HI: Sometimes in our searches a negative answer is useful. In this case I will toss one in. The Rich Family Association journal, "Kinfolk" recently completed a series on descendants of a James Rich who moved from Tennessee to Arkansasa to Texas. We followed many of those people down to the present, but there was no one in those lines named Callie Mae Rich nor Rober Alexander Smith. I hope someone else in this list can give you some help. The RFA includes members from many different Rick ancestors, so we would be interested in your family, too. ML in VT, Prod. Editor of "Kinfolk"
Have been unable to find any information on parents or siblings my great grandfather James Rich apparently born ca 1823 in North Carolina. Below is what little information I have. Would appreciate any assistance or suggestions: "Searching for information my G grandparents James RICH and Lucretia (RICHARDSON) RICH for whom marriage license was issued in Gibson County TN on 5 Jan l852. Indications are they had children born about a follows: Julius 1852, James 1855, Frances 1857, Margaret 1860,Daniel Newton 1862, Caldonia 1864, Mary Ann 1867 and Nancy 1869. James and Lucretia Rich with four oldest children shown in 1860 census in 3rd District of Gibson County TN with Gibson Wells post office, however this is last record that can be found of James and Lucretia Rich as a couple. 1869 Tax Book for District 5, Gibson County, lists James Rich, however, this is last record we can find on either of this couple. 1880 TN census shows James Rich in household L. E. McLemore in Madison County, Daniel Rich in household Saluda Mobley in Crockett County, Caldonia in household of Joseph Richardson in Gibson County, and Mary and Nancy in household of William Crosby in Gibson County. Perhaps something happened to parents as children apparently placed with brothers and sisters of their mother. James RICH reported born in North Carolina ca 1823 and Lucretia RICHARD SON in Tennessee ca 1831. Have been unable to determine what happened to parents but have heard reports of yellow fever epidemic in this area. Unable to find any record of land ownership, wills executed, adoption or guardinship, church records, death records, or tombstones. Following records of marriages in Crockett County Tennessee found: M. A. Rich to Thomas B, Wright, 28 January 1883, Bondsman J. H. Morgan. M. A. Rich to Frank Gilbert (alias Tredo), 23 May 1885, Bondman T.J. Richardson. Nancy Rich to John C. Lee, 11 February 1887, Bondsman J. W. Murchison. (Could these be Margaret and Nancy of the children listed above). James A. Rich (the son) married Martha Johnson 10 August 1886 in Madison County, TN., were listed in 1900 Crockett County TN census and then went to Texas and died in Lamar County Texas in 1913." J. A.
Dear Rich list members: The Rich list has grown by another 31 members since I last updated you in April. There are now 252 of us willing to share information on our RICH ancestry. As I mentioned last time, I hate to see queries go unanswered but, rest assured, there are many of us who look at each one and dig into our archives to try to find an answer -- many times to no avail. I don't always respond if I don't find an answer, but I always look! I hope everyone takes the time to search his or her database and archives to help answer queries. That's how it's all supposed to work. And remember to post your answers to the list, not just via personal e-mail -- especially if you think the answer may benefit others. And always remember to look for proof, not just someone else's data. It could be wrong! Please remember too that the Rich Family Association in Wellfleet, Massachusetts (USA) remains the best way to really begin your search. They are the repository of a wealth of information, especially on New England Riches. The summer '99 issue of Kinfolk arrived a few weeks ago with info on the RFA reunion coming up in September. Rootsweb has conveniently grouped all the resources for each surname together. The Rich info is at: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/r/i/RICH/ Every now and then a "roll call" of subscribers is helpful, as "cousins" tend to discover each other. Please feel free to check in and list your line of descent from your immigrant ancestor, and let everyone else know of your unsolved mysteries. Here's mine: Richard Rich of Eastham on Cape Cod, Thomas, John, James, Belden R., Noah, Noah, Edward Belden, Charles Loase, Charles Edward, Craig Robert. If you have Mayflower ancestors (as many Riches do) please feel free to join my other list, MAYFLOWER-L by sending a one word message "subscribe" to: mayfower-l-request@rootsweb.com Best of luck to all of you as you explore your Rich heritage! -- Craig Robert Rich crich@macatawa.org Listowner: MAYFLOWER-L and RICH-L mailing lists

Hi, Just returned from vacation so you may have this information already. The "book" by Evelyn Rich is really a series of four articles she wrote for the New England Historical and Genealogical Register. It is available in most libraries that have any information on genealogy at all. I think it is Summer, Fall, 1929 and Winter, Spring of 1930. You can copy it at the library. To get a reprint, go to Higginson Book Co. at www.higginsonbooks.com Go to the Surname Rich and the title is there. You can fax, mail or phone in an order (can't order over the internet). Took about six weeks to get my copy from them. They are good to do business with. THE FINAL INSTALLMENT from the "Library of Cape Cod History & Genealogy" by Josiah Paine 1916: John Rich, the younger brother, and son of Mr. Richard Rich, married Mary Treat, daughter of Rev.Samuel Treat, December 10, 1700. She died January 4, 1722-23. He, the same year, married Mrs. Hope Sears, widow of Richard Sears of Chatham. He settled in that part of Eastham now Wellfleet, where he died of the smallpox in 1747, which was prevelent there that year. Mr. Rich was the deacon of the church and a prominent man. His daughter Hope, by his second wife, born May 7, 1725, was the wife of Col. Elisha Doane, a well known citizen of Wellfleet, who amassed wealth in the whale fishery, and was thought to have been the richest man of his time in Massachusetts. Deacon Rich had 8 children by his first wife Mary. His son John, born 1706, married Thankful Sears, daughter of Richard and Hope Sears in 1727. Thomas Rich, the third son of Mr. Richard Rich, married Mercy, daughter of Samuel Knowles, Esq. of Eastham, July 23, 1702 and settled in that part of town now Orleans, near the late John Doane's house. He had 9 children. His sons were Thomas, James, Joseph, and Samuel. He died in the middle of the last century. He had land granted by the town, in 1702, on the south side of the way, near the cedar swamp and pond. Sarah Rich, daughter of Mr. Richard Rich, married February 25, 1702-3, Isaac Baker of Eastham and settled at Billingsgate, now Wellfleet. They had 6 children, viz: Simeon, Samuel, Isaac, Joseph, Richard and Sarah. *****Unfortunately, that is all there is to this article. Lydia and Samuel are not mentioned******
Does anyone have any information on Albert G. Rich, b abt 1832 in Georgia? He was in Texas in 1855. He purchased land in DeSoto Parish Louisiana in 1858. Wife's name was Mary Angeline. Would appreciate anything anyone may have. Toni
I recently purchased a 2 volume set of a publication called:" Library of Cape Cod History & Genealogy" Founder's Day Edition August 26, 1916 of the early settlers of Eastham, Mass. written by Josiah Paine of Harwich. (#32 & 33) Included is the excerpt about Richard Rich. Take it for what it is worth...I have copied it verbatim! Due to the length of this and to keep your interest up I will be sending this in two installments. Hope you enjoy it! Richard Rich, the ancestor of the Rich family of the Cape, came to Eastham from Dover, New Hampshire. He was a mariner, say the records, and admitted a townsman August 23, 1681, it being the first notice of him upon the record of Eastham. He appears to have been a man of standing, and entitled to the prefix of "Mister". The particular spot he selected for his house lot, the writer is not informed. He evidently was married before his settlement here. His wife was Sarah Roberts, it is said by his descendants. But very little is said of him in the records. He had the description of his cattle marks entered in the records April 12, 1686. He is mentioned as buying rights to undivided land known as "Smith's Purchase". The right of William Mayo he purchased June 3, 1686, and the right of Stephen Atwood he purchased June 29 of the same year. The tract known as "Smith's Purchase" and sometimes called the "Ten Pound Purchase", estimated to contain 1,000 acres, was bought of John Sipson, an Indian of Potonumecot, by Samuel Smith in behalf of the town proprietors in 1684. It extended northerly nearly across the present town of Orleans, from an east and west line between Kescayogansett and Potonumecot Rivers. Mr. Rich died early in the autumn of 1692, evidently not a very aged man. An inventory of his effects was taken by John Doane, Isaac Pepper and Richard Rich on October 5, 1692. Letters to administer upon his estate were granted to Isaac Pepper and Richard Rich, his eldest son, October 19 of the same year. A settlement was effected April 8, 1697. The children mentioned in the settlement as surviving are Richard, the eldest son, John, Sarah, Thomas, Samuel and Lydia. At this date, none of the daughters had been married. Richard Rich, the son, born in 1674, went to Truro and settled. He died May 3, 1743 in the 69th year of his age. His wife Anna died May 11, 1754, aged 74. They had nine children. THE LAST INSTALLMENT OF THIS DOCUMENT WILL BE TOMORROW!!!

Finally...does anyone know where I might get a copy of the book "Richard Rich of Eastham on Cape Cod and Some of His Descendants" by Evelyn Rich of Boston, Mass.? Thanks! JEKFK@aol.com

Hi Cousins, I trying to find out any info on this line of Riches. It is possible that William Martin Rich came to Maine from England and moved south to NC and then to Georgia. It has been passed down in our line that our Riches came from England to Maine through North Carolina to Georgia however I have not been able to prove any of that and actually I was searching up another line of Riches for answers that has not yet yielded any results. A second cousin sent me this info that was composed by a Great Great Uncles Family: William Martin Rich b 12 may 1782 Phillack, Cornwall, England d Elbert, GA Amy Folfinghome b 1786 Phillack, Cornwall, England John Rich b 4 May 1751 Catharine Trevaskis b 1753 John Rich b abt 23 Feb 1719 Elizabeth Jeffrey b 1721 John Rich b abt 1690 d 23 April 1757 m abt 1718 Mariann Major John Rich b abt 1608 d 1679 Susanna Venn b abt 1613 Thanks for your help William J. Missing Rich Brothers The widow of Marshall Howell Rich(son of Jacob Rich of Orange county NC & Franklin county TN), Louisa Jane was absent from the MS census of 1880. Also two sons were not listed. This puzzled us until a family member recently located her in Columbia county AR with two sons John Rich(b. Oct 15, 1864) and Jacob Rich(lllrd b. Dec 1, 1859). Louisa Jane Rich returned to north MS where she is buried(died Apr 26, 1894). Benjamin Brooks Rich(born 18 Mar 1854) is also missing. The sons John and Jacob possibly went to Texas. George W. Rich(b. Oct 10, 1873-another brother) is known to have moved to Columbia county AR. Just recently I've learned from the Jim Palmer family of TX that John located in Louisville, KY and became a doctor. This is logical because he had cousins in Illinois who were doctors and bankers(Union county). Jim's hard riuve crashed and he has not been able to send me more info yet. Two other brothers Henry C. Rich(b. Oct 11, 1867- twin of Hampton W.) and Joseph P.Rich(b. Sep 8, 1861) are buried in Nacogdoches, Texas. Still another brother, William Thomas Rich(b. Feb 14, 1866) had one son who died in Brookhaven, MS(name William-born 1886). William Thomas Rich is believed to have raised a family near Itta Bena MS. No information about the whereabouts of Robert A. Rich(b. Jan 28, 1863) and Samuel Rich(b. Jul 24, 1870) and Jacob Rich(born 1 dec 1859 MS-twin died) has been recovered. One of these is believed to have changed his first name. Also missing is their half sister named Rachel Rich. She was born a McAninch but later changed her name to Rich. She was last found in Chickasaw county MS in 1870. Any leads appreciated. Bobby Rich brich@panola.com
