ROGERS, of NJ. The couple travelled by wagon train west and Emma was born at Fort Bridger in July 1868 - the first white child born there after it became a territory. She also said that when she was about nine years old (ca 1926) the family was living in Fort Worth Tarrant Co. TX, when a letter came from the State of Wyoming offering a land grant in commemoration of Emma's birth, but they were too poor to move there. (I have written to the State Historical Society asking about this story but so far have not heard back from them). In the 1920 census of Gainesville in Cooke Co. TX, Emma, age 51, is married to William Scott BLAKE. The couple, with their three children, Winnie age 21, Wesley age 9, and my grandmother Annabelle BLAKE age 17, and a grandaughter - my GreatAunt "Dot" age 3, all lived with his mother-in-law (Clarissa Elizabeth) ROGERS, age 74, a widow (whose maiden name is RIDDLE, ala Aunt Dot). I still cannot read that first name, which looks kind of like Tia-Ziu (??) (Annabelle (3rd wife) married Benjamin Lee Herrington ca 1920. His family with second wife is found in 1900 census of Comanche Co. TX. The HERRINGTON and RICHBOURG or RICHBURG families are found all over Eastland, Hamilton, Erath and surrounding counties in TX, moving there ca 1870's) The 1920 census records "Clarissa" and both her parents were born in KY, and Emma was born in WY and her father was born in NJ. Does any of this tie in with someone's research ? thanks Kerry Herrington

    3. Hi Jeanie One of the initial problems that I had in locating my gg grandfather, Joseph Pierce Riddle was that he was listed as Joseph BIDDLE in the 1850 Census Index for Texas. Until now I thought his misspelling was unique. Now I realize that it is more common than I thought. Thanks for alerting everyone to the problem. 1. Re: [RIDDLE-L] natives in VA
    2. Hi all, I just read the email about a branch of the Riddle family being part Comanche Indian, I think the Riddles were from KY and had moved to TX. It's always been told in my Riddle branch that we were part Cherokee Indian but I haven't been able to verify that yet. The first genealogist that I had helping me said it was almost impossible to confirm an Indian heritage as on census records they had a B beside their name as did people of negro race. But as of now it doesn't make much difference one way or the other as I can't find any relatives past my ggrandfather anyway. But as it is something I have always believed I really would like to find out the truth one of these days. These are the people I'm still searching for: James Robert Riddle-b.1840--I believe in Henrico Co.,VA. He had a brother named- John Flemming Riddle-b.1835-I believe in Henrico Co.,VA. Both brothers married and lieved in Sussex Co.,VA. James married Alma Jeannett Sheffield in 1865. Hoping some one sees a connection, thanks. Charlotte A.

    1. [RIDDLE-L] Thomas S. Riddell m. Sarah L. McGaw, Hancock Co., IL
    2. Gregg's "History of Hancock Co., IL", published in 1880 indicates: "Sarah L. [McGaw] married Thos. S. Riddell, and lives near her father's." Sarah's father is Samuel P. McGaw. Her mother, Alvira J. Hopkins, died on April 5, 1855. The township in question here is Prairie, which is in the middle of the county, fairly near the county seat, Carthage, IL. {{Thanks to Jim McMillan at mcmillan@advancenet.net for the information.}} Does anybody recognize this Thomas S. Riddell and Sarah L. (McGaw) Riddell? Thomas have any brothers or cousins named David Riddle from Ireland? I'm trying to determine if there may be a family relationship between Thomas S. Riddell and my ancester David Riddle m. Margaret E. McIntosch, born 1833-1835 and married in Ireland, immigrants to Hancock Co., IL, by no later than about 1862. Thanks in advance.
