Tom, Were these Seth Sr.'s siblings, or the siblings of Nathan--as I read your sentence, I interpret them to be Seth's? Let me get to my real question (the one I have been asking anyone and everyone discussing NE Richardsons of the late 18th/early 19th century): Does ANYONE have/know anything about a Betsey Richardson, b. July 1783. She married Joseph Jones, possibly in Wardsboro, VT; moved to Chautauqua, NY before early 1820s, probably with the move of the whole John Jones clan. Richardson may NOT have been her maiden name--could have been married to a Richardson before marrying Joseph Jones. So I am looking for Richardson widows as well. I notice that your Nathan was married to an Elizabeth Powell, but she would be too old for my "Betsey." Any and all help appreciated. Bob Robert W. 3. Elaine, Many thanks for the response--even a "I don't have her" is a good response, since I can look elsewhere. And for the suggestions. I pretty well know where she is in Chautauqua Cnty (Buried in Kiantone Cemetery with her Jones in-laws!); what I cannot find about her is where she came from and her family before she married Joseph Jones. Since Joseph came to Chautauqua with his father, John Jones and the rest of the extended Jones family (including spouses), it seems reasonable that she might have come from Wardboro, VT with the rest of the Jones clan. Will just keep looking, Thanks, Bob Strong At 05:36 PM 3/20/2005, you wrote: >Sorry, no. 3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of George E. RICHARDSON of Lowell, Massachusetts which was take at the J. E. Purdy & Co. Studio in Boston, MA. In addition to his name, someone has written "'97", leading me to believe that he graduated from college in 1897. The photograph was recovered with others belonging to Tufts College/University graduates so I'm assuming that he also attended this school I'm hoping to locate someone from the family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. Tom, you'll soon discover that "dcrichardson" is an active participant of this very mailing list. I believe your reference work may be JA Vinton's Richardson Memorial, which details the 3 brothers you mention plus another John (of Medfield) which is my line, and at least one other Richardson. The Vinton works are available in book form as well as CD from numerous sources, including the person you're seeking. Not long ago, we had a discussion in these pages about "plugging" particular sources for documents, etc. Perhaps if you reviewed the archives, you'd find what you're looking for! Gary Richardson

    3. You are all so generous to share your Johns and Seths. I'm really pleased to see this Vinton article as I've come across references to it several times. The various references to Richardsons in Mass, Conn, and Vermont have given me new energy to look at some of the early materials on Ancestry (in the Local and Family Histories archive). I'm left with the sense that I'm looking at early ancestors in one or another of these archives. My challenge remains in how to bridge the gap and know which one. I have "my" John, with wife Eunice, in 1835 in Chautauqua county, New York; no other Richardsons in his immediate neighborhood but one of the Seths and a Crocker Richardson in the region. Are they kin? And where were John and Eunice in 1830? Who knows... The later census reports (when they reached Rock Co, Wisconsin) usually say my John was born in Vermont in 1799, so I'm inclined to look at those earlier links. Occasionally, however, his children reported their father born in New York (perhaps because THEY were born there and did not have his earlier history?). But other than that, zip. So, I keep reading and keep gathering earlier Richardson stuff. Somewhere there will be that little bit that opens the door, yes? Perhaps in something you guys have shared. So, thanks! ----- Original Message ----- From: "David C. 3. Greetings Elaine, John, Gary, et al! ;-) I have been in contact with many Richardson researchers over the years and, as you say, John seems to be the given name of choice for the majority of the Richardson lines on which we have exchanged information. However, I've found several Seth Richardson's in the 1850 and 1860 US Censuses. Through my Richardson contacts I have learned that my g,g grandfather Seth Richardson's father was Nathan Richardson, b. 1760 in Coventry, Tolland Co., CT. His siblings were: John, b. Nov. 16, 1756; William, b. July 22, 1784; and Rhoda, b. Dec. 31, 1785. I do not have any information on their father or mother One of my contacts has an extensive listing of descendants of the above John Richardson Nathan Richardson m. Elizabeth Powell. I have no further information on Nathan and Elizabeth's offspring except that of my g,g grandfather, Seth. Back in September of 2001 I found a website with the title "The History of the Richardson Family in America". It was at http://www.mindspring.com/~dcrichardson/hrfa.htm but I cannot find it anymore (note: I believe that Mindspring is now a part of Earthlink). But I did print out the 17 page report which gives a lot of information about the Richardson surname here in the USA. It is too long for this message (and may be copyrighted so I wouldn't be allowed to copy it anyways) but has some interesting facts which say that the name is so widely spread throughout the US that it would be nearly impossible to connect all of the Richardson lines. The author also says that he (she?) couldn't find any record of the name (here in the US) before 1630. The author mentions that the first encounter of this surname was Ezekiel Richardson who came to these shores in 1630 from Great Britain. His brothers Samuel and Thomas came in 1636. Wish that I could locate 'dcrichardson' to get his permission to make copies of this document so that I could send them to you. If any of you know who 'dcrichardson' is please let me know so that I may make contact. Tom

    3. I believe we've had about 15 John Richardson's in "a row", starting with John of Medfield, and ending with a father and son team, John and John Richardson in Boulder, CO. Along the way, many of the offshoots of the direct line also had John's, so you're right, that may be the single most popular name for Richardson males in the States. We did have a branch of the MA family that moved to VT, by the way. I'm thinking that "my" Seth may have been one of them, as I did not trace his line any further, as yet. Will take your previous letter, and see if I can come up with a connection. Gary Richardson

    3. I just posted a response to Tom Wilde which says about everything I know about the Seth Richardson "connection." Your Seth line apparently originates in Mass, whereas his traces to Vermont. I despair of the numbers of "John Richardson" individuals...but there seem to be a lot of Seths wandering through New England and New York as well. I'm going to keep at this and will certainly share if I find connections. 3. I suspect that your Seth Sr. might be the Seth that I've noticed in Chautauqua County. I've noted his ownership of a farm in the Portland area. A Seth also appears on the Charlotte Township (Chautauqua Co) Census in 1830, along with Josiah Richardson and Crocker Richardson. Similarly, your Seth Jr. may be the one that I've noted later in Wisconsin. I'm interested, too, that your Seth Sr. originates in Vermont. Census reports on my John Richardson sometimes do report birth in Vermont. His children varied in saying that their father was born in Vermont or in New York. I am going to take a look in the Bennington, Manchester Vermont area where your Seth derives. The problem is that I have no idea how or if Seth & Crocker connect with my GG Grandfather John Richardson. I've just noted that they were all contemporaries in Chautauqua County NY and seem to have all moved on to Wisconsin. So I keep making note of the Seths and the Crockers, hoping sometime to see a relationship. Don't we just wish that those early Census reports identified all the names in the household! Thanks for your response. If I turn up any connection, I'll certainly let you know. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Wilde" <wildeman1@cox.net> To: <RICHARDSON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 21, 2005 10:40 AM Subject: [RICHARDSON] Seth Richardson > "Elaine Sunde" <elaine1sunde@cox.net> wrote: > > "Still, I have some sense of an extended family in both New York and > Wisconsin (the names of Seth Richardson and Crocker Richardson reappear, > for example)." > > My great grandfather was Seth F. 1. Ephraim Richardson's wife Mary Cheever
    2. Susan Tait Porcaro
    3. Hello Bit of a mystery here: My ancestor, Ephraim Richardson, married a woman named Mary (Molly) Cheever on 27 june 1776 in Dracut MA. She was supposedly the widow of John Cheever of Dracut. She did have 4-5 kids with John, then more with Ephriam. The Cheever children are all in the Dracut vital records, but no info on John or Mary. What was her maiden name? Where did this John Cheever come from? He must have been fairly young when he died. I think. Does anyone know anything about this Cheever branch? I'm hoping to get Mary's maiden name as she is my ancestor, but there are lots of Cheever descendants out there who'd love to find out about John. Thank you Sue Tait Porcaro Windsor, CT
