    1. [RENSHAW-L] Renshaw's from Lancashire Manchester and Queenborough Kent
    2. ROSSLYN HAMILTON
    3. I am seeking information on my G. G. Grandfather: John Charles Renshaw who was born in Queensborough, Kent, England and his wife Sarah Renshaw, nee Denton from Bolton, Lancashire, England . John's, Father's name and his Father's Occupation as listed on John's Death Certificate in 1925 in Victoria is: William Renshaw, Occupation - Soldier; John's Mother's name: Caroline Renshaw -(Maiden name unknown). John's Charles, Occupation at the time of his death as listed on his Death Certificate is Engineer. If John's Father was a Soldier I am not sure for which War -"Crimean"??? William was probably a Soldier at some time earlier in his life, as he was noted as a Labourer on the 1881 census of England whilst he was living with John Charles, his son, and John's wife Sarah, in Manchester John and Sarah were obviously married in England before they Immigrated to Australia and had been living at 101 Teignmouth Street, Manchester, Lancashire at the time of the 1881 Census, along with John's Father, William Renshaw age 59, Labourer, (DOB approx 1822) who was born in Manchester, Lancashire England and John and Sarah's son Peter Renshaw, Age 4 who was born in Bolton Lancashire. John is listed as age 31, Mechanic and Sarah age 25, on the 1881 Census in England. John and Sarah Renshaw Immigrated to Australia some time in the early 1880's first to Queensland ( Cooktown) with at least one child, Peter DOB: 1877, England; They had another 4 children in Qld before moving South to Victoria, where more children were born. Their fourth child born in Qld was: Sarah Alice Renshaw DOB:1888, who married William Henry Pretty in 1908 in Victoria; they had 9/10 children, the youngest was Violet Mavis Pretty (My Mother) who married Allan Plate in 1951 and had 5 children - I am their third child. My G.G.Grandmother, Sarah Denton, was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England, in approx 1856. Her Father's name was Peter Denton, Fitter, as listed on her Death Certificate in 1923 and her Mother's name as Mary Denton nee Allen. On the 1881 Census for England their is a Peter Denton Age 61, living at 12, St John Street, Little Bolton who lists his Occupation as Machine Fitter and born in Lancashire, Prescott, England (approx 1820). However his Spouse's name is listed as Caroline Denton age 54, born in Middleton Lancashire, THEREFORE I cannot confirm that this Peter Denton on the 1881 Census is Sarah's Father, because Peter's Spouse's name, is different than the Mother's name listed on Sarah's Death Certificate. However it is possible that this Caroline is Peter's Second Wife?? Sarah married John.C. Renshaw in England and they then emmigrated to Australia in the early 1890's; (No Known details of this Marriage as yet.) But from the Date of their son Peter Renshaw, aged 4 years at the time of the 1881 Census, one could assume that they were Married some time between 1875, when Sarah would have been 19 years old and 1877 when Peter was born and Sarah would have been 21 years of age ( That is if they married before their son Peter was born in 1877) John was born in Queenborough, Kent in approx 1850, and his Father William Renshaw was born in Manchester, Lancashire in approx 1822. One of John's son's - Albert Edward is listed on John and Sarah's Grave stone at the Melbourne Cemetrey as Albert Edward Renshaw. >From Documents I researched in Australia, Albert's Militiary Number was 178 Spr - (Obviously Sapper Private) 2nd Fld Coy England who died at Galliopoli on 26th April 1915. I have details of his Memorial from the Australian War Graves Commission who has him buried at Lone Pine he was a "Sapper" which is a Mechanic of sorts who has something to do with the Big Guns. From the Date he died one can see that he was killed the day after the troops landed at Galliopoli on the 25th April 1915. My email address is C/O my husband's stephenh@carbitool.com.au or my new address rosslynhamilton@global.com.au which I have been having some difficulty with, so post to stephen's if there is a problem.
