Ruth: I don't have any of your Riches in my database. Do I understand correctly that this is the Quaker line? Perhaps someone else on the list can help you with some answers, but it would be helpful if you would ask specific questions. I hope you find what you are looking for. And remember to post everything to the list. Thanks! Craig Rich Listowner, Rich-L "Ruth R. Hello again! The RICH-L list is about two and a half years old now and we've seen a "leveling off" of our growth. Every now and then I like to jump in and, if not "stir things up", at least say hello and welcome the new members and encourage those who have been sitting by idly to contribute. I started this list in the fall of 1997 and for a few weeks I was the only member. (Boy, did it get boring!) Tonight, I went back and tracked our growth and it looks like this: 7 FEB 1998 -- 100 members 14 MAR 1999 -- 204 members 13 JAN 2000 -- 262 members As you can see we've leveled off a bit. We currently have 272 Rich researchers on the list, representing most areas of the US and other points on the globe. Many of us (like me) descend from Richard Rich of Eastham on Cape Cod, while many others have southern Rich roots. I notice several of you are also checking out GenForum's Rich list at: http://genforum.genealogy.com/rich/ And several of you are listing your Rich surname and others at Rootsweb's Surname List Finder at: http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rslsql.cgi Or the Rootsweb resource page for the RICH surname at: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/r/i/RICH/ And many of us are members of the Rich Family Association at P. O. Box 142, Wellfleet, MA 02667. If you're not a member, you should really consider it. It's only $20 for new members, then $15 annually. The RFA newsletter "Kinfolk" is worth the price of membership, not to mention the contacts, the information and the annual reunion. As a life member, I am especially proud that the RFA allowed me to design and maintain their official web page at: http://www.richfamilyassociation.org Watch the RFA web page in the future. Decisions are being made regarding content and links. Hopefully, some day it will be the quintessential resource for RFA members throughout the world. All of this amounts to a lot of work and effort going into the Rich line which will, undoubtedly, lead to new discoveries. Your contributions to this mailing list are a very important part of this camaraderie. Please remember to continue to post your inquiries and answer each other's questions ON THE LIST, if appropriate, rather than by personal e-mail so all of us can share in the information. Also, if you've posted your Gedcom or put your ahnentafel (family tree) on a web page, please let us know so we can take a look at it. You may hold the missing link for someone! Hi, According to a record I have of the children of Samuel Rich, Vol. 9 of the Rich Family History by Julia Rich Hogan: page 56 indicates that a John Lewis Rich was born in Oxford, Me. on Feb. 16, 1838, the son of John Stevens Rich and Sarah H. (or A.) _____surname unknown____. Is this the right John Lewis? His father moved after 1846 but before 1860 (the presumed date is sbout 1848) to Wisconsin. The 1860 census shows him at age 60 residing in the Town of Greenfield, County of Monroe, Wisconsin. John Lewis was the 7th of 10 children. Listed in the Wisconsin census of 1860 at age 21, but listed as Lewis Rich. The ancestry of John Lewis is John Lewis-7, John Stevens-6, Samuel-5, Ezekiel-4, Lemuel-3, Samuel-2, Richard-1 If this is the correct John Lewis, let me know. I have additional material on Richard, Samuel, Lemuel...maybe I can help you find out more. I am trying to find somei nformation about my wife's genealogy. The only information I have is from her own memory and suppositions from Asbury Cemetery in South East Smith County Texas. My wife's father is buried there. He was: Clifford Onts Ritch. He was born 5 Sep 1911 in Selman, Texas and died 4 Apr 1976 in Terrell, Texas. His parents were John William Ritch and Alice Venora Henson. I took their birth and death dates from their tombstones. Also buried in the same cemetery are James R. Ritch b. 17 mar 1827, d. 9 Feb 1903 and Gimmminy G. Brown (wife of JR Ritch) b. 28 Mar 1828, d. 17 Feb 1924. These could be the parents of John William Ritch. Also buried there: John D. Henson b. 10 Mar 1844 d. 16 May 1932 and Mary A. Henson b. 9 Jan 1844, d. 14 Jun 1918. These could be the parents of Alice Venora Henson. Anyone have any other information about these Ritch family members? I have not found any of them in the 1900, 1910, or 1920 Texas Census data. Births and deaths prove they were there. Modified Register for John William RITCH 03 May 2000 First Generation 1. John William RITCH was born 3 Aug 1859. He died 18 Sep 1927 and was buried in Asbury Cemetery, Smith County, Texas. She died 8 Jul 1946 and was buried in Asbury Cemetery, Smith County, Texas. They had the following children: 2 M i. James Albert RITCH was buried in Asbury Cemetery, Smith County, Texas. As his tombstone has no dates, this child may be the son of J. W. and his first wife, Ida Newton Ritch. 3 M ii. Harley RITCH was born 1 Oct 1908. He died 1 Aug 1910 and was buried in Asbury Cemetery, Smith County, Texas. + 4 F iii. Velma RITCH. + 5 M iv. Clifford Onts RITCH was born 5 Sep 1911 and died 4 Apr 1976. 6 M v. Transcribed tombstone markers for Asbury Cemetery lists grave as, "Infant Sons of J.W. & Alice Ritch 1913-1914." Question - Is this grave twin sons who lived and died the same? Have the copy of will posted in Orange Co., NC, 1809 by Samuel Rich. Lists wife Rachel and 10 children; females are Jane, Vaughty, Phebe, Tamer and Sarah. Males are John, Samuel, Joseph, Jacob and Thomas. Attempting to tie these Rich's into Rich/Riche's, some in Ms. Many Riche's buried in Pleasant Ridge Cemetary near Meridian, Ms. Info from Ms letter (old and dated) has Samuel Washington Rich from NC moved to Ms and died 09/18/1855 (death location unknown); one of five males. One went to Ala and one to Tx but unknown where others moved or if stayed in NC. Have much detail on family from Samuel Washington Rich's son, John W. Riche on down through mid-'50's. Seems as if he should have had more than one child but this is all I have. (See name change from Rich to Riche? Confusing me, big time!) Martha Knight Busby was either the wife of Samuel or the wife of his son, John R. If info from John W. Rich is needed, just let me know. Any encouragement out there? Tell me I have a tie between MS and NC. Please? Thanks. Vicky R. Condra vcondra@gte.net
