Question: Is membership in the RFA on a calendar basis of Jan-Jan, or if one subscribes in Sept, then membership is Sept-Sept? I am "brick-walled" at my ggrandfather, David Rich, born NC c.1805, married 1827 in Rutherford County, NC to Rhody Hains. David was a Baptist minister. Moved to Burke County, NC prior to 1850 where he appears in the Census with wife Rhody and 10 children. The youngest, Eli Rich, born, 1850 is my grandfather. Can anyone help? Charles E. Rich Rutherfordton, NC
Hello, Rich's! This is great! So many of us are resending family information that we''ve sent before on the chance that another list member will recognize something about it that "connects" with their line. And we all will get this list going again if we respond to each other even if we are not able to give real information. We can always give each other suggestions or maybe ask "Have you tried this?" or "could this perhaps be true?" In fact, this is how my wife Mary and I proceed in our own search. In lieu of having enough facts to definitely pinpoint data about a hard-to-get ancestor, we second-guess, based upon what we do know, sometimes about his/her brother or sister or other relative, and try to create a pattern: where they lived, why they moved, how much of the family went with them, etc. We jot down these "guesses" so that in going on a search trip, we have an outline or plan of action to follow when we get there. Lots of fun! I believe that Craig has an archive of family information sent in since the list began, but I may be wrong. In any case, a clearer line of action for each us might be to copy the email of anyone who is asking for help and respond to them directly (or through the list), so they know they have "been heard." I think others will also jump in with suggestions and, voila, the list will come alive again! Often in helping others you will find a common thread that is what you yourself need to do, but have not yet tried. Happy Labor Day! /fj Frank Rich Johnson (603) 898-5237 frichj@aol.com
Have hit brick wall trying to find parents or siblings my great grandfather James RICH who married Lucretia RICHARDSON for whom marriage license was issued in Gibson County TN on 5 Jan l852. Indications are they had children born about a follows: Julius 1852, James 1855, Frances 1857, Margaret 1860,Daniel Newton 1862, Caldonia 1864, Mary Ann 1867 and Nancy 1869. James and Lucretia Rich with four oldest children shown in 1860 census in 3rd District of Gibson County TN with Gibson Wells post office, however this is last record that can be found of James and Lucretia Rich as a couple. 1869 Tax Book for District 5, Gibson County, lists James Rich, however, this is last record we can find on either of this couple. 1880 TN census shows James Rich in household L. E. McLemore in Madison County, Daniel Rich in household Saluda Mobley in Crockett County, Caldonia in household of Joseph Richardson in Gibson County, and Mary and Nancy in household of William Crosby in Gibson County. Perhaps something happened to parents as children apparently placed with brothers and sisters of their mother. James RICH reported born in North Carolina ca 1823 and Lucretia RICHARDSON in Tennessee ca 1831. Have been unable to determine what happened to parents but have heard reports of yellow fever epidemic in this area. Unable to find any record of land ownership, wills executed, adoption or guardinship, church records, death records, or tombstones. Would appreciate any information, suggestion, or lead as to where might connect James RICH ca 1823 to parents or siblingssssssssssssssssssssssssss. J. A.
I'm looking for the parents and family of Rosanna RICH who was born about 1785, perhaps in NY state, died 29 Aug 1825 at age 40 in Elba Twp, Genesee Co. NY. Rosanna married Lemuel Lee CLARK, the son of Samuel CLARK and Mary LEE, in 1800. The marriage may have taken place in the vicinity of Fort Ann, Washington Co., NY, as Lemuel's youngest brother was born there in 1798. At least one researcher has suggested that Rosanna was the daughter of Capt. David RICH who left his first family in Charlotte, VT, and moved to Caroline, Tompkins Co., NY with another woman. A generous individual sent me copies of several articles from KINFOLK published in the 1980's that concerned Capt. David RICH, but the research at that time concentrated mainly on his life in NY and was uncertain on whether he left more children in Vermont from the first family than the two sons who later appeared in Caroline and had him brought up on charges of bigamy. There is no mention of a daughter Rosanna, however the similar names Roxanna, Roxa, & Rosannah are used in subsequent generations of David's descendants. If this ever proves out, I believe the line would be David(4), David(3), David(2), Nicholas(1). Another possiblity might be that on the Washington County GenWeb site, a James RICH is listed among the electors of Fort Ann in 1795. I haven't been able to find much on this family yet to determine if Rosanna was perhaps a daughter, but the records do show that there was a RICH family in the same area as the CLARKs at about the time Lemuel & Rosanna married. Any information or leads to Rosanna's family would be greatly appreciated. I can provide information on the CLARK descendants. Thank you. Jane Devlin Lake Orion, MI

You might be interested to know the Sharp line has been closely associated with the Rich clan in east Tennessee c. 1800 and in the Mississippi area since about 1850. A local cemetary(Singleton Springs in Tate county) is a resting place for members of both families as well as Pickles, Hunters, Presleys and other relatives. Hi all, I am still searching for the parents of my gr gr grandfather, Newton Rich, b abt 1827 TN. By 1847, he is living in Benton Co (later became Calhoun Co), Ala. He's listed on a work record with James Rich in the Lipscomb family papers. In the 1860 Calhoun Co, Ala census, he's living at Mount Polk with his children William, Albert, James, Thomas Jefferson, and an unnamed male infant (was possibly John D. Rich). His name is spelled Riche at that time. Also in his household was a female listed as Gora Riche, Elisha Gora and his children David and Josephine. Newton's wife may have been Mary Gora/Goree. Living next door were John L. Rich and his wife Nancy Noah. It is said that James and John Rich were the sons of William Rich who was the son of Jacob Rich and his first wife Philopena. Was Newton William's son also? I have been unable to find any proof that he was. I'd appreciate any information or clues anyone may have. Regards, Toni Rich Peters
Not to be out done, I thought I'd check in too! I'm Craig Rich of Holland, Michigan and I started this list almost 3 years ago. I'm glad to see someone has stirred things up a bit and got everyone "talking" again. I guess a long holiday weekend (here in the US) is just what we all needed to sit down at the computer and compose. Tonight, I went back and tracked the growth of this list. As you can see we've leveled off a bit. 15 NOV 1997 -- 18 members 7 FEB 1998 -- 100 members 14 MAR 1999 -- 204 members 13 JAN 2000 -- 262 members 4 JUL 2000 -- 272 members TODAY -- 282 members Many of us are members of the Rich Family Association at P. The RFA newsletter "Kinfolk" is worth the price of membership, not to mention the contacts, the information and the annual reunion. As a life member, I am especially proud that the RFA allowed me to design and maintain their official web page at: http://www.richfamilyassociation.org Keep watching the RFA web page. Hello all: I posted this a while back but perhaps someone out there missed it the first time I wonder if anyone, can help me find the parents of William Rich Sr. He lived in Virginia,(West Virginia), North Carolina but most of his adult life in Tennessee. My wife, Jewel O. (Clement) Richard is descended from William Rich Sr., who, according to Census data, was born in Virginia about 1780. During the War of 1812 he served in Capt. William McCowan's Company of the 4th Regiment Virginia Militia commanded by Colonel George Houston. He served from March 30, 1814 and was honorably discharged August 28, 1814. Some idea of the area where he lived may be gleaned from where he was mustered in and discharged. He stated in his land bounty application, that he was mustered in at the "falls of the Kanaway River in the State of Virginia." I believe that the Kanawha River was intended. There is a town called Kanawha Falls located in Fayette County West Virginia (previously Virginia). . At the time of the 1830 census, William Sr. was living in Roane County, Tennessee with his wife and 5 of their children. Anderson County was formed from part of Roane County in 1838. By 1840, William Sr. and William Jr. and their family were living in Anderson County. In the book Our Tennessee Cousins, a William Rich was on a committee in 1841 to form Scott County from three other counties, one of which was Anderson County. My wife’s line then descends from William Rich Jr./ Lucinda Lively. According to Census Records William Rich Jr. was born about 1807 somewhere in North Carolina. Lucinda Lively, was born in Tennessee about 1814. In the 1830 Census William Jr. was living in Roane County ,Tennessee. By the 1840 census, William Jr. and his family were living in Anderson County, Tennessee, By 1850, they were living in Scott County, Tennessee. My wife’s maternal great-grand father was one of William Jr. nine children, Sabert Rich, born 04 May 1854 in Powell's Valley, Scott County, Tennessee, married Catharine Genelia "Tine" Finger on 04 March 1875 in Haywood County, North Carolina. They settled in Maggie Valley, Haywood County, NC. One of their eight children was Annie L Rich, born 20 August 1883 in Maggie Valley. Annie married William Andrew Clement on 30 October 1898. They were my wife’s maternal grand-parents. Ted Richard
hi, i'm here also. it has been quite a while since i asked so... i am looking for rich family members from the boston, mass., evertte mass. area. late 1800's early 1900's. i have only this: 3 brothers came to usa and landed in boston in the mid 1800's from germany. they all 3 married. 2 had children, one did not. one's name may be matthew or matteus. one married a sophie (mcintyre ?). one of the 3 brothers had 3 boys. one of the boys was named walter rich, born in everette in 1896. the 3 brothers and 2 of the wives died of a "plague" , epidemic that hit boston about 1900. the 3 boys were sent to a catholic orphanage in tres rivoires (sp?), three rivers in montreal. when they got out they all returned to the boston area and were carpenters, maybe installing wood flooring in triple deckers. not much to go on, i know... kay "This is my simple religion. Hi, We would like to extend an invitation to all researchers lookin for the Rich and associated surnames. We will be having our reunion in the air-conditioned tea room at Standing Stone State Park on July 7. 2001. We will be having a cemetary tour on July 6th. Come and join us for our pot luck lunch (good cookes in Tennessee), fellowship and swap genealogy. Here is the line as we find it today (of course it may change with new info) after 30 years + of personal research and a lot of shared research to help us complete this line of Rich's. I believe that an Obediah Rich that lived in Currituck Co., NC in about 1709 is part of this line. Just need the connecting pieces. We assume at this point in time and with probably research that our line is from Timothy Rich of Goochland, Co., Va. (Julia Rich Hogan did a lot of research on this line and I do agree with a lot of what she concluded). This Timothy Rich died before 1736 in that county. His children were: Jeremiah Parker Rich Timothy Rich Sarah Rich William Rich Nimrod Rich Catherine Rich and his wife Catherine was pregnant with son David. We come thru Jeremiah Rich who moved to Wake Co., NC. His children were: Jessee Rich Judith Rich Dodd John Rich William Rich Susannah Bridges Jacob Rich Charity Rich Charles Rich (executiver of will along with Jeremiah's brother TImothy) Here is where this family becomes a challenge. The suddenly start using the surname Reach part of the time and Rich the other part. I found this by accident and had to go back and spend 2 days retracing my research to put all of the pieces in order. Our line contiues from Jeremiah to son William. This William is said to have married a full blooded Cherokee Indian - Polly Hooker, yet in the Bible the last name looks like Ellis. Here is another challenge - what was William's wife name and where are her Cherokee records (from the looks of these children - there is definitly Indian Blood in this family.) From census records we know that William and his wife had several children, but todate, we can only prove Jessee and John as 2 of his many children. We have proven this thru info from Cherokee Applications. Who were Jessee and John's brothers and sisters????????????? How many of them moved from Surry Co., NC to Cumberland or Monroe Co., Ky and where are they now???????????? Jessee Rich married Elizabeth Savage, daughter of Leven Savage and they had 14 children. We have some challenges here also. The will of son Allen mentions a brother Obediah, but the Bible records do not include him as a child of Jessee and Elizabeth. Was Jessee married before and Obediah is from this marriage?????? There are other challenges that I have pointed out in my book "Our Rich Heritage - We've Only Just Begun". So, if you think you are related to this bunch, let me know. There is always room to put another branch on the tree. Would like to find old Timothy's parents and see if they don't fit in with the Riches from the East. We also have a newsletter and welcome anyone searching Rich ancestors. The more we get our names out, the better the chance we will find the missing piece we need. I am retired now and hope to put out book 2 on this family before our reunion next year. Keep in touch and if I can help, just let me know. Donita Morris-Rich dmorris@accessus.net
I am fairly new to the list and need help. My RICH"s have lived in the town of Bethany, Genesee co, NY at least since 1840 when John M. RICH is found there. John was married to Hannah A. Miller?(unsure of her last name). In 1840, they had 2 daughters the first born in 1837. They went on to have 10 children. Number 10 was my g grandfather, Daniel Miller RICH. There are still many RICH"s in Genesee co. I am looking for parents of John M. (may be Mortimer as 1st son named Mortimer) and his birthplace. Just any tidbit would be greatly appreciated.
