The Richardson-DNA project administrator does participate here (DeLores). I'll let her respond. Certainly, there are Richardsons who are not related to one another, for the reasons outlined below. But my instinct is that the creation of "Richard's son" names was long enough ago that it doesn't really pose large genealogical problems (except for those of us - not me! - trying to pushing our genealogies back from, say, 1350 to 1250.) To prove that two Richardsons in a county in England in 1350 were related and not both "Richard's sons" is too tall an order for DNA, I think. Of course, this is a problem in that one can waste a lot of time researching Richardsons who are not related but appear potentially to be related. DNA can prevent wasting time on false leads, however! And DNA can prove relationships of genealogical value for the last 400-500 years or so. I encourage all Richardsons to sign up for this - I beg you to do so. There are about 30 people signed up for the study now, and virtually all of them have found a cousin sharing a common ancestor. Except me. So I need more potential cousins to sign up! Please!!! Since we are discussing adding the suffix "-son" onto names, I thought I might add that not all "Richard-sons" are related. When people did begin adopting surnames about 30 generations ago, the just picked one at random. Also, in some cases, their father's name might have been John, or Richard, or David, or Lars (Norway), and they just added on "-son". One way to get around this barrier is to use the DNA testing. It is really great. I don't know if there is one that is really up and running, but for instance, to test the Richardson line, the tester must be a male with the last name Richardson. The test matches markers and other scientifical information (I never have been good at science, so you'll pardon my 'elaborate' terms here) to determine which groups of Richardsons are closely related. As I said, this goes back to about 30 generations before us. Do we have a Richardson DNA spokesperson or moderator that's subscribed to the list?...... Here is a testimonial to the Richardson DNA project. I have found three Richardson relatives and one of another surname. All were unknown to me before the DNA.
