    1. [RENSHAW-L] Alger-Renshaw connection
    2. This information is for descendants of James and Araminta (Smith) Renshaw: Three daughters of Rev. Simeon Alger and his wife Mary or Mariette Amanda Howard married James and Araminta Renshaw descendants, as follows: Mariette A. Alger married Leonidas Renshaw about 1861, probably in Clayton County, Iowa. They had three children. Mariette died young, on 28 March 1866. She is buried in National Cemetery, Clayton Co., IA. As was so often the case, Leonidas Renshaw married Mariette's sister Angeline Alger a year later, on 14 March 1867 in Elkader, Clayton Co., IA. I have a photocopy of the entry of this marriage in the marriage register for Clayton County. Leonidas and Angeline had six children together, but the county histories attribute Mariette's children to Angeline also. Leonidas Renshaw had an older sister named Adaline Renshaw. On 24 December 1857 she married John Carty in Clayton Co., IA. They had three children: Merrill, Idella, and Charles. Adaline Renshaw Carty died about 1865 and her husband died a year later. The children were raised by members of the Renshaw and Everall families. (Vallonia Renshaw had married John Everall.) Idella Carty appears with her grandmother Martha (Evans) Renshaw on the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Clayton Co., IA. She married Willart Best Corlett in Clayton County. I am not sure yet whom Charles Carty married, but Merrill Carty married Luella Alger, a younger sister of Mariette and Angeline Alger. Merrill, by the way, was named for the husband of Amanda Renshaw, sister of Leonidas and of Adaline Renshaw. The husband's name was Merrill Augusta Knight. There is a query on one of the message boards at Ancestry.com asking about a family line from Iowa. One of the ancestors mentioned is Alger Carty. I have not yet been able to contact the person who posted the query, but I am fairly sure that Alger Carty was the son or grandson of Merrill Carty and Luella Alger, and therefore a Renshaw descendant.
