The following may sound somewhat confusing, but I am looking for information on a Sidney Rich, born in Virginia 1787 or 1788, later lived in Kentucky and eventually settled in Hamilton County, Illinois. For several years, our family has been trying to find more information on Warren Rich Sr., who was believed to be my GGGGgrandfather. However, recently I came across the 1850 census of Hamilton County, Illinois, which noted that a Sidney Rich, male, age 62, and born in Virginia, lived with Warner Rich and his family in Hamilton County (our records show that his name is Warren, not Warner, though). The Warner/Warren noted in the census is the brother of my GGGgrandfather, Taylor Rich, who also lived in Hamilton County at that time. The age and birthplace of Sidney matches that which we had for Warren Sr. Does any of this make sense to anyone out there? Does anyone have information on a Sidney Rich born in Virginia in the late 1780s? His children include Patsy, Elizabeth, Susan, Lucinda, Louisa, Taylor, Washington, Jeremiah, and Warren. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve Rich Charleston, Illinois csswr@eiu.edu

I am still looking at my solid brick wall. My story. William (Willie) COOK, Born: Topton, NC. Cherokee Co. around 1895. This man was my grandfather Memphis Ray. I know his mother was Catherine Elizabeth Rogers Cook. Born around 1860 in NC. Question about who she married. William Henry Cook or Henry Cook. He worked for the Railroad. They had two children. One son (My grandfather) William Cook, One daughter Dora Bell Cook Ray. Catherine Elizabeth Rogers mother was Eliza (Lizzie) Riche. She married a ? Rogers. Eliza (Lizzie) Jane Riche Rogers was part Cherokee and Dutch. Some of her family was from Holland. They had a lot of children but this is all the names I have. My great grandmother Catherine Elizabeth was their first child born ca 1860 . Their other children were Dempsy Rogers, Elvira Rogers, Ronnie Rogers, Eligar (Liga) Rogers, Amanda Rogers Fox Young. All from the East, TN, NC area. My grandfather William Cook was in the TN Nation Guard in 1916 in Polk Co. TN and served in the TX border uprising 1916-1917. He may have left a wife and two children. He and his mother and sister relocated to WV with the son taking a new identity of William Memphis Ray. This was around 1918 or 1919 because in 1920 he married my grandmother in WV with his new name. That is about all the information on my family that I have. I would love to find his family. If you had information it would be deeply appreciated by me as you can see my brick wall is solid. Thank you, Jerry Nan JRNan1@aol.com The family relocated to WV with the son taking a new identity of William Memphis Ray. I did not find out until after my grandfather was dead that he had another name of Cook. This was his given name. I know he was in TN in 1916 with his family so I am guessing about a lot.
Dick, You are so right. None of us can go forward without cashing in on someone's work and all of us need to be a "someone." I remember how much fun it was when I was working on my and my husband's families, several years ago. I got to know people across our land and we exchanged many envelopes of information and questions as we researched our families. To this day, I can remember the names of several top notch researchers who shared with me, as a beginner, and I was amazed that they would do so. Consequently, I vowed to share all my findings with any contributing researcher and was rarely disappointed in any of them. Were we a more sharing people then? Were we less hurried? I don't think so. We certainly lived in a pre-instant world but that is about the only difference I can see. Your letter has certainly given me pause for thought. Thank you for writing it. I am looking for a William George Rich that was married to Mamie Prochno. They lived in Indiana. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Karen
Dear Rich list members: My great grandfather, Edward Belden Rich was given his middle name in honor of his great Grandfather, Belden R. Rich, who was born in Middletown (Chatham), Connecticut, 13 Feb 1775 and died 17 Feb 1838 in Junius Township, Seneca County, New York. Belden must have been given his name to honor a relative, since it is a most unusual first name. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with any BELDENs in their line to find out where this name came from. Also, I am always interested in comparing info with any other Riches who went "west" (to Michigan) in the mid 1800s. And thanks to Frank Rich Johnson for "waking up" the list. Searching for information my G grandparents James RICH and Lucretia (RICHARDSON) RICH for whom marriage license was issued in Gibson County TN on 5 Jan l852. Indications are they had children born about a follows: Julius 1852, James 1855, Frances 1857, Margaret 1860,Daniel Newton 1862, Caldonia 1864, Mary Ann 1867 and Nancy 1869. James and Lucretia Rich with four oldest children shown in 1860 census in 3rd District of Gibson County TN with Gibson Wells post office, however this is last record that can be found of James and Lucretia Rich as a couple. 1869 Tax Book for District 5, Gibson County, lists James Rich, however, this is last record we can find on either of this couple. 1880 TN census shows James Rich in household L. E. McLemore in Madison County, Daniel Rich in household Saluda Mobley in Crockett County, Caldonia in household of Joseph Richardson in Gibson County, and Mary and Nancy in household of William Crosby in Gibson County. Perhaps something happened to parents as children apparently placed with brothers and sisters of their mother. James RICH reported born in North Carolina ca 1823 and Lucretia RICHARD SON in Tennessee ca 1831. Have been unable to determine what happened to parents but have heard reports of yellow fever epidemic in this area. Unable to find any record of land ownership, wills executed, adoption or guardinship, church records, death records, or tombstones. Following records of marriages in Crockett County Tennessee found: M. A. Rich to Thomas B, Wright, 28 January 1883, Bondsman J. H. Morgan. M. A. Rich to Frank Gilbert (alias Tredo), 23 May 1885, Bondman T.J. Richardson. Nancy Rich to John C. Lee, 11 February 1887, Bondsman J. W. Murchison. (Could these be Margaret and Nancy of the children listed above). James A. Rich (the son) married Martha Johnson 10 August 1886 in Madison County, TN., were listed in 1900 Crockett County TN census and then went to Texas and died in Lamar County Texas in 1913. J. A.
Newton A. Rich/Riche, b abt 1827 Tenn, was in Calhoun Co., Ala in 1847. He is listed in the 1860 Calhoun Co. census with his children William (Jack), Albert, Thomas, James, and an unnamed male infant. Have been looking for many years for Newton's parents. Would appreciate any information anyone may have. Toni Rich Peters
Joseph Rich married Elizabeth Grubb Beeson abt. 1714 and had three sons, Joseph, Peter, John. Elizabeth was the widow of Edward Beeson. Joseph Sr. born abt 1692. They were in Chester Co., Pa. Has anyone found the father of Joseph? Henry Rich
Hi Rich-L I am a direct descendent of Charles Coulson RICH of the Mormon Religion Rich's. The line goes Adelbert Coulson RICH Sr. => Adelbert Coulson RICH Jr. => Barbara Jean RICH => Pamela N. HOPKINS (my mother). There is a lot written about Charles Coulson RICH, but I have not been able to find any information beyond his father Joseph RICH. Has anyone out there researched farther back? I am also totally stumped by Adelbert Coulson RICH Jr.'s wife Mary Lovett SYMES. I know her father and mothers names were James SYMES & Eva May SMITH (thanks to a very kind person out there) and I know that she had a sister named Audrie, but that's all I know. Also, Adelbert Coulson RICH Jr. worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad and there is a story my mother tells of Adelbert having to change his last name to RITCHIE because his Uncle or Cousin worked for the same railroad and in those day's they didn't hire any family members. Adelbert Coulson RICH Jr. moved to California in the 1920's. I don't think that he had much contact with his family after that and I know that my grandmother was not raised Mormon, so there could possibly have been some kind of family rife. I have no relative's or cousins from Adelbert C. Rich Jr., other than my immediate family, so am looking to the Internet and the kind people who are interested in genealogy for help. I would greatly appreciate any help, Sandy Researching family names, so far - SEYMOUR (Vallejo CA & San Francisco CA) WISE (Vallejo CA & San Francisco CA) KELLY (Vallejo CA & San Francisco CA) TAYLOR(?) What is this person's problem????????????
Joyce, I can't help you with the parents although he was possibly the grandson of Warren Rich Sr. and Unknown, who moved their family to McLeansboro, Hamilton Co., Ill., by the early 1830s. I am a descendant of Warren Sr. and my family eventually moved to Benton. The following is what I do have on a Joel Rich from the Illinois State Archives (Secretary of State's Office). This gentlemen died in the service in 1865 so he is obviously not the one you're looking for although there is probably some family connection. The following is information is from the "Muster and Descriptive Rolls" of the 155th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers, Company C: Joel Rich; corporal; age 24; 5' 8 1/2" tall; dark hair; dark eyes; dark complexion; farmer; native of Hamilton Co. Ill.; joined Feb. 9, 1865, in Ashley, Ill.; joined for a period of one year; signed in by T. Shirley; mustered into service Feb. 19, 1865, at Camp Butler by Capt. Hall; resident of McLeansboro, Hamilton Co., Ill.; died of disease March 27, 1865, in Nashville, Tenn. Hope this is helpful in some way.
