I did find one Reynolds in NY in my book "Genealogies of CT Families From the New England Historical & Genealogical Register - Vol II", p 523. Samuel Smithson m. Margaret Williams & had 8 children. Child #7 was Joseph Benjamin Smithson, who m. Hannah Waldo of Chatham, NY & removed to Northampton, NY. They had 2 children - Hannah Cornelia Smithson, who married Sylvester Reynolds of Chatham, and Samuel Waldo Smithson. Alternate spellings for Reynolds are Rennals, Reinalls, Reniolds, Runnels - and many others. I also have some families from Stamford & Rocky Hill, CT. I have a Lucy Seymour who m. Martin Kellogg & she died in Winfield, NY 19 Sept. 1839. They had 9 children, 1st being Laura Kellogg, who m. Ambs Reynolds on 20 Mar 1808. Also married to the Seymour family, Orin D. Reed, b. in Sodus in 1841, d. in Rock Falls, IL m. in Flint, MI, Electa J. Hurd, b. 27 June 1851 in Cranetown, Seneca County, NY. After Orin died, Electa married Leonard M. Reynolds, who died in Frankenmuth, MI. Thirdly, she m. Edward Flint, who d. in Port Angeles, Clallam County, Washington. Orrin served in the Civil War, was injured, but re-enlisted, taken prisoner in Oct. 1864 in Fair Oaks, VA & was discharged in 1865. Electa lived in at least 4 states, NY, IL, MI & WA. Just in case it might tie in somewhere - Levi Benton was a first settler of Yates County, NY, freeman 1775, removed from CT to MA & back to CT, then NY, where the town of "Benton" was named in his honor. In 1816, he removed to Indiana, where he died. He m. Mary, dau. of Abner & Hannah (Dyer) Woodworth of Salisbury, CT. They had 10 children. Child #7, Joseph Benton m. Aney Reynolds in 1807. They lived in Ind. & he died in 1872. I will look through more records and books, specifically for NY Reynolds. Asa & Electa & Mehitable seem quite elusive! Lynn

Surnames: Reynolds, Sumner, Cooley, Jeffords Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/TJDBAIB/1259.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Lynn, Thank you for the info. It is helpful. C.S.'s daughter-in-law recorded the family history and thats what has been passed down the family. Now I'm wondering if they really did come here from Canada. Suppose they came here from England and lived in CT or RI and then moved to NY? There was a Baptist migration from the Rhode Island area to the New York area where he was born. (C.S. later became a Baptist minister in Florida.) If they did move here from Canada, why would they move to CT and then back to NY? Or maybe the Cooley/Sumners/Reynolds lived in NY together and then some of them moved to CT? Also, my great-grandfather (C.S.'s son) was named Sumner Jeffords Reynolds. The Jeffords name coming from C.S.'s wife's brother-in-law who was a Jeffords. Sumner must be a family name but I can't make the connection. I'm wondering if C.S. was the son of Asa and Electra? With the dates you supplied that would be the same time frame. I have copies of newspaper articles about Rev. C.S.! Reynolds, if you're interested I will send them to you if you supply me with your email address. Thanks, Wendy

On a recent trip to Salt Lake City I was able to establish that my grandfather, William Robert Reynolds, was descended from one or the other of the brothers, Tilton or Thomas. I think it's Tilton but need to study the information I gathered there, which has to wait until I complete a move from CA to Idaho. I was greatly interested in the earlier family and you indicated you have them back to 1504 in England. How may I obtain that info from you? Please respond at your earliest convenience. I'm so excited! Thank you in advance. Kathryn Greer

Surnames: Reynolds, Moore, Waterman, Pease, Cooley/Coley, Chapin, Prudden, Sumner Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/TJDBAIB/1259.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I have Flora on the 1860 CT Federal census in Hartford. Flora's father, Edward, and at least two of his brothers, fought in the Civil War. Two of his brothers fought & died in the Civil War. His brother, Walter, survived Andersonville, but died in a Florence, SC prison thereafter. There is a gravestone for him in the Palisado Cemetery in Windsor, CT, but he probably is not buried there. I have no dates other than that, to gauge. If I estimated his birth date, it would probably be 1830 to 1840. Edward's parents MAY have been Asa & Electa and estimated birth dates on them would probably be about 1810 to 1820?? They had many children, including Edward, his brothers & sisters. Other than that, from family information & their research (ongoing), Asa's mother may have been Mehitable or Mehitabel (surname unknown), estimated birth date of 1790 to 1800?? The railroad could be a connecting issue, and where it was running at the time. I'm not sure of the time frame of when th! e various lines began, but Edward was supposedly a baggage master. I know nothing of Flora's husband, James Moore, other than his name. From that generation downward, I have fairly precise information, as they are direct lineage, most of which I used for DAR membership. They are mostly Waterman & Pease, but The Cooley family intermarried into both families, I believe. Samuel Cooley/Coley and Ann Prudden were my 10th GGrandparents. Abilenah Cooley/Coley, their daughter, was my 9th GGrandmother, and she married Japhet Chapin. I also have more information on those families. I'm transcribing some local cemeteries, and have many Reynold stones that I want to, hopefully, tie in. I saw many Sumner graves in Windham, CT today, and they were also a very prestigious name in Bolton, CT. I could get photos of those for you. I have limited personal knowledge of that family. Does any of this information help you?

I think Cooley Sumner was a grandson. I recently found that C.S. was born in Belfast, New York in 1830. He had a sister named Jennie and he moved to Florida in 1850 because of his health. Not sure when Jennie moved, but she was the first schoolteacher in Clearwater FL. He didn't fight in the Civil War probably because I have read articles mentioning him being an invalid. He could be their son but I was thinking there was a generation in between.
