Distance wise I do not know how far, but Tullahoma, TN is in the south central part of the state and Hamilton/Rhea CO is south eastern part of the state. All I know is that James R. Riddle went to Rhea/Hamilton County in the earlys 1800s and I assume he came from the Mecklenburg NC area with Robert Patterson since they had adjoining lands in TN. But, we all know what happens when we assume. I would be interested in finding out what you have on your Riddles that you do know about, it is possible that James and your John were brothers. Sounds like your Dad was like so many of our Dads, they just didn't talk about their pasts. Why, I do not know. But, one thing I do know, all of our Riddles and other ancestors are looking down on us and having a huge laugh at us trying to find out who we are and who they were. Barge right in Robert. I think that is a very good theory regarding the Riddle towns and is one that should be looked into. I did not know there was a Riddleton, TN nor a Riddle, ID. All you cousins out there, let's check this out. Thanks Robert and keep barging in. Hi all. I assume that you all know that Frank Riddle who married Tobey Riddle (later called Winema), the interpreters for the Modoc Indians, was born in KY and traveled to Oregon Territory. At this point in time, I do not know the age when he left KY, but I would assume it to be when he was very young, maybe about 12 years of age. I will keep researching that end of it. Maybe someone on our list could give me that information. Tobey was about 12 when Frank bought her for two horses. Later on Frank and Tobey did get married in a civil ceremony. I assume this to be around 1850-1860s. I have discovered a lot of interesting information regarding their life acting as interpreters during the Modoc Indian War. Frank was interpreter for the Peace Commission and for the Army and Tobey, of course, was the interpreter for Capt. Jack and the Modocs. Where is Rhea Co. Tn. in relationship to Tullahoma Tn. My grandfather John A Riddle was from there He was the son of Harman Riddle I know that he had two brothers I have not been able to find any records of them. If you could help I would appreciate any help I can get. Mary Worsham Savannah Ga.
Dave: Yes, I do know that Riddle is North of G.P. I lived almost all my life in Southern Oregon and have been in and through the little towns of Riddle and Canyonville many many times. At that time, I never realized there could be a connection to the town of Riddle. Of course, my Dad never mentioned it, in fact in has been only the last year that I found out I had Riddle kin. Incidentally, I may have posted this several months ago on this List, but my Dad had a Navy buddy (WWII) named David Thomas Riddle. Our families kept in touch long after Dad and David retired from the Navy. The last known address I have for him was in Redondo Beach, CA. I believe his wife's name was Betty or Elizabeth. Are you related to him in any way? I do not know anything about him such as where he was from. I am now wondering if he was really just a Navy buddy or if he in fact was related to my Dad. David T. Riddle served aboard both the USS Hornet and the USS Wasp, while my Dad served aboard other Navy ships during WWII and was never aboard the same ship as David. Hmmmm, this does lead me to speculate that maybe David and Dad were kin. Sorry to ramble on like this, but thought you might know something about this David Riddle. When you visited the little town of Riddle, Oregon, did you find any history on the Riddles that the town was named after? Hi Robert, Thought I would throw my two cents worth into the pot. I believe that Riddle Oregon is named for George W. Riddle or his kin. This particular George W. Riddle tvld to Oregon with my Sanders ancestors. I cant tell you off the top of my head where they actually started the wagon train from. But it may have been Wisconsin. But my family history book., 330yrs of the Hills in Amercia of which I'am a descendent. Mentions Geo and his tvlg with my ancestors and his writing of the book Early Days of Oregon? My sister has the book that Geo wrote abt his tvls to Riddle Oregon. He was a young lad of abt 10 to 12yrs old when he made the trip. Riddle Oregon PTA was selling the book yrs back. I guess that is where my mother bought her copy. Well Robert I havent heard the story but it sure seems to fit mine and David Riddles kin. As they were Ky and Indiana Riddles. Stan Brookshier, Sr.
Pardon my barging in here. My dad tells the story of seven Riddle brothers (of 13 children) who headed west from Cumberland, KY area in early mid 1800's. Each stopped at assorted places along the way hence Riddle, ID, Riddle, OR , and maybe even Riddleton,TN and a slew of non Riddle names in MO. Any body else heard of that "theory" ? I have been to Bend many times on the way up north to Lewiston Idaho. It also is a neat town and really nice people there. In the cemetery at Waitsburg Wa, close to where my G Grandmother is interned we found a stone for a Ulysses Riddle b. 1887 d. 1911. We/I have put out queries but have not received anything back on him. Carol. I being a Riddle, just stopped in the town for gas (at the time was really not interested in family history) just to say I was there. My father was very secretive about his roots. Years later so to speak, I had to buy a bigger shovel to unearth information. It might be also that his dad never told him much. I have never run across another Riddle during my 20 yrs in the service. I also do not know the D T Riddle you are talking about. Only wish I knew. You may be right and both your father and D T were relatives. I guess this is why we do this, pain or victory. Thanks. David. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2001 12:58 PM Subject: Re: [RIDDLE-L] Computer Problems > Dave: Yes, I do know that Riddle is North of G.P. Hi David: Thank you for the information. I am forwarding it on to my Pendergrass cousins up in Washington and maybe they can make a connection. I still haven't been able to firm up my TN Riddles with any of the OR/WA Riddles, but I am sure I will one of these days. I live in Bend, Oregon which is located on the east side of the state. As soon as we get the spring thaw and the mountain passes don't have any more chance of storms dumping snow on them, I will drive over to Riddle, Oregon and look around. When I do, I will let all of you know what I find out. Thanks again for the information. Stan, That could be something you contracted in the Service overseas, Why don't they get you two together and compare the places you were in and go from there. I know these Dr.'s are not half as good as they used to be unless you are lucky and get a good one that cares. I know a bunch of them here came from India and at first they seem to care and then they start subscribing medicine that I wouldn't take after checking with my medical book and a pharmacist friend we have. I sometimes think they are here to get rid of us. No I really don't mean that but it does seem that way. I hope they find out what is wrong and can help you find what it is. So sorry to hear of your being short of breath. Are you allergic to anything you might have eaten or any medications you may have taken? Think hard Stan as that sounds like something you may be allergic to and of course it may not. Keep in touch. Eva

You are welcome. My people were about 5 miles from the epicenter of the quake but little damage, broken mirrors etc. Things that can be replaced. They are all fine thank god. My grandfather came west around 1882 or 1883 from Perry County Indiana. His father William Henry Riddle b. 1818 d. 1869 was married to Malinda Weedman. My grandfathers name was Henry Washington Riddle b. 1862, d. 1947 at Colfax Wa. A little history. After the death of his father in 1869 the family stayed at Crawford/Perry County until around 1882 when his mother and some of the children came west to settle and to Wa State at the Waitsburg/Walla Walla and My father Charles William was b. 1899 at Dayton Wa which is about 30 miles east of Walla Walla. Malinda Weedman Riddle died in 1888 at Waitsburg and is interned there with three of her grandchildren. My father finally settled at Lewiston Idaho where he passed in 1990 at the great age of 91. He was a wonderful gentleman and father. I was blessed. In the past I have seen where you posted that you were going over the hill to visit the oregon site. Was wondering where you are located at. Hope this helps.
