    1. Re: [Reynolds] DNA projects: Cheryl: Missouri

    3. Cheryl, Currently Family Tree DNA FTDNA has 13 geographical projects in place. These are for specific family groups or family associations. The Reynolds surname does not to my knowledge have a specific project in place for a specific geographical area. However, each Reynolds participant who has a paper trail of his ancestors, in reality provides geographical clues of his ancestors. From what I understand from the recent post at RootsWeb [which by the way I have responded to], this is a suggestion for those who have DNA tested or are contemplating the same to participate in a project to identify their family ancestors who may have lived in specific cities associated with the project. The Chelsea, MA project as indicated from the information given at FTDNA is: "We will cover any name found in the three towns. But the idea is that you have records of someone from the towns." http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Chelsea.Revere.Winthrop.Ma/ In other words, this is a generalized gathering of all surnames that may have been associated with three certain towns in MA. FTDNA has : "Over 1,100 SURNAME PROJECTS, Over 8,000 unique surnames, over 24,000 records in the database, over 9,000 distinct 12-marker haplotypes, and over 7,000 distinct 25-marker haplotypes." This is a good start in identifying surnames and to begin the process of learning more about each through DNA testing. The Chelsea Project is a program to expand the basics of DNA testing. I presume that in time, more persons interested in expanding genetic genealogy to their family history research will begin geographical projects to provide more clues and to pinpoint specific geographical regions where there ancestors may have resided. IMHO, this will be based on paper trails of some fashion, as well as specific DNA testing. Overall, geographical DNA projects are a means of providing clues to one's family roots. I wholeheartedly support such projects for genetic genealogy. Cheryl, if you have your cousin tested, then you could start a geographical project, perhaps, of the places your ancestors resided in Missouri, or elsewhere. As more Reynolds do the basic tests, then geographical projects will become a possibility and eventually provide a warehouse of ancestral clues.
