    2. Thanks Charlie. I was thinking there was a lady who had one out though. Charlie did you see my post on the Lawson and Riddle line the other day. Just a 2nd and I'll pull it up. I'm curious if anyone on the list knows the fellow who was doing the research. Sent him msg yesterday. But no reply. Iwonder abt some of these Email addy's that have the edu is that a college or school type of addy. Gerald runs a Data Base on all Lawson's is how he came up with this info. The Tony Sharp is the one I'm wondering if you have come across him. As he would be my kin. 2. You know, somewhere in all my files, I have a Joel Merritt (no relationship to my husband) that keeps appearing with my RIDDLE/PATTERSON family in Rhea Cty., TN. Question that pops up, could your Merritt Riddle possibly have been born of a RIDDLE/MERRITT marriage and he was given his mother's maiden name as a first name? I realize this could be a little far-fetched, but it is something to think about. I will dig through all my tons of RIDDLE/PATTERSON information and try to find out more about Joel Merritt of Rhea Cty. TN. 2. Hi Carla: Sounds like your family was just like my Dad's family. My Dad was very tight-mouthed about his family, he would say something in bits and pieces and when I tried to get him to say more, he changed the subject. I guess our ancestors never really thought that we might want to know about them. Did you see the information I posted on this site about a month ago regarding Frank Riddle? If not, let me know and I will post it again. Keep the faith and don't give up. Dream Back the Buffalo, Sing Back the Swans Carolyn Condray-Merritt gggranddaughter of Terry Riddle [email protected]

    3. Hello Carolyn, Good to hear from you. Thanks for your e-mail. I love hearing about all the different Riddle families. My mother was a Riddle, going back to John W. Riddle, Sr.. I just started researching my Riddle ancestors about three months ago. I have learned so much and met so many great people. It has been very enlightening. I really knew very little about my Mother's family. Her father, Ranzie Riddle, died when she was a young girl and all her grandparents were gone long before I came on the seen. And for some reason her brothers and sisters have never really shared much about there ancestors. I think they were afraid they would find murderers and crazy people in the family. So they decided to leave well enough alone. But then I came along and started asking lots of questions. I've really tried to find out about our Native American roots, but haven't had much luck. My 3rd great grandmother was Nellie Cook Riddle, married to John W. Riddle, Jr. and she was said to be full blooded Cherokee. But I don't know anything else. If you've seen the last Riddle Newsletter, I am the Carla in one of the articles. Somehow we kind of left out my last name, which is French. Please keep in touch. Let me know what you find. God Bless, Carla Sparks French

    2. Hi Carla: I am currently in the process of researching Tobey "Winema" Riddle. I know that her and her husband Frank were interpreters and that she and her husband lived with the Modocs for awhile. Winema was considered according to some historians as a heroine of the Modoc Lava Beds massacre. Their son Jefferson C. Riddle did write the book The History of the Modoc War. I have been trying to locate a copy of this book and have several sources trying to track a copy down for me. Although from what I understand, Jefferson's book was not too kindly toward the Modoc side of the wars, this may have been just one researcher's impression though. Winema was a peace seeker. Frank was a rancher and was one of the original Riddle families to come to Oregon. I will keep you and all Riddle researchers informed of what I find as I go along in my research. I have recently purchased several books on the history of the Indian Wars and I am sure that I will find out more.
