The following message has detailed data about the Ritch line (David, Hardy Cry, William, J. Jefferson, Edward, Emanuel, Anna, Hannah, and Mary) and related families (Helms, Height, Crye, Dunning, Blunt, Tinsley) of Mecklenburg Co NC and Muscogee Co GA. On 6 Dec 1847, David RITCH signed his Will in Muscogee Co GA. He is my gg grandfather. His wife's identity and the place and date of his birth are unknown to me. Based on both the 1850 Census and circumstantial evidence, I assume that some, if not all, of his children were born in what was then known as Mecklenburg Co NC. However, I have not proven a definite link between any specific NC Ritches and my David RITCH who died in Muscogee Co GA. My g grandfather, Emanuel RITCH, was 33 when his father signed his Will and was likely the youngest of David RITCH'S sons. According to his Will, David RITCH'S sons were: William, J Jefferson, Edward, Hardy Cry, and Emanuel. Daughters were: Mary, Anna HELMS, and Hannah HEIGHT. Emanuel and David CRY were the Executors. All children of David RITCH that I have found so far that are enumerated in the 1850 GA Census were born in NC. In 1851, Emanuel Ritch was named the Executor of Timothy DUNNING'S Will and also named as guardian of Susan F. DUNNING, Timothy's youngest daughter. She is surely the Francis DUNNING who was four in the 1850 Census household of Timothy DUNNING. Timothy DUNNING was born about 1798 in SC. Susan Francis' mother was very likely Nancy C TINSLEY DUNNING. About 1851, William TINSLEY died at 89 years of age and left a Will in Muscogee Co GA. He named Nancy DUNNING, wife of Timothy DUNNING (deceased), as one of his daughters. Of some interest is that one of Nancy TINSELY DUNNING'S sisters was married to George NEELY of SC. Documented below is the fact that a David RITCHEY bought and sold land in Mecklenburg Co NC with a Hugh NEELY. Based on data taken from the 1850 Census and from the RITCH Cemetery (Muscogee Co GA), Emanuel was born 27 Jul 1814 in NC. He married Sarah Jane GILMORE who was born 11 Dec 1816 in Washington Co GA. The date and place of marriage are unknown to me. Their oldest known child was born in Muscogee Co GA on 6 Aug 1837. I have not yet established the migration pattern of David RITCH and his family from NC to Muscogee Co GA. The 1840 Muscogee Co GA Census is the first GA Census that I have found that enumerates a David RITCH. And, of course, some of David RITCH'S children, relatives, and friends could have gone to GA earlier than he did. I am about to begin a comparison of NC, SC, and GA Census records that enumerate any RITCH or variation of the RITCH surname. Particular attention will be paid to the given names of David, Jefferson, William, Hardy, James, John, Thomas, Edward, Jacob, or Edmond. These are the ones most likely to be ancestors or relatives of Emanuel RITCH. After a preliminary review of early Mecklenburg and Anson Co NC land and Court records, I believe that Emanuel RITCH'S ancestors farmed various parcels of land located around what was then the Anson/Mecklenburg Co NC line in the area that is probably now part of Union Co NC. Their land was also near the SC line so I assume that some of Emanuel's ancestors owned land in SC. Others that also moved to GA from NC and appear closely associated with Emanuel RITCH were the HELMS, CRY or CRYE, and BLOUNT or BLUNT families. Nancy BLUNT, 49 and born in NC, was living in Emanuel RITCH'S household in the 1850 Census. In the Upatoi District of Muscogee Co, several HELMS-households were neighbors of Emanuel RITCH and his presumed brother, Jefferson RITCH. Not far away, in Talbot Co GA, were two CRY households. Timothy DUNNING'S household was also close by in the Upatoi District. In his 1787 Mecklenburg Co NC Will, "John RITCHIE Senior" (this is an exact quote from the original Will and John RITCHIE signed his own name) named David RITCHIE as one of his sons and the Executor of his Estate. Other sons were William and John. His wife was Jane and his daughter was Elizabeth. Because he should have been legally an adult in 1787, I assume that the David RITCHIE named in John RITCHIE, Sr's Will was born before 1767. He would have been at least 90 in 1847, which means that this David Ritchie is unlikely to have been my gg grandfather. In Feb 1837, a David RITCH, who I assume was my gg grandfather, sold three (3) parcels of land in Mecklenburg Co NC to Gilmore HELMS. I also assume that Gilmore HELMS was either a relative by marriage or the actual son-in-law of David RITCH. Other than the name being the same, this is the best evidence I have at present of a direct link between this David RITCH and my gg grandfather, David RITCH. Also, in Jan 1805, a David RITCHEY sold a parcel of land in Mecklenburg Co NC to a Ruben BLUNT. Other official records also suggest a close association between the RITCHES and Ruben BLUNT or BLOUNT. Between 1777 and 1837, an individual or, more likely, individuals named David RICH, RITCHEY, etc. bought and sold a number of parcels of land in Anson and Mecklenburg Co NC. These transactions are as follows: 1. July 1777, David RICH bought land in Anson Co NC from Dennis MCCLENDON. 2. May 1797, David and Jean RITCHEY sold land in Mecklenburg Co NC to Hugh NEELY. This was from John Cambell's Barony [?]. 3. Sept 1797, David RITCHEY sold land in Mecklenburg Co NC to James KENEDY. 4. Oct 1797, David RITCHEY bought land in Mecklenburg Co NC from James RICH (RITCHEY). 5. May 1800, David RITCHEY bought land in Mecklenburg Co NC from Hugh NEELY. This was from John Cambell's Barony [?]. 6. Jan 1805, David RITCHEY sold land in Mecklenburg Co NC to Ruben BLUNT. 7. Nov 1808, David RITCHIE sold land in Anson Co NC to John HELMS. 8. July 1810, David RICHE (sic) received a land grant in Anson Co NC from the State of NC. 9. Aug 1810, David RICHEY (RICHE) sold land in Mecklenburg Co NC to Peter NEWEL. 10. Aug 1810, David RICHE sold land in Anson Co NC to John BYRD. 11. Feb 1837, David RITCH sold three (3) parcels of land in Mecklenburg Co NC to Gilmore HELMS. The earliest land transaction that I have found involving a RITCH in either Anson or Mecklenburg Co NC was 1764 when Jacob RITCHEY bought land from Justina and Arthur DOBBS. However, a Courthouse fire in 1868 destroyed many Anson Co court records, and Mecklenburg Co was not created out of Anson Co until 1762. I have not yet checked Bladen Co records out of which Anson Co was formed in 1750, but Bladen Co suffered losses of records in 1800 and again in 1893. Franklin Ingram, Raleigh, NC, f_w_i@msn.com

Based on the messages to the List ,one or two of you may find clues in the following information from Anita Green to me. She is a leader in Crye family research and my Ritch line is closely connected to the Cryes, though I do not yet know how. My great, great grandfather named a son Hardy Cry Ritch and the Executors of his Will were David Cry and my great grandfather, Emanuel Ritch. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anita Green" <agcrye@bellsouth.net> To: <f_w_i@email.msn.com> Sent: Friday, June 23, 2000 7:10 PM Subject: richie > I have just copied four Indian Pension application rolls for Francis M. > Richie, James Charles Richie, Ida Crye, and John W. I assume that I received the message below because I am still a member of the Rich-L list. However, I do not receive mail from this list. I assume that the list is quite dormant. In the past I have posted Ritch data including tombstones, etc. I can always post this data again if it will be of interest, but is anyone listening? This data is already available in the Archives. Hello to all: To anyone who may be interested, our branch of the Rich family is having it's family reunion September 16th this year. It will be held in the Pavillion at the Chico, Texas City Park which is in Wise County. Most of us are descended from Isaiah Rich of Fayette County, Pennsylvania (found on the 1790 census) through his son Samuel Rich. Any descendent of Isaiah is welcome to attend. There will be several Rich researchers sharing information. The Wise County Historical Society has Wise County genealogical information available nearby in Decatur. Plus, it is only a short drive to Dallas and Fort Worth which have some of the best genealogical libraries in the country. Of course, a branch of the National Archives is also located in Fort Worth. Email me at macemace@aol.com if you need additional information, and I will put you in contact with someone who can help. Take care, and hope you can come to see us. Best Regards, Steve Mason

OK, so there are others out there on this list. Later tonight I will post some of my Ritch material. Briefly though, I have quite a bit of Ritchie, Ritch, Rich material from Mecklenburg Co NC and surrounding areas from the late 1700's through about 1830. These Ritch's are closely allied with the Helms ancestors of the infamous Sen. Jessie Helms of NC. They are also closely related to the Cryes, etc. I research in the NC Archives and so have access to lots of Ritch material that does not relate to my direct line, but I stick pretty much to the pre 1840 material because my ancestors were in GA by then. My Ritch ancestors went to Muscogee Co GA around 1840, give or take a few years. With them went Helms, Cryes, etc. I have a family letter dating from 1890 from Hollins, AL to Columbus, GA. Also have tombstone inscriptions from one of the Ritch cemeteries in Muscogee Co GA. Also Census data, etc. Some of the Ritch descendants from this line pushed on into TX after the Civil War and before 1890. The 1890 letter speaks of them and also some of them came back to GA. My later post will detail names and dates but this gives you some idea of the Ritch lines that I am researching. As you know the Ritch name is also spelled Rich, even in official documents. Hello Dick, Craig and All, Since sending out the query on a genealogy written by Fred S. Rich on Richard Rich of Dover Neck, I have received replies from several RFAs and thanks for your quick response. Mary Lighthall referred us to Barbara Baker, with whom we talked on the telephone this week, who tells us that Fred Rich's genealogy, in process at that writing (NEHGS Oct 1964, Vol 118), was never completed. Like all Rich's descended through Richard of Eastham, I have been researching our 17th c ancestor and examining the 17th c history to see when Richard came to the colony, what his business interests were in coming to the Dover settlement, his relationship with Thomas Roberts (other than marrying Roberts' daughter Sarah), and his apparently sudden move to Eastham. My wife Mary and I are beginning (continuing) to speculate on what else might have developed so that Richard left the Dover Neck area. We have come up with several possible theories, but the basis for all of them is that he was first and foremost a mariner whose business interests were not limited to Dover Neck or to Eastham, for that matter. Secondly, and very important to our guesswork, we think he was associated with other prominent businessmen, including Thomas Roberts, who had come from England to take advantage of the opportunities here, and to participate in the commercial trade between plantations along the New England coast, down to Virginia, and to the West Indies. As our estimate of Richard's participation in this trading activity widens beyond Dover Neck and Eastham, we can imagine that Eastham would have been a very convenient place for him to settle, and a safe place for his family to live, far from the dangers of Indian raids threatening the English settlements along the coast. The Laconia Company, consisting of a number of prominent English businessmen (including Thomas Roberts) had failed to develop a thriving trade of lumber, furs and other worthwhile goods between the colony and England. Starting about 1623 with a patent "to the Laconia Company," a number of ships started carrying trade goods between the Piscataqua (Rye, Newcastle, Portsmouth, and Berwick) region to England. By 1633, adventurers who had underwritten this commercial venture realized that the experiment was a failure, withdrew their support and moved on to other opportunities in New England, some of them as far south as Virginia. Shebnah Rich (Truro, Cape Cod or Landmarks and Sea Marks) believed that Richard (1) was a contemporary of Thomas Roberts and that it was his son Richard (2), the mariner, who married Roberts' daughter and settled in Eastham. If this is so, might this be the connection by which Richard (2) is associated with the coastal trade merchants? We have recently read that an R. Rich was aboard the Sea Venture with Stephen Hopkins in 1609 when it ran aground in Bermuda. After his arrival in Jamestown, Hopkins subsequently returned to England, sailing again for New England on the Mayflower in 1620. Did R. Rich also return to England? Could Richard Rich (1) have sailed to New England with the Laconia Company in 1623? And when his son removed to Eastham, did Richard (1) return to England or look for other opportunities? It's a mystery! I hope you will be interested in the state of our "research and guesswork." Sometimes guessing and then looking for clues will produce some amazing discoveries ~ and sometimes not! /fj Frank Rich Johnson (603) 898-5237 frichj@aol.com

Rich? >> Hello: I would be interested in an answer to the question above also: I have correspondence in file between my mother and Frederick S. Rich, between early 1963 and into 1966, dealing with my fathers Rich ancestors. At that time it appears he was developing the data for a book. He later moved to Houston, Texas. There is no information on when any book was released. The Rich line connected to my Russell line with the marriage in Richmond, Wayne Co, Indiana (Aug 1834) of Jane Rich of Guilford, NC to Vinnedge Russell of Trumbull, Ohio. Jane Rich's ancestry goes back to Joseph Rich and Elizabeth Grubb Holmes Beeson. Thank you Glen Russell Arizona
