Hi, I was told that in my Richardson ancestors there were some "black Dutch" I had not heard this term before and was wondering if anyone knows exactly what is meant by that? And from what area of Europe would a black Dutch come from? Thanks so much,Eleonore

Hi Eleonore, I have often heard this term too. What some researchers are now finding is that "black Dutch" is often a misnomer for Melungeons, and Native American Ancestry. Many people said that they were of "Dutch" extraction, even though they were of darker complexions, in order to avoid being classified as a slave or relocated during the American Indian Removals. On the Cyndi's List website, she has some great links to Melungeon and "Black Dutch" sites. Many people are offended by this term and you may find a reference to this on some of these sites. I don't know a whole lot about the "Black Dutch", but I will help you with what I can, so don't hesitate to email me.
