    1. RE: [RICHARDSON] My GEDCOM on Roots

    3. Hi Gary, Yes, Rootsweb wrote back and explained what I had to do to make updates and corrections. Since I know my name and password, I go right to my tree. Like a dummy, I did not think to look at the address bar once I was there and then copy and paste the address. Duh, I usually do that all the time but for some reason, brain was not in gear this time. Click on Family Trees. There is a search bar called "Or jump to a specific database" Type j264 in that box, and hit enter. This will bring you to your family tree. I did it this way, and found it right away. As for correcting or editing a database, you need to do that in your own software, and then export the file to a GEDCOM. You probably have already done that, at some time. On Rootsweb, if you submitted directly to them, you will have a user name and password. You'll need that to update the GEDCOM in their system. If you originally sent it somewhere other than Rootsweb, and they are displaying a copy, then you must either update the original, or submit a new GEDCOM to Rootsweb. They're easier to use. Many of the other systems that display your GEDCOMs do not update the existing database, but rather, treat it as an entirely new entry. I did not realize that at first, and I have a database that is entered in Ancestry.com about 20 times. Very annoying when you think you've found multiple entries for an ancestor, and realize it is all the same info. Rootsweb will update the existing one, and display just one, unless you intentionally submit more than one. Might take a few minutes to figure out, but I recommend you stick with Rootsweb, if you're planning to send updated info. What I have is my gedcom posted to Family Trees on Rootsweb. If you click on Family Trees on the home page of Rootsweb and type in Great Families, I am on page 3. The identifier is j264. You can also type in any Richardson name and look for info from j264 as compared to other gedcoms. I don't know how else to identify. This is my first time and that is how I bring it up. For Example, you can type in Bertha RICHARDSON and you will find one from Cornwall, Stormont, Ontario. That is my Bertha. You can look at her pedigree or pull up all the Richardson I have and go through the index until you see a name you are looking for. What I am trying to find out now is, how do I edit this gedcom without having to delete it. I also found out that since I uploaded it to Rootsweb, it is showing in the Trees on Ancestry.com.
