    3. Tom: This is Mike Conners and I too have a Eli Riddle. My cousin Sue Larson and myself are the ones looking for Samuel Riddle or Riddell b. 1790 in Maryland. We have a Francis (Frank) H Riddle who was married to a Mary C in the 1900 census of we think Ralls Co. but it may not be. They have a Eli Riddle as a son and another one I could not make out but it looks like Ignatius? The census taker used alot of ink and he should have blotted it first, anyway they did have a Eli. Sue Larson's Francis (Frank) M Riddle was in Shelbyville Mo. but she said her mother mentioned someone in Iowa. We can't figure who this might be. I have a Edward James(Jimmy) Riddle who was in Macomb IL.and got into some trouble and headed for Burlington. This was my GGgrandfather Richard L Riddle's son by his second marriage to Sophie Bloodgood. Richard's first wife was Martha C Easton and she died between 1870 and 1880. All this is that we have a Eli and there is mention of someone going to visit relatives in Iowa. Mike Conners conners@jps.net ----- Original Message ----- From: Thomas L. 2. Russell D Merryman
    3. Hi Riddle's list (everyone)! In another of my family trees unrelated to my Riddle line (of which I am a descenant of Wm. Riddle - the Rev. war soldier). In another family tree, there is another Riddle (gentleman)!! Any ways, to cut to the chase... an ancestor of mines' second wife (or their relatives descendants) who were named Krebs married a William Riddle, most likely the same one as I mention about a month ago as listed on a "Northern Sympazthers List" that fled from Okla., to Ark., for safety... This William Riddle married Rebecca Krebs, Abt 1868, in Okla. They had one child named Delight Riddle b. 1869 in the Choctaw Nation; d. 1881. Well, maybe this may help someone sometime?! Delight, is burried in Skullyville Cem. I don't know if it is a marked headstone (grave) or not, some of them, there are now longer marked? There is American Indian in that line and French going back to a Johann Krebs born in 1670 in Neumagen, Moselle, Germany... Regards, Russ Merryman

    3. I do not have a James Riddle born in 1750 but I do have a William Riddle who was born around that time in VA. I wonder if it was a brother to William? There are some James Riddles born later and yes...the difference in the name Riddle/Riddell is shown in some of our papers. It may have been different back at this time. I wish I knew? What a jigsaw puzzle. I love it though. Could I have a copy of his will? Could you send it over the internet to me via email? Thanks. I TRULY DO wish I could help you out some. 3. Looks like we both saw this note about the same time! It sure would be nice to "crack this" open. Life is busy -again-. The kids' activities have entered "full tilt", and we are once again in the taxi business. I've been so busy, that I don't feel like doing anything (once I get home). I check around to see if I can find any Riddle info, but no luck. I did have a few successes in other families this summer. I just keep bouncing around, that way I don't get discouraged. Have you tried the new version of PAF? I think that it has everything that FTW does, without the annual charges for "updates". My Brother-in-Law has even switched. Well, I might as well go. I can't seem to think tonight. 3. John, do you happen to know any of the siblings for John? At least two of us from this list are trying to find the parents for a William Riddle (probably born KY or VA). But, we continually hit that famous "brick wall". It sure seems like there could be some connections between the two, who knows. I hope that we can find a connection <somewhere>. 3. Hi Gene, Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to give me and others your detailed message. Let me answer some of your points here and let me pose another question. > Don't forget, I'm not sure of your John (Lewis) Riddle as I've never seen > him listed anywhere with the middle name LEWIS. Shawn Coomer includes "Lewis" as John's middle name. He writes: " I also have original pages from the family Bible that give birth, death & marriage info." I should be getting copies of those pages in the mail in the next couple of days, and I will forward those to you. I have looked at the 1850 census page for John Riddle of Owen County, KY, and I noticed that the ages (as listed there) between each of John's nine children and the next was exactly 2 years. I wondered whether this was real or the census taker's shortcut? [I myself worked as a census taker during the 1980 census, and I recall that guessing was allowed as a last resort.] The birth year that Shawn Coomer has for Lorenzo Dow Riddle corresponds precisely with what I had, based on a birth certificate for one of LDR's children (born in Gorman, TX, by the way). LDR had some 8 children, so we still have our work cut out for us. Regarding my "facts taken together" and William Riddle's family (of Scott County, KY), I should have done the following: 1. given separate attribution to the "facts", so that the reader might better weigh each "fact's" validity 2. qualified my reference to John as John Lewis (they might not be one and the same, after all), and 3. have stated that G. Divine knows of 6 other offspring by Hannah, besides the 3 I named (there could be more). My question is two-fold, and relates to William Riddle's line. a. Doesn't John Riddle having "Lewis" as a middle name support his being William's son, just as you derive from James LEWIS Riddle? b. Yesterday, I was reading in "The History of the Ancient Ryedales" by G. T. Ridlon, around p.377, about the Riddles of Orange County, VA, which county abuts Fauquier County. From memory, it suggests that many of the Riddles who derive from this branch have Lewis as part of their names. I did see, curiously, a James Riddell (b. 1850) whose son, William Riddell was born in Orange County, died in Kentucky and "presumably had a family and descendants". Is your (perhaps our) William Riddle mentioned in Ridlon's book? Regards, John (with Cathie Riddle Weiser)

    3. Hi John, No, I don't mind whatever you choose to do. However, you do not have all the information I have and what's out there now is not complete. If you will send me your snail mail address, I'll give you what you are asking for. My records are from wills, marriage records, censuses and personal correspondence with living Riddle relatives and their family records. None is from the LDS which I find not too reliable unless they provide also the legal documents that support their assertions. I could send them anything and they would pass it on without verifying anything. Don't forget, I'm not sure of your John (Lewis) Riddle as I've never seen him listed anywhere with the middle name LEWIS. In William Riddel, Sr.s will he names all his children by both marriages. There is a John Riddle. In your post you named him John Lewis Riddle, Sr. b: May 05, 1804 and I don't believe I said that. I believe I named him John Riddle, b: 1802 and I did not have a date of death for him. Following where you state "(per Mr. Divine, William had 6 other offspring by Hannah):, I didn't say that either. I said "They had 9 children that I know of". Then I listed my ancestor, James Lewis Riddle and some information about him and his wife Sarah Ann Bramblett. I hereby disavow any agreement with the "taken together" listing. Per William Riddel Sr.'s will filed in the Scott County Court House in Georgetown, Kentucky, his wife and children were: " I give and bequeath to my wife Hannah Riddle"..."to my son John Riddle & daughter Polly Caldwell (children by a former wife), ...."my children by my present wife (to wit) William Riddle, Benjamin Riddle, Sally Thomas, Louisa Luttrall, Anderson Riddle, Merit Riddle, George Riddle, Lavina Riddle & James W. Lewis Riddle". These are the two children by his first wife, Flizabeth McCamack and the nine (9) children by his second wife, Hannah. I do not know her maiden name. According to the death notice for William Riddle, died September 07, 1859 in Scott County, KY, on file at the Kentucky historical Society in Frankfort, Kentucky, William Riddle was born in Fauquier County, Virginia and his occupation was a cooper. I have copies of marriage bonds in Fauquier County for three children of William and Elizabeth L. Riddle (the parents of William Riddle b. 1777). They were William m. Betsey (Elizabeth) McCamack (father: Henry McCamack), bond dated October 29, 1798; Betsey Riddle m. Reubin Corbin, bond dated January 26, 1801; and Katy Riddle m. Cornelius Anderson, bond dated September 6, 1790. I have a copy of the marriage bond December 24, 1807 for the marriage of William Riddel, Sr.(father of William Riddle b. 1777, second marriage) to Jemima Latham. (Please note the date of 1807)! Through census records and family records: John Riddle m. Martha Commack August 26, 1827, Owen County, KY. Mary A (Polly) Riddle m. D. D. Caldwell (date and place not verified). William Riddle b.1806 m. Nancy Coburn December 23, 1842. Benjamin Riddle b.1809 m. Acka ?. Anderson Riddle b.1814 m. Martha Jane Offutt. Merit Riddle b.March 26, 1818 m. Permelia M. Estes August 3, 1853. George Riddle b.1820 m. Susana Donovan. Lavina Riddle b.1822 m. John J. Maddox July 9, 1853. James W. Lewis Riddle b.1824 m. Sarah Ann Bramblett February 3, 1848, Owen County. Sally Riddle b.1834 m. ------ Thomas. Louisa Riddle b.1836 m. John Luttrell. To answer a question: Yes researchers do often withhold sharing their information for various reasons. (One good reason is to be sure their research information is provided by themselves and reflect accurately their work , whether their work is correct or incorrect). To answer a question: William, b.1777 was born in Fauquier County, Virginia. My William Riddel is NOT the one born in Brunswick County, Virginia. The August 13, 1850 Owen County, Kentucky census on line 22 lists a Lorenzo D. Riddle as a 7 year old son of John Riddle ( whom this record says he was born in KY). It shows John as Age 48. It also lists: Martha, age 47; William, age 23; Louisa(?) J, age 21; Garrison(?) R., age 19; John S(?), age 17; Thomas H., age 15; Martha, age 13; Catharine, age 11; James G., age 9; and Larenzo D., age 7. I do have Riddle / Bramblett relationships which I'll save for another time. Certainly I'll be happy to provide you with the documentation I have accumulated so long as it pertains to the ancestors of John Riddle the son of William Riddle and Elizabeth McCamack. You have never told how you learned the name of John LEWIS Riddle and the date and place of birth. Will you share this with me. My research in most all cases was obtained by myself at the site of the source available. Lots of travel and lots of time. I could not download the attachments. Not enough memory left. This is getting long and I'm tiring out. (I'm not young, you know). Let me hear from you. Gene Divine e-mail at aedreddivine@hcnews.com 713 Aqua Vista Drive Granbury, TX 76049-1608 (817) 279-6347

    3. Thanks Gaylon for that. I had heard bits and pieces of that, but it was good to get the whole story. It also solves a bit of question I had in mind about Cuff's name. A couple of more questions come to mind. Any idea when Cuff's parents moved to the Bottom? Where is the Bottom in today's terms? I wonder when Kendall and Kizzie Lewis moved to the Bottom? It was my understanding that Robert Cochran came to present day Titus County in 1835 or 1836. Anyone know where I can verify this? He was supposedly heading for Stephen F. Austin's encampment and only made it as far as NE Texas. Did his family come with him? Charles Smith charles@pandr.demon.co.uk

    2. Bill, You said you could go back 2 generations. Can you tell me who the parents of John S. Riddle were and if he had any brothers and sisters? Also, I had heard that the family came from Ireland or Scottland. Do you have any information on this? I am waiting for the death certificate to arrive for John Wister Riddle but Texas is very slow about sending these out. I'm looking forward to hearing from you again. Betty
