Thats whenI found out abt the Mayor and Pkwy bit. Wasnt into genealogy then. Stan

    3. The following is from Some More Riddles of North Carolina by Richard Riddle, 1994. "Riddles of Riddle's Ferry, North Carolina" Marsh states (Ref. 3, p. 17) that the first Riddle in North Carolina was Stephen Riddle, born 1730 in Frederick County, Maryland and is shown on the 1757 and 1759 Rowan Co. Tax List. Stephen was the son of Benjamin and Margaret Riddle (Ridley) of Frederick County (Prince George), Maryland. Stephen had three brothers, Zachariah (Jacariah), John, and Benjamin II. Zachariah moved to Virginia, then to Orange County, NC. Nettie Lee Benson, publisher of a Riddle Newsletter, Professor of History at the University of Texas, and an avid Riddle family researcher from Austin, Texas, is descended from this Zachariah Riddle (Ref. 4, Sheek, p. 9). John moved to Prince George County, Maryland. Benjamin II, cut out of his fathers will, remained in Frederick County, Maryland. Stephen moved to Rowan County, NC, prior to 1757. Ridlon refers to this family as "Riddles of Riddle's Ferry, North Carolina", (Ridlon, p. 369). By 1777, Stephen established a ferry on the Yadkin River near what is now Clemmons, NC. This ferry remained in the Riddle family and in operation until it was sold by his son, Benjamin Riddle, to Thomas Oakes in 1824. Benjamin and his family moved to Hardeman County, Tennessee. A comprehensive genealogy of this family has been compiled by Ann Ellis Sheek a descendant of Stephen and Elizabeth Douthit Riddle. It has been my pleasure to have known Ann Sheek for over 30 years. I know her to be a tireless and meticulous researcher. Her background in factual journalism (Western Electric, Technical Publications Editor and Winston-Salem Journal-Sentinel Newspaper, Research Specialist) becomes apparent in her book, "Descendants of Stephen and Elizabeth Douthit Riddle of Rowan County, North Carolina" published by the author in 1982. Stephen, Elizabeth, and their son John' are buried in the cemetery of Mount Pleasant Methodist Church in what is now Tanglewood Park, Clemmons, NC, near the Yadkin River. Much of the land once owned by this Riddle family was acquired by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco family and used as a residence then given to Forsyth County as Tanglewood Park. The old church and cemetery, located near the Tanglewood Golf Club House, has been designated as an historic landmark and is maintained by Tanglewood Park. 2. Stan---All Riddles count, don't they? As it turns out, just after I put out the query about Stephen and the possibility that John might be his brother, I found that he did indeed have a brother named John along with other siblings. It now is John's son John that I am trying to trace. Did I send to all the cousins the reasons why we seek information about our ancestors? It keeps us out of the pool halls and off the streets, and we want to find out as much about them as possible before we meet them. ---Jim Riddle

J. Clarke Publishing Company 1921 George Treadway RIDDLE (picture available): George Treadway Riddle, president of the Franklin Bank of St. Louis, his native city, was born February 22, 1947, his parents being Colonel Alexander and Mary E. (TREADWAY) RIDDLE. The father was a native of Pennsylvania, born in 1802. The paternal grandfather, who was the founder of the American branch of the family, came to the new world from Scotland and crossed the mountains into western Pennsylvania, settling on a farm near Pittsburgh, where he resided until his death. His tombstone in the nearby cemetery spells his name "RIDDELL". It was in the later part of the '30s (1830's) that Colonel Alexander RIDDLE made his way westward to Missouri and in early life engaged in the lumber business at the corner of Biddle & Broadway in St. Louis, at which time he changed the spelling of the name to RIDDLE. He was commissioned a lieutenant colonel of the St. Louis Legion, Ninety-fifty Regiment, First Brigade, Second Division, Missouri Militia, and he was a well known figure of this city in the middle portion of the nineteenth century, here passing away in 1867. His wife a native of Middletown, Connecticut, was a representative of one of the old families of that state of English lineage. She became the mother of two sons, Truman P. and George T. RIDDLE. She passed away in St. Louis in 1850. George T. RIDDLE was educated in the public schools of St. Louis, passing through consecutive grades to the high school at Fifteenth and Olive. During the later part of the Civil war he served as a clerk in the office of the provost marshal and afterward became connected with the lumber trade in 1865 as a clerk in the employ of James and William PATRICK. On the 8th of February 1870,he became secretary of the Mississippi Planning Mill and continued with that enterprise until 1878, when the company was succeeded by the RIDDLE-REHBEIN Manufacturing Company, of which Mr. RIDDLE is now principal owner. He has thus long been associated with the lumber trade and has won substantial success in this connection. On the 15th of March, 1911, following the death of G. W. GARRELS, president of the Franklin Bank, Mr. RIDDLE was elected to the presidency and remains as the head of that institution. In all business affairs he has displayed unremitting energy and ability and his progress in the business world is the direct outcome of his ability. During the war Mr. RIDDLE was a member of the executive committee of the Red Cross of St. Louis. He belongs to the St. Louis Club, to the Missouri Athletic Association and to the First Presbyterian church -associations that indicate much of the nature of his interests, his recreation and the rules that govern his conduct. His political endorsement is given to the republican party.

    2. Jerrell & Susan Blackmon
    3. Hi Listers, I know that some of you are not getting posts due to problems with your Inboxes. Every time a post is made and it bounces (doesn't go through) for what ever reason, as Listowner, I get an email that tells me who didn't receive it and why. The main reason that I get them is because the Inbox of the person is full. This mainly happens when you have an email account that only allows you to receive a certain amount of messages. If the timing is such that your Inbox is full and a Riddle post is sent to your address, it bounces and I get a message saying that your account is over quota. If your address bounces 3 times, the Rootsweb system automatically unsubscribes you from the list and you get a notice that you have been unsubscribed. Hope this helps. 2. I came across Nancy Riddle, died 4/11/1881, single white female, age 55, died James County, TN (which would mean she was born 1826).  Died of consumption.  Born in Hamilton County, her occupation was housekeeping.  The parents were not known.  Anybody have Nancy Riddle in their line?  Maybe she is sister to my Terry Riddle, I don't know at this point, but I would suspect this to be the case. After the egg hunt on Easter Sunday, the young farm boy decided to play a prank. He went to the chicken coop and replaced every single egg with a brightly colored one. A few minutes later the rooster walked in, saw all the colored eggs, then stormed outside and killed the peacock. HAPPY EASTER!!!
