Hello: I am giving warning again that this and all Rootsweb mail lists will be closing down as such. I recommend replacement as following: Rhodesian Registry: https://www.facebook.com/groups/rhodesianregistry/ Rhodesian Pioneers and Early Settlers Society: https://www.facebook.com/groups/42930114782/ This is a "strong" recommendation (As suggested by Barry). It will be different, not a plain text environment. There are several 1000 people here, photo content can be jaw dropping, mildly put. It is not necessary for me to open a new list elsewhere. Continue your searches, you will find, and I Hope You find Your Way Back in Time. As always, Yours Sincerely - Bart. 3. Bill There is quite a lot of information around concerning the Cloete and Roberts families. I am quite willing to help you if you could be a little more specific in what you are seeking. My initial search shows that Winifred was born in 1896 and the Roberts family came from Wimbledon in the1790's Regards Derek M Wallace On Mon, 13 Jan 2020 at 10:56, William Heyneke <williamheyneke@bigpond.com> wrote: > Dear Sir / Madam, > > I refer your above email address, and in regards to finding early > Rhodesian pioneers. > > My Grandfather on my mothers side was one Lawrence Cloete, married > Winifred Hall Roberts of Stutaheim, Eastern Cape South Africa. 1. [TPS] Leave Your Mark....
    2. Bart Simon
    3. Hello: One might want to consider to leave their 'mark' on this list and group before it closes, for others to find you in time to come. If you so wish, feel free to post your interests, and may include your email address if you so wish to put that out, etc. If you have any ancestor you can't find, or question, etc., a good time to put it out, 'to the list'. I connect to Thomas Ignatius Ferreira, of the Henry-Steyn Trek, and another. 576 persons were submitted for inclusion into the 'The Ferreira Book', and printed by a RSA University quite some time ago, a limited edition. It had many or most Ferreira Zim lines quite updated to about 1995 or so. Thomas Moodie, Moodie Trek Leader, is my great uncle. His daughter Elsie Elizabeth Moodie, was some time a nurse at the Memorial Hospital, Bulawayo. About 2007 or so, this was used as an office for the National Parks Board in Byo. The building, or remainder of it, is fairly small, and almost on the street, I think it was. It is just off Robert Mugabe Way, to the left, coming into town from the Trade Fair side, can someone say exactly which street it is in ?. I know where it is when I am there.... Grant Berry: I am not completely certain, but if you are the person I 'think' you are, we have met, and I have even been into your home once when you were there.... I bet I got ya a wondering.... If in the 70's you lived in the suburb of H., Byo, it might be you, I remember your? name as it is. Cheers - Bart....

    3. Thanks Grant. Just asking, to what extent is the Rhodesian Pioneers FB list orientated towards genealogical interests ?. Bart.... 'Rhodesian Pioneers and Early Settlers Society' Facebook group is the way forward, I think.

    3. I would suggest those that have been contributing, and those that have been following, the Rhodesian-Pioneers Rootsweb list now sign up to the 'Rhodesian Pioneers and Early Settlers Society' Facebook group. The good discussions that we have had could be continued there. https://www.facebook.com/groups/42930114782/ (Links to the archived Rootsweb stuff could be posted there to simplify finding it in the future.) There are two other sites, each with a different focus: 'Rhodesian Registry' - a site dedicated to Rhodesian genealogy, questions on family, etc. https://www.facebook.com/groups/rhodesianregistry/ 'Zimbabwe & Rhodesia history 50 years or more back' - a site dedicated to historical facts, questions, answers, experiences https://www.facebook.com/groups/766517063548268/ regards, Barry Brown

    1. [TPS] All Rootsweb Mail Lists Closing Down....
    2. Bart Simon
    3. Hello: The message has been put out that all lists at Rootsweb will close down for posting etc., but archives will be kept and searchable etc. I already 2 months ago, copied down the list of emails for all members on this list, so we can still be in contact, in case, like some other RSA lists seem to have had the problem, where they apparently were closed without any warning etc. We have to the end of next month to 'move over elsewhere'. May we join together and decide where we would like to go or join up etc. Thank you - Bart....

    3. Dear Sir / Madam, I refer your above email address, and in regards to finding early Rhodesian pioneers. My Grandfather on my mothers side was one Lawrence Cloete, married Winifred Hall Roberts of Stutaheim, Eastern Cape South Africa. My Grandfather, from what I have gleaned was also from the same area. I am not sure of my facts as my mother died when I was aged 6, so have very little info to go on. What I have been told by a distant cousin, is that Lawrence and Winifred Cloete supposedly traveled up to then N Rhodesia by ox wagon, either after the second Boer war or the first world war. I can understand this after the Boer war, but not WW1 as their was already a rail line into N Rhodesia at the time. They may well have traveled by ox wagon from S Rhodesia? What I do know is that they were early N Rhodesian pioneers, who settled in the Kalomo district of N Rhodesia. They are mentioned in the chronicles of the 1820 settlers, but details are scarce. While I am not able to supply any other info, and appreciate this is a long shot, can you help. Regards Bill Heyneke
