    3. I would like information on Chauncey Rich b ca 1789 d ca 1830 probably Geauga Co OH; m Editha Hayden (she m2 Ira Tolliver/Dolliver 1 Jan 1835?) Chauncey and Editha's marriage recorded at the Haddam Neck Congregational Church, East Hampton, Connecticut 2 May 1809. Chauncey and Editha apparently came to Geauga/Lake County OH 1820-1830, since there was an undeliverable letter for Chauncey in 1830. Based on a deed from Cornelius Rich to Chancy Rich of Chatam/EastHaddam CT, I believe that Chancy is the son of Cornelius Jr. I would also appreciate any further confirmation of this. The deed did not specifically name Chancy as his son, but Chancy was to take care of Cornelius and Keziah for the balance of their lives. Cornelius RICH Born: ca 1748 Eastham, Massachusetts, son of Cornelius Rich Sr and Rhoda Fish; Grandson of Thomas Rich and Mercy Knowles; Great-grandson of Richard Rich and Sarah Roberts of Wellfleet MA Died: 30 Dec 1823 Chatham, Middlesex Co, Connecticut Married: ca 1768 Keziah Goff baptized 7 Dec 1746, d. 26 Feb 1826, daughter of Nathaniel Goff and Jerusha Atwill On Mon, 23 Aug 1999 07:34:39, -0500 M_Lighthall@prodigy.com (MS MARY G LIGHTHALL) writes: >Yes I am sure this is more about the message I lost. thanks. 3. I believe I have found my ancestor George W Brown age 21 living in Boston with Sylvanus RICH age 38 on the 1850 Federal Census. I also have that George was b 1829 Wellfleet MA son of James Brown. (From his wife's Family History) Their marriage certificate list only his father's name. There is a Capt James Brown who died 8 Aug 1831 & is buried in Duck Creek Cemetery Wellfleet. An infant Martha daughter of James & Lucy Brown is buried next to him. Cemetery records say Martha died 21 Nov 1828. LDS records show Lucy Rich b 1790 m James Brown Wellfleet 1811, except that their son George died in 1828 & their daughter Martha died Nov 1829. Are the LDS records for Martha's death incorrect? Could Lucy & James have had another son George who was b1829? Is George related to Sylvanus Rich? As you can see I am very confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! TIA Cathy Brewer

    2. I am hoping that this is the CT information you were referring to! I copied my original message and would appreciate any help with discovering Horace's true family line. I have since found in CT State Library a copy of the family Bible of Cornelius3.. There are lots of names but Horace is NOT one of them. I found that Horace was born in 1807, married Saphena Spencer in 1829, and died in Middle Haddam in 1854. He had a son Henry S. who married Henrietta Bailey. My original message was: I would like some help with the following information from the Evelyn Rich writings in Vol. 83 NEHGS Register: On pg. 274 about Cornelius b. circa 1720 (m. Rhoda Fish) she states that "no record of his estate is known" and "there is no known record of his family except for a careful search made by HW Brainard of Hartford, CT". Does anyone know where or if he documented his findings of the 7 sons of this Cornelius and where I might locate a copy of it? On pgs 57-58 of Cornelius 3 she writes that the child Horace b. 1818 m. Sophronia Spencer(Saphena in Haddam records) was "probably a member of this family". Does anyone know if this has ever been proven and/or where I might find this? I have located in the Haddam Records and Barbour Records the following information to fill in some blanks on pg. 58: Wealthy B Rich age 27 b. Middle Haddam, res. East Haddam m. Charles S (also listed as Charles T) Spencer b. East Haddam, age 24, blacksmith on June 30, 1850 in Moodus, CT by Rev. Jacob Gardner Joseph O Rich of Chatham m. Harriet Clark of Haddam February 26, 1838 by Rev. David D Field Thanks in advance! K KELLY (JEKFK@aol.com)

    3. Sandra, I emailed you earlier about the possibility of a John Rich and a Truro and Mount Desert Island connection. What I didn't remember while writing from work is exactly what my Dad and Grandfather had concluded. "My" John Rich ended up on Isle au Haut, ME around 1803 (Lathrop Lewis' map, Survey of 1803, shows him owning lot #2). Julia Rich Hogan, in her "The American Beginnings of the Rich Family," Vol. IV, could not positively conclude that my Isle au Haut John and the two Johns at Mt. Desert were either one and the same or related. However, her strong suspicion was that my John was one or the other of the Mt. Desert Johns. My grandfather and father did further research on our line of Riches. Dad's conclusion, from his "The Rich Family of Isle au Haut, Maine" (and yes, Warren Rich, the Rich Family Association genealogist, has a copy of Dad's "book."): "As I indicated earlier, Town records are basically non-existent. The only way we can proceed further back in history from JOHN RICH is to rely on census information and known ages and death dates. By this process we conclude that JOHN RICH was born in 1786. John, we are sure, was born in 1786 from the 1850 Census records taken of Dee Island, Maine listing his age as 64 years. Isle au Haut at the time was a part of Deer Island. Records show only _one_ JOHN RICH in Maine who was born in 1786. This eliminated the Mount Desert RICHES as JOHN was too young to be JOHN RICH Sr. and too old to be JOHN RICH JR. of that town. "The 1786 date is also important in that there was a JOHN RICH born that year of NEHMIAH and MARGARET LATHLY LEWIS RICH. This same NEHEMIAH and MARGARET RICH were prominent citizens of Winterport, Maine. The conclusion is that our JOHN has to be ths sone of NEHEMIAH and MARGARET RICH. My research of information available does not show any possible connection with any other line of RICHES. "We don't know exactly when NEHEMIAH and MARGARET RICH came to Winterport, Maine from Cape Cod. Land records do show that NEHEMIAH RICH of Wellfleet, Mass. bought 74 acres of land in Frankfort, Hancock County, Maine 29 August 1795, the first of many land transactions involving NEHEMIAH in Maine. "Based on the above, again the conclusion is that JOHN RICH, son of NEHEMIAH Rich was born in Massachusetts, most likely at Wellfleet, Eastham or Truro in 1786; and is one and the same as the JOHN RICH who is in Isle au Haut, Maine before 1810." That doesn't exactly answer your question, but it does establish the link between Riches in Isle au Haut, Maine to the Cape Cod Riches. NEHEMIAH being son of ROBERT RICH of Eastham, who is son of JOHN RICH of Eastham, who was son of RICHARD RICH of Dover, NH and Eastham, MA. Being in such close proximity, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Isle au Haut Riches and the Mount Desert Riches have some kind of link. And in case anyone is curious, the rest of my line goes from John Rich of Isle au Haut... Stillman Rich of Isle au Haut... Edwin Rich of Isle au Haut... Floyd Rich of Isle au Haut and Jackson, Michigan... Norman Rich of Jackson, Michigan who now resides in Knoxville, Tennessee... to me. Best wishes, John John C. Rich Knoxville, TN gorf@usit.net

They had five children: Celinda, Averill, Elnathan Adnirom, Luman & Matty. All the children were born in Hyde Park, VT. Thanks, David

    2. If you will check the NEHGS you will find a volume with The Rich Family of Eastern Connecticut by Edwin A. Hill. I am sorry that I can not tell you the volume no. as my copy is old and has faded but it starts on page 222 and maybe someone else knows the volume. It has some information on the children of Cornelius in it which may help you. I do not know if this is where Evelyn Rich got her information but I do not think so as I believe the volume that this is in is after vol. 83. Good luck on your search. Marian Rich Thorne, MI State Representative for RFA.

    3. This weekend at the Sawtelle Research Center in Bar Harbor my husband found some interesting info on John Rich from the Sawtelle papers. According to Sawtelle, John Rich born July 25, 1741 and at 7 years of age moved from Truro, Mass to Marblehead, Mass to Bass Harbor, Mount Desert Island, Maine. He married Emma Cross(sometimes spelled LaCroix). She was born Sept.18, 1741 and died September 17, 1803. John Rich died October 15, 1811. Their children: John m. Susie Tucker William m. P.Morrill Jonathan m. Mary Gott Elias Phebe m. John Stanley Emma Polly Sally Nancy m. Joseph Lancaster Is this John Rich descended from the Richard Rich clan of Cape Cod? I haven't been able to find any connection yet. This is the first I've seen of this Truro to Mount Desert connection. Does anyone else have any more information on this connection? Thanks! 2. The CT State library has seven books written by Homer Worthington Brainard (1864-1947). These are genealogies of the Nutting, Gilbert, Townsend, Isham and Scovill families. I didn't get a chance to find out which if any of these contain the information on Cornelius Rich. It is also possible that he published papers in the NEHGS Register. If Evelyn Rich didn't give a specific reference it might have been published after her papers. I didn't spend much time on it since my only CT connection is the Beaches. The Scovill family sounds interesting since I live on Scoville Road but there is still too much other stuff to look for right now. Dick Rich - VP Rich Family Association (Avon, CT)
