    3. Hi, DeDe, I have the 1880 census on CDs and thought I'd try to find something for you. I found a listing in Danby, Rutland Co., VT of the family of Ira H. Vail, farmer, age 58, he and parents born VT; Ada Vail, dau., housekeeper, age 19, she and father born VT, mother born RI; Amelia Reynolds, dau., age 36, she and father born VT, mother born RI; Ralph Reynolds, grandson, attending school, age 8, he and mother born NY, father born VT; Louise Reynolds, granddau., age 4, she and parents b. NY; Lloyd Reynolds, grandson, age 1, born VT, father born NY, mother b. VT; Elmer Baker, farm laborer, age 18, he and parents born VT. I looked in the History of Danby by J.C. Williams (1869) and find on page 279 the following for Ira H. Vail, m. Mary, da. of Ephraim Chace, and succeeded to the homestead. He is a thrifty farmer, a man of integrity and industry, having accumulated a good property. He has been a selectman two years; a Justice of the Peace five years, and was a member of the Legislature in 1859. They have raised a family of seven children: Edward L., m. Julia Fish; Amelia, William Henry, m. Alice Reynolds, and lives in Collins, N.Y.; Semantha, Lydia, d. in 1864, aged 11; Jennie and Ada. There is no listing in there for Reynolds, but I would guess that Amelia might have married a Reynolds and had the children listed in the census. In another section of the History of Danby, under the Nelson Colvin write-up, it says that a son, Benajah, m. first Amelia, da. Ira H. Vail, and next Lucinda Hosmore, and lives with his father. So it looks as if Amelia Vail didn't marry a Reynolds if this is correct. BUT! I just found a correction listed at the end of the book: On page 279, in sketch of Vail, Ira H. add, Amelia m. Byron Reynolds of Collins, NY. So it looks as if the Colvin information must be wrong. As for Gilbert and Mary Reynolds, I find a couple with that name living in Ridgefield, Fairfield Co., CT, in the household of Edward A. Reynolds, ret. farmer, age 84, he and parents born NY; Laura Reynolds, relationship listed as other, age 81, she and parents born NY; Margaret M. Smith, housekeeper, other, mulatto, age 27, she and parents born NY; Percy Reynolds, farm laborer, grandson, age 18, he and parents born NY; Gilbert Reynolds, agent for furniture, son, age 45, he and parents born NY; Mary, dau-in-law, age 42, she and parents born NY. I don't think they are the parents of your Ralph. There is an N. Ralph Reynolds, age 10 (born 1870), in Lawrence, Essex Co., MA, in the household of F. Nason Reynolds, wood turner, age 39, he and parents born NH; Faustina Reynolds, keep house, wife, age 41, she and parents born ME; N. Ralph Reynolds, at school, son, age 10, he and father b. NH, mother b. ME. What do you think? I'd guess that the family in Danby might be a good one to follow up on. Good luck! Joann Nichols DeDe Meek wrote: > Hi all and Happy Holidays! I believe if I can get additional information about Gilbert and Mary, I'll be able to make the remaining connections.
