Hi: Looking for my gg grandmother, Sarah Rich. Even though I have a fair amount of information, I haven't had much luck finding information on her and I'm hoping there is someone out there who might be able to point me in the right direction. Sarah was born in Morristown, VT 25 Sep 1842. She died in No. Yarmouth, ME 11 Nov 1916. Her mother is given on her death certificate as Emily Davis, but I have no confirmation of that. Sarah married Steven Kingsley Vaughan, probably at Hyde Park, VT. Steven was born 10 June 1843 at Plattsburgh, NY and died 27 Feb 1927 at No. Yarmouth, ME. They had five children: Celinda, Averill, Elnathan Adnirom, Luman, & Matty. All the children were born in Hyde Park, VT.
Rosalie, Have you checked with the Tremont Historical Society? My great- grandmother was Lillian May Rich Reed of Bass Harbor. I don't have your Rich in my files but there probably is a connection. I did look Sally and William up in the vital records of Mt. Desert. William is spelled Davies there. You have probably already run across that. For more information on Jacob Rich check the following web site. I wrote to Jeanne about this data but I must have done that on a different computer because I can't find the files right now. http://members.tripod.com/~jeanw/rich.html "(Much of the data in this outline is from the book "Jacob Rich of Fayette Co., PA" by Golda Peckham Suttie. Golda's mother Stella Hurst Peckham began the research in the 1920's, which Golda carried on. She completed the book in 1978. To my knowledge only 3 copies of the book were printed, one for the Suttie family, one for the DAR in Washington DC, and one for me.) Quoting information from a Noah family manuscript by Elizabeth Noah Yost there appears to be at least one common denominator between the Orange county VA Nassau-Seigen immigrants and those of Orange county, NC-which was Michael Holt. Michael Holt was a very prominent and active leader in the migration from the Palatine area to VA and NC, and most likely PA as well. Michael Holt, Thomas Rich, and Peter Noe were among prominent landowners and civic leaders in the Orange county NC area after 1755. Michael moved from VA to NC about this same time. The same Nassau-Seigen family names appear regularly in PA, VA and NC. Some of the earliest of these immigrants also settled in Culpepper and Fauquier counties in VA. Some left PA because the price of land had become too high and grants were plentiful in NC. Hope this may help a bit, though I'm not as studied on this PA/VA aspect as Ms. Lighthall or LeeAnn. But I'm very interested in any concrete ties to be found. The Saarland/Alsace/Palatine area had been so devasted by the 30 years war that large numbers of Swiss farmers were imported to repopulate the region. Even Darmstadt(oiutisde the area) suffered such losses that the population level did not rise to the pre war year 1614 until the year 1930 in this century. And for the Rich researchers who are not members, the address is: Rich Family Association P.O. Box 142 Wellfleet, Massachusetts 02667 And they do have a researcher, Diane Rich Hinshaw, who is available to answer questions about the Fayette Co., PA Jacob Rich line, for RFA members. Contact the RFA at the above address for information on how to join. By the way, my ancestor is Isaiah Rich also of Fayette Co., PA, found on the 1790 census, who apparently is not related to Jacob. Hi Leann and all There is a great deal of evidence that both the Rich(Reich) and Noah(Neu/Noe) families of Orange county NC originated from the Palatine(Saarland-esp Breitfurt) and there is a good possibility they were Swiss. Many Swiss had been imported into this area because of the mortality of so many residents during the long wars. Also there are a number of circumstantial cases, like MS. Lighthall mentions, that seem to connect the PA and VA & NC families. Many of the family records were seized and burned by the pesky Tories during the Rev war. For instance a history professor/writer(Ruth Blackwelder) wrote that 'by 1751 settlers were flocking in(to Orange county NC), mostly from Pennsylvania'. Moreover, the use of certain first names(John, Thomas, Jacob, Susannah/Hannah) common in the different locations lends to the credibility of the theory that all were related and originated from the same area of Europe. Any further info will be received gratefully by myself and no doubt many forum members. Hi, M L this Jacob you are looking for, is that the Jacob listed in the 1790 census of orange co virginia? there is a jacob listed in the will of jeremiah rich dated jan 17, 1782, from wake co n. c. that lists j.s three sons william, jacob, and charles. This Jacob is listed with jeremiah's widow mary,(census) and so from that i took them to be related. I have found reference to another jacob, but have not made the connection yet. anything i find i will pass along: Ron Rich, Millbrae,CA
HI is this a chat room? Great sorry but I am in the midst of a family crisis and can't give this any time. Jacob, if he is the brother of John Rich--aka Johannes Reich-- and some say he is-- came from Rhiendurchheim, on the Rhine river near Worms. In her book about John Rich of Maidstone, Julia Rich Hogan has a nice story of the early life of John--well at least his ancestors for two geneation. The sticky part is : who is Jacob and is he a brother. I can't look all that up right now and don't know anyone on the net who could help. One genealogist who is a descendant of Jacob and studied this is now in a nursing home and doesn't answer mail. I can't take time to find and send out the data from Kinfolk. Sorry to be in such a mess about all this right now. In a few weeks I may be able to help more. ML in VT. hope you are all cousins. BG ( : - )
Yes, there is a Jacob of Fayette County, PA. Some of his descendants have some information about him. There is some evidence that he may be a brother of John Rich of Maidstone, VT who came from the Palatine region now part of Germany in 1751. RFA's "Kinfolk" has some data about this. Right now I can't look it up but will try to get back to you later. Anyone else on the Rich-L list have anything on this? Mary G. Lighthall, descendant of John of Maidstone

GA, NC, RITCH, CRYE, DUNNING, TINSLEY, HELMS, BLUNT, NEELY, GILMORE during the 1800's It has been a long while since I posted. A new member might connect to the following, I hope. Search for the Ancestors of Emanuel (Emanual) RITCH (1814-1884) On 6 Dec 1847, David RITCH signed his Will in Muscogee Co GA. His wifes identity and the place and date of his birth are unknown to me. Based on both the 1850 Census and circumstantial evidence, I assume that some, if not all, of his children were born in what was then known as Mecklenburg Co NC. However, I have not proven a definite link between any specific NC Ritches and the David RITCH who died in Muscogee Co GA. Emanuel RITCH, was 33 and also living in Muscogee Co GA when his father, David RITCH, signed his Will. Emanuel was likely the youngest of David RITCHS sons. According to his Will, David RITCHS sons were: William, J Jefferson, Edward, Hardy Cry, and Emanuel. Daughters were: Mary, Anna HELMS, and Hannah HEIGHT. Emanuel and David CRY were the Executors. All children of David RITCH that I have found so far enumerated in the 1850 GA Census were born in NC. In 1851, Emanuel Ritch was named the Executor of Timothy DUNNINGS Will and also named as guardian of Susan F. DUNNING, Timothys youngest daughter. She is surely the Francis DUNNING who was four in the 1850 Census household of Timothy DUNNING. Timothy DUNNING was born about 1798 in SC. Susan Francis mother was very likely Nancy C TINSLEY DUNNING. About 1851, William TINSLEY died at 89 years of age and left a Will in Muscogee Co GA. He named Nancy DUNNING, wife of Timothy DUNNING (deceased), as one of his daughters. Of some interest is that one of Nancy TINSELY DUNNINGS sisters was married to George NEELY of SC. Documented below is the fact that a David RITCHEY bought and sold land in Mecklenburg Co NC with a Hugh NEELY. Based on data taken from the 1850 Census and from the RITCH Cemetery (Muscogee Co GA), Emanuel was born 27 Jul 1814 in NC. He married Sarah Jane GILMORE who was born 11 Dec 1816 in Washington Co GA. The date and place of marriage are unknown to me. Their oldest known child was born in Muscogee Co GA on 6 Aug 1837. I have not yet established the migration pattern of David RITCH and his family from NC to Muscogee Co GA. The 1840 Muscogee Co GA Census is the first GA Census that I have found that enumerates a David RITCH. And, of course, some of David RITCHS children, relatives, and friends could have gone to GA earlier than he did. After a preliminary review of early Mecklenburg and Anson Co NC land and Court records, I believe that Emanuel RITCHS ancestors farmed various parcels of land located around what was then the Anson/Mecklenburg Co NC line in the area that is probably now part of Union Co NC. Their land was also near the SC line so I assume that some of Emanuels ancestors owned land in SC. Others that also moved to GA from NC and appear closely associated with Emanuel RITCH were the HELMS, CRY or CRYE, and BLOUNT or BLUNT families. Nancy BLUNT, 49 and born in NC, was living in Emanuel RITCHS household in the 1850 Census. In the Upatoi District of Muscogee Co, several HELMS-households were neighbors of Emanuel RITCH and his presumed brother, Jefferson RITCH. Not far away, in Talbot Co GA, were two CRY households. Timothy DUNNINGS household was also close by in the Upatoi District. In his 1787 Mecklenburg Co NC Will, John RITCHIE Senior (this is an exact transcription from the original Will and John RITCHIE signed his own name) named David RITCHIE as one of his sons and the Executor of his Estate. Other sons were William and John. His wife was Jane and his daughter was Elizabeth. Because he should have been legally an adult in 1787 to be named Executor, I assume that the David RITCHIE named in John RITCHIE, Srs Will was born before 1770. He would have been at least 77 and probably several years older in 1847, which means that this David RITCHIE might not be the David RITCH who died in Muscogee Co GA. In Feb 1837, a David RITCH, who I assume was the David RITCH who died in Muscogee Co GA, sold three (3) parcels of land in Mecklenburg Co NC to Gilmore HELMS. I also assume that Gilmore HELMS was either a relative by marriage or the actual son-in-law of David RITCH. Other than the name being the same, this is the best evidence I have at present of a direct link between this David RITCH and the David RITCH who died in Muscogee Co GA. Also, in Jan 1805, a David RITCHEY sold a parcel of land in Mecklenburg Co NC to a Ruben BLUNT. Other official records also suggest a close association between the RITCHES and Ruben BLUNT or BLOUNT. Between 1777 and 1837, an individual or, more likely, individuals named David RICH, RITCHEY, etc. bought and sold a number of parcels of land in Anson and Mecklenburg Co NC. These transactions are as follows: 1. July 1777, David RICH bought land in Anson Co NC from Dennis MCCLENDON. 2. May 1797, David and Jean RITCHEY sold land in Mecklenburg Co NC to Hugh NEELY. This was from John Cambells Barony [?]. 3. Sept 1797, David RITCHEY sold land in Mecklenburg Co NC to James KENEDY. 4. Oct 1797, David RITCHEY bought land in Mecklenburg Co NC from James RICH (RITCHEY). 5. May 1800, David RITCHEY bought land in Mecklenburg Co NC from Hugh NEELY. This was from John Cambells Barony [?]. 6. Jan 1805, David RITCHEY sold land in Mecklenburg Co NC to Ruben BLUNT. 7. Nov 1808, David RITCHIE sold land in Anson Co NC to John HELMS. 8. July 1810, David RICHE (sic) received a land grant in Anson Co NC from the State of NC. 9. Aug 1810, David RICHEY (RICHE) sold land in Mecklenburg Co NC to Peter NEWEL. 10. Aug 1810, David RICHE sold land in Anson Co NC to John BYRD. 11. Feb 1837, David RITCH sold three (3) parcels of land in Mecklenburg Co NC to Gilmore HELMS. The earliest land transaction that I have found involving a RITCH in either Anson or Mecklenburg Co NC was 1764 when Jacob RITCHEY bought land from Justina and Arthur DOBBS. However, a Courthouse fire in 1868 destroyed many Anson Co court records, and Mecklenburg Co was not created out of Anson Co until 1762. I have not yet checked Bladen Co records out of which Anson Co was formed in 1750, but Bladen Co suffered losses of records in 1800 and again in 1893. Franklin Ingram Raleigh, NC f_w_i@email.msn.com

Dear Rich list members: Wow! The Rich list has grown by more than 10% in the past week or so! We now have 204 of us willing to share information on our RICH ancestry. I've noticed many of the newer members have southern (US) Rich roots while there also are a number of UK based researchers among us. While this is still a fairly small list we should be reaching the point of "critical mass" -- that is, where there are enough of us to really begin to help each other. I'm afreaid I'm not much help when it comes to the southern US Riches, but perhaps some of our newwer members can begin helping in that area. I always feel bad when a posting goes unanswered but, rest assured, there are many of us who look at each one and dig into our archives to try to find an answer -- many times to no avail. Please remember that the Rich Family Association in Wellfleet, Massachusetts (USA) is still the best way to really begin your search. They are the repository of a wealth of information, especially on New England Riches. Good luck to all of you as you explore your Rich heritage! -- Craig R. Hi all, Back again because I found some new ancestors and want to see if anybody else has any of them. I have Thomas Rich b. 1772 in Pa. m. Mary Ann Berry. They moved from Fayette Co., Pa to Hamilton County Ohio in 1797. The father of Thomas is Jacob. I haven't found any more info on Jacob yet. Thomas had Thomas B., John, and Benjamin as far as I know. there may be more children. Thomas B. married Christiana Flommerfelt in Hamilton County, Ohio. They had children named Eliza, Alfred, Minard, Mary A., Salina, John, Belinda, Martha, Mariah, Hulda, Edward and Belindsey in Hamilton County, Oh. Does anyone out there have info on Jacob? He had a son in 1772 so he was born ?. A member recently introduced some new and interesting information on the Rich/Neu families of Grainger county TN in the early 1800s. Grainger county was a center for Rich, Noe, and related lines c. 1800. Joseph Noe was the son of Peter and Hannah Neu/Noe of Orange County NC and he was appointed guardian for Joseph Rich in May of 1793 in official Orange County documents, in bond with Peter Fogelman for 500 lbs. Susannah(Hannah) Noe(sister of Joseph Noe above) was married to Thomas Rich Sr. who was killed at the battle of Gates defeat near Camden SC in 1780. We know Thomas and Susannah had three sons who fought in the war for independence in the Carolinas(Thomas Jr., Peter, and Jacob Sr.). These three received land grants in TN. Another possible brother is Benjamin. But the Joseph Rich above was born prior to 1780. He was likely named after Joseph Noe. The only known Rich relatives in the area were the family members of his sister Susannah. While not conclusive, it seems obvious that this Joseph Rich was a young son of Thomas Rich Sr. & Susannah and nephew of Joseph Noe. Others will likely have more information to add to this line. Cheers Bobby Rich brich@panola.com
