I have several of these books that were printed in that time frame usually in limited quantities for the reverenced family. The accuracy is usually as good as the references but since it was intended as a gift to the authors family the informaton was usually reliable. It is quite likely that it was put on a shelf and left there for much of its life so in good condidion. Those I have could have been printed yeaterday... I recently acquired this little book at a garage sale, and wonder if anyone knows anything about it. The book is signed by Hannah Richardson, and the signature and the book look old, but it is in such great shape to be over 150 years old! It tells about the descendants of William and Elizabeth Richardson, from the mid-1600's to 1849, compiled from family manuscripts, apparently all in England. The book was printed by Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in 1850, but it states "Not Published". A Google search of the book shows one reference that speaks of it being printed in the 4th month. Mine doesn't say that. Two other references have it on CD or hard copies, and that's all I see on it. Do I really have an original 1850 unpublished book, or were these books printed in book form? Does anyone know? Thank you!! Donna Spence www.seekyetruth.com/genie.html For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth... From a letter I received from the archivist of the Bank of Montreal dated 8 November 2005: "William Richardson Entered service at Québec in June 1854, was a Teller at Belleville (ON) in 1857. Between 1859 and 1860 held several positions at HO (Montréal) before becoming an Agent in Cobourg, St. Mary’s, Waterloo, Goderich (all branches in the Province of Ontario). In 1869, W. Richardson is Manager of our St. John (NB) branch, and in 1871 he is the Manager of our Chicago branch. He resigned in July 1876 when in office at Chicago. Robert Richardson Entered service in Kingston in 1845; in 1857 he is an Agent in our Port Hope office; in 1860, he is transferred to Perth; in 1865 he is posted in Peterborough, and in 1870 he is transferred in Belleville, where he held the position of Manager at Belleville Branch. All the branches where he worked are in the Province of Ontario." There was also a picture from a bank newsclipping of William Richardson in front of the temporary offices of the Bank shortly after the Chicago Fire in 1871. If anyone connects to either of these Richardsons, please let me know, Happy Thanksgiving, Erica Erica Dakin Voolich President The Somerville Mathematics Fund, an Affiliate of Dollars for Scholars Winner of the 2003-2004 Golden Tassel Service Award We celebrate and encourage mathematics achievement in Somerville MA ! http://www.somervillemathematicsfund.org <A HREF="http://somervillemathematicsfund.org">Somerville Math Fund</A>
This link may not work, unless you remove the "extra" duplicated part that Rootsweb seems to add to it. The proper link starts with http: and ends with background.htm The rest is useless, except that it makes the link appear not to work. Try typing the link manually, if you can't just click on it. This will provide an understanding of the cordwainer trade. http://www.thehcc.org/backgrnd.htm<http://www.thehcc.org/backgrnd.htm>
You'll find that many of the Richardson's who were "shoemakers" were known as cordwainers. While the term is no longer all that active, there are still Cordwainer Guilds in existence. Possibly another source of information about the Richardson ancestry. If I understand it correctly, a cobbler is more of a repairman for shoes, while the cordwainer creates them in the first place. The "Richardson Memorial" by JA Vinton chronicles several brothers of one English Richardson family. Most of them came to Massachusetts ca. 1600-1650, and settled in and around Boston, and in the case of John Richardson, Medfield, Wrentham and Franklin, MA. The book was published in the late 1800's, is currently available in book and CD format. David may not tell you, but he is a good source for the Vinton work on CD. There are other sources, but his is updated, searchable and the basis of much information of the family members you are seeking. The Timothy Richardson, who married twice, is a grand uncle. The brother John, to whom he deeded 11 acres, was my 7th great grandfather. Many of those Richardson's were cordwainers, as well as farmers. Two of the farmhouses (Elisha's bulit 1774, another built 1724) are still standing in Franklin. The farmland is mostly gone. I have not followed the lines other than my direct ancestry any further than what is provided by Vinton. I do have Sceva Richardson, possibly married to Betty Hipon ( ? ) as a son of Timothy and Mehitabel. Gary Allen Richardson ----- Original Message ----- From: David C. They were women of great worth. He was married to his second wife a short time previous to May 5, 1778, when, together with him, she signed a conveyance to his brother John of eleven acres of land in Franklin. She was received into the church in Franklin, June 18, 1780, by letter from the church in Worcester. She died Aug. 30, 1809. He was a cordwainer and also a farmer. He lived on a farm half-way between the farm of his brother Elisha Richardson, and the Franklin meeting-house. He was rather careless, negligent and unthrifty. He seemed at times unscrupulous. He lived to be very old. After both of his wives were dead--his second wife died when he was seventy-eight--and he was in his second childhood, he took a fancy to marry again, and if possible to have for a wife a young woman. Various anecdotes are related of his repeated attempts in this direction and of some ridiculous failures. He joined the church in Franklin by profession in March, 1810, when nearly seventy-nine years old. He died March 21, 1816, aged 85. His children were, By first wife: 7265. Susanna, 6 bap. The Richardson Memorial Previous Next 2733 Zebadiah Richardson Zebadiah Richardson 6 (Zebadiah, 5 Ebenezer, 4 Stephen, 3 Stephen, 2 Samuel 1), brother of the preceding, and son of Rev. Zebadiah 5 and Rebecca (Snow) Richardson; born in Amherst, N.H., Jan. 26, 1769; married, in Chatham, N.H., about 1790, to Phebe Charles, born 1772, daughter of John Charles, of Fryeburg, Me. He removed from Chatham, N.H., to the neighboring town of Fryeburg, Me., in 1802; thence to Canada East in 1803, where he remained nearly four years; thence, late in 1806, he removed to Belmont County, Ohio, on the Ohio River, in the eastern part of that State; next, in 1809, to Hamilton County, near the mouth of the Little Miami River and near Cincinnati; again, in 1812, to Houston, Shelby County, Ohio, on the upper waters of the Great Miami River, where was his home till he died. When he first lived there the country was new, and during the war of 1812 the settlers were much exposed to the incursions of the Indians. While many other people in that region, for security, left their homes and took refuge in forts and block-houses, he remained at home with his numerous family, fortifying his buildings, which were probably constructed of logs, as well as he could, and was never seriously molested. He died at Houston, Dec. 15, 1822, aged 53 years, 10 months, and 19 days. His wife Phebe survived him, and lived on the home farm with her son Snow till 1834. Kathy, Can you tell me in short form about the Thomas Richardson Sr., and Mary Cruse. You see I am thinking that Thomas was my Mary's brother or could be father, but I don't know when Thomas Sr. was born, does the book mention their ages? According to Marys husband Joseph Mullins, Rev War pension they lived in Halifax, Pittsylvania and Henry County, Va before going on to Tenn. My Mary would be born ca 1740's, Joseph was born in 1739 Prince Edward Co, Va. Do you have any deeds of your Richardsons, from land deeds I find Joseph on Bates Branch, do you know where that is? Gay Nix "Kathy S. Schultz" <kathysschultz@earthlink.net> wrote: Hello, Gay. I cannot actually call myself a "Skip Richardson researcher," but the authors of the Richardson appendix in the book The Collie Family of Pittsylvania County, Virginia (This is a part of the longer title.), Betty Cox Collie and Robert King, think that my Pittsylvania Co. ancestor, John Richardson, was the son of Thomas Richardson II and Lucy Thompson (?), grandson of Thomas Richardson, Sr. and Mary Cruse/Crews (?). and greatgrandson of Skip Richardson and Margaret ___? John Richardson married Rebecca Jennings in Pittsylvania Co. in 1814 and moved his family to Gibson Co. in west Tennessee in the 1830's. I also thought that the given name "Skip" was odd for that early a period. Their footnote on p736 says that "His unusual first name is suggestive that one of his maternal ancestors might have been a Skipworth, which is a well-known English surname." All I know about Skip Richardson comes from this book, but I, too, am interested in learning more about him, particularly anything that will help to document that John Richardson's descent from him is correct.
