Ok Thanks Jim. And since your there do you have any info on the Bestsy Riddle that I just posted. Jim I'm a descendent of Wm Hills one of the co-founders of Hartford Connecticut. Wish I had know abt that when I was stationed at Otis AFB back in the Late 50's and lived in Wareham Mass. Stan
If this one pans out like I think it might I will have a dbl link to the Hills. And everyone on else in our tree will also have link to the Hills of Colonial America. David and you to Frank and who ever else thats part of our Rono Indiana, Perry County Riddles. I have already sent a msg to Julie to see if she has collected info on this branch of the Hills, Of course I could be wrong, but since one of our ancestors was in Maryland its a good chance Bestsy is related to which ever one of ours that was there. I haven't checked, but doesn't Mary Hills book have a lot of information on William Riddle and Harriet Rogers/Roberts Riddle and their descendants? I haven't been able to pinpoint the connection, but I have a very strong feeling that my James R. Riddle, Father to Terry is somehow connected through this line. How exciting for your brother to come across these gravestones. Dream Back the Buffalo, Sing Back the Swans Carolyn Condray-Merritt gggranddaughter of Terry Riddle [email protected]

Thanks one and all. I have been to Mary's web page and read same. If my health ever gets better I'd like to take a drive upto the olde Riddle home place on the Clinch River. With out looking at map I would say its up above Sneedville. The place you cant get to from Knoxville. I get a kick out of that saying. It's really you cant get there from here. I use to service some of the Banks in Sneedville. So have an Idea of what the area is like. In case I have never mentioned it on the List. There are or were some Riddle's over the other side of Oak Ridge Tenn, between it and Oliver Springs. In Anderson County. They had a Drug Store by that name is the reason I know abt it. So if any of you have some Tenn Riddles you cant find, then try Anderson County Tenn. They may be some of those S.W. Virginia kin. Stan
Need some help here... My brother emailed regarding a plaque and some gravestones that he came upon while hiking in the Appalachian Trail... I am still a bit confused on what he is saying so I will post the message that he sent to me: ---- I came across three graves. Two were brothers killed by Confederate Soldiers on their return home. And the third was a thirteen year old nephew that had ran out to meet them. The nephews name was Mallard Haire. There was a plaque stating who had erected the gravesite. They were descendants of Mallard Haire. One of the names was a C. E. Riddle. The brothers that were killed were named Shelton. ---- After a bit of clarification he sent this: This happened in and around 1863 in an area on the Appalachian Trail known as Big Bald, Tennessee. Mallard Haire was caught in the crossfire when he ran out to meet them. There was a plaque by the gravestones that said something like: These gravestones were erected by the descendants of Mallard Haire. And one of the names on it was C.E. Riddle I am still unsure about where C. E. fits in... I do not know if he is referring to him being listed on the plaque or on one of the gravestones. I have this information on a James G. Riddle and Lucy Smith who had a son that I only have down with initials as C. E. Riddle born 1845 with no death date. James G married a J. W. Rogers in 1860 and they had 6 kids with birth dates starting in 1862 and ending 1870. Anyway, this C. E. is my 2nd cousin 3 times removed. With common ancestors being Capt. William RIDDLE and Harriet ROGERS/ROBERTS. Anyone? Saun, I believe that you are referring to Mary Hill. She devoted a huge amount of time into the research of William Riddle who was hung by Col. Benjamin Cleveland and his descendants. The web address that I have for her is http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/h/i/l/Mary--E-Hill/ hopefully the research is still available. I found it well worth the cost and would have gotten it even if she wasn't discussing my ancestors. Found this web site. Thought others might want to have look see. Of course its a commercial sell but I found it interesting anyway. http://www.infokey.com/hall/welcome.htm Stan
Stan, I believe you are referring to the book Mary Hill wrote. I believe that is her name and she works at the Church of Later Day St.'s in Utah. I could be wrong but you might ask Richard, or Jim. They seem to be the ones that do more of the upkeep or are the upkeep of the Riddle sites on the web. If I am incorrect please forgive my old mind as it is kind of forgetful. Good Luck! Eva
