    1. Re: [RIDDLE-L] Benjamin Riddle and Francis Hawkins Riddle
    2. The Fort Wayne, IN library has a work by Alice Young Duncan entitled "Stephen Riddle and His Descendants" which they will print and mail to you for a nominal cost. Stephen did have a son named Benjamin who according to Mrs Duncan married Mary Slater in Rowan County, NC. She died in 1812 and in 1824 Benjamin moved to Tennessee where he and his second wife Nellie Harnline had 4 children. The Duncan work makes no mention of a Frances Hawkins.

    2. I know there was a lot of Benjamin Riddle's but what I found on my Benjamin Riddle was in the Athens County Court House in McMinn, Tenn. I did find a Randolph Ridle, (note one D in last name spelling which could have been an error.) living next to Benjamin in the 1790 I believe census in NC. Other than that I have never found concrete evidence to document that he is the son of Randolph and Jemimah Hawkins RIddle. I can document the family on down, but I cannot document Benjamin and Francis Hawkins Riddle marriage records. I have been trying to locate where their land deeds are on Indian lands in NC and Tn. I do know McMinn County did not become a county until 1819 form the judge in McMinn a few years ago. It was named McMinn County for a Mr. McMinn and that was made McMinn County then. I am sure the lands are kept in the Indian Records somewhere in N.C. or Washington wherever they keep those older records. I have written many places and have made many telephone calls but to no avail. Someday, maybe I will find them. If any of you can help I would greatly appreciate it. Now I am told my Benjamin Riddle, married to Francis Hawkins is a son of Stephen Riddle. I would appreciate where the documentation is so I can also document it in my book as being correct means being correct. I like to document each person in here and not just guess as to whom my ancestors are. (Kings- Queens-waifs-or just plain ordianary people like we are.) Does this make sense to any of you? Please let me hear from you. wrakj

    2. Wanda, when I began my research I knew absolutely nothing about how to go about it. I was checking some census microfilm (forgot the year I was looking at) and there was a Harmon Riddle in either Jack County or Clay County. I took the names to my parents house and Dad said he remembered a Harmon. Whether he was a relative or not I do not remember. I then moved away and didn't get back into it until much later. My parents lived in Jack County Texas if this helps you any. wrak

    2. I may be telling something you already know about Thomas RIddle, but here goes anyway. Texas Confederate Veterahs Home (a.k.a,. The Old Confederates Home) was ;pcated at 1600 West Sixth Street just east of the MoPac Expressway between Patterson, West Lynn, and the Clarksville Community. The facility was constructed in 1886 by and for vetterans of General John B. Hood's Texas Brigade. It was formally dedicated on March 13, 1887. Its construction and early years of operation were entirely financed by private funds. In 1891, management of the home was taken over by the state of Texas. The Confederate Veterans Home continued to house aging veterams well into the twentieth century. Veterans, and their spouses, of the Spanish American War and the First World War were admitted to the home in 1939. In 1943, when the number of Civil War Veterans had dwindled to only six, the State Hospital began using the facility's excess capacity to house mental patients. The las Confederate veteran, Thomas Riddle, died in 1954 age the age of 108. The historic structure was raazed in 1970 and replaced by the Unibersity of Texas' Gateway Apts. for married students and their families. Confederate Street, off West Lynn, still exists today. This was taken from the Texas Confederate Veterans Home. This can be located at Texas State Library - Many of the the former residents (and spouses) of the Confederate Veterans Home are buried in the confederate Section of the State Cemetery in East Austin. The cemetery's web site includes a useful database search. www://www.edu/courses/mis311t/history/hist002.htm This is where I found it. He would have been born about 1846 but it did not say where or if he had any family. wrakj The person that wrote this states that they have kept other personal comments out of this Austin History website), my paternal grandfather worked at the Veterans Home in the late 1920's, to help finance his educatiion at the University Of Texas. In addition, he says he and his wife lived in the Gateway Apartments during the mid-1970's when they were students at UT. If you visit the grounds today,, you can still see the rock retaining walls constructed by the veterans a hundred years ago. Thought this might help someone if they are looking for a Thomas Riddle.

Sam could have been from MD, or a local in KY, or even from VA. We know the two of them moved west to MO in the 1830's with a group of other families connected in one way or another to his wife's family, the Clarvos. Those families, the Leakes, Elliotts, Mudd, Gough, and Arnetts had a great number of intermarriages. For all we know, Sam was an orphan! Sue
