    1. [RENSHAW-L] Help with Copyrighted Material Please
    2. mylhasa
    3. Hi Everyone, Myself and Eleanor Gordon, another list member and Renshaw researcher, have just recently returned from a trip to Salt Lake City, Utah and the Family History Library. We had a wonderful week, exhausting week of research. Between the two of us we obtained many pieces of info on various RENSHAW lines. We both would like to share some of this material with the list members. However we think we may have a problem in doing so.The problem is a lot of the materials we copied were from copyrighted books. We have been trying to figure out how we can share our data online with you all, without violating copyright laws. For example can we post the extracted data, as long as we quote the source? Since we are not posting the whole book, but just a small piece of data from it. Is this copyright violation? Your help and suggestions on how to handle this would be greatly appreciated. Please send your response to the whole list, I believe some general discussion by all would be most helpful. I will be posting materials that I feel the copyright police won't come after me for. Hope they help someone. I will apologize up front if I should post something that is already available, however I just can't take the time to sort through all previous posted materials. Happy 2000 and great researching, may you all break down a wall this year! Gwen

    1. [RENSHAW-L] Renshaws - Portadown, Ireland???
    2. Maria Hurrell
    3. I am seeking information about the family of my great grandfather, Herbert Renshaw, who came to New Zealand in 1926 from Scotland and since then there has been no contact kept with any relations in Scotland or Ireland. Although we have no documented proof, he is believed to have been born in Portadown, Armagh, Ireland in 1885. His parents are listed on his death certificate here in New Zealand as Mark and Mary Jane Renshaw. As Herbert died before his wife we are hoping that this information has been given by her and is correct. He had one sister, Bella. His parents died when he was a boy and his aunt and uncle, David and Mary (nee McMillen) Renshaw brought him up. I don't know where he was brought up and the family has no idea what happened to Bella. David and Mary (nee McMillen) Renshaw had a family of four children; sons William (married Agnes Hunter, had a daughter called Chrissie), James (killed 25-3-1918 in France in 1st world war), David, and one daughter, Edith. This is all we know about this family. Herbert, my great-grandfather, ended up in Scotland. We don't know whether this was as a boy or as an adult. He married in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1910 to Elizabeth Speirs Lindsay and had three children born in Scotland; David, Elizabeth and Herbert. Another baby son was born, and not long after died, when they arrived in New Zealand. Herbert served in France during the 1st world war with the Scottish Rifles and we have a photo of him taken during this time on leave with "great-aunt Mary from Canada". We have no idea where this was taken or who great-aunt Mary was. She perhaps could have been the same aunt, Mary (nee McMillen) Renshaw who brought him up as a child but unless we can make contact with any living Renshaw relations to verify this I guess we'll never know. Any information on this family greatly appreciated. Maria Hurrell maria.ross@xtra.co.nz

    1. [RENSHAW-L] Thanksgiving
    2. mylhasa
    3. Have a happy Thanksgiving! "It was the first day of census, and all through the land, The pollster was ready, a book in his hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride. His book and his quills were tucked close by his side. The woman was tired, with lines on her face. She gave him some water; they sat at the table. She answered his questions the best she was able. He asked of her children; she had quite a few. The oldest was 20, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler, his cheeks round and red. His sister, she whispered was napping in bed. She mentioned each person who lived there with pride, as she felt the faint stirrings of one yet inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age; the marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children she nodded her head, and he saw her lips quiver for the ones who were dead. The place of birth she "never forgot." Was it Vermont, Boston, or Glasgow or not? They came from Scotland, on that she was quite clear, but she wasn't quite certain how long they had been here. So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun, and you can almost imagine his voice loud and clear. "May God bless you all for another ten years." Fast forward a moment, it's now you and me. As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down real slow, while we search for the entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day, that the entries they made would affect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel, and the searching that makes them so incredibly real? We can hear if we listen the world they impart, through the blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Happy Thanksgiving, remember just how lucky we are all to be here, and remember you too will be an ancestor one day. >From the Senior Citizen, Nov. issue 1999

    1. [RENSHAW-L] Joseph Renshaw & Elizabeth Wells
    2. mylhasa
    3. FOR COUSIN GARY & others! Page 13 from "Renshaw Reflections" before they received their inheritances. Frances Clark Renshaw (1) wf of Thomas, was, as we have said, dau of Robert, Sr., and Selina Smith Clark, of Deer Creek, Md. Francis had brothers; Robert, William, George and David Clark and sisters; Hannah Amos, Mary Johnson, Sarah Clark, Hatie Johnson, Elizabeth Clark and Selina Clark, all mentioned -in her father's WILL probated in 1757. The relationship of the Renshaw and Clark families was of long standing. John Renshaw, of Somerset County, had m. a Frances Clark, dau of a Robert Clark, a generation earlier. One-half of the land owned by Thomas (1) Renshaw was called 'Clark's Dunvary of Antrim' .. I trust that an enterprising researcher may 'Lind the original connection. d. Joseph Renshaw, fourth son of Thomas and Jane Renshaw, m. Elizabeth Wells, may have been named for the Joseph Ren- shaw named in the WILL of Mathew Mason, of Queen Anne Coun- ty Maryland. After all, he could have been the father of Thomas (1) and grfa of these four brothers. Who knows? Joseph and Elizabeth were m. 23 Oct 1742, St. George's Parish, Baltimore County, Md. His inheritance from his fa was that Dart of the plantation having the dwelling and all the improvements. It seems that the other sons had been given their portions of the land but Joseph, the youngest son, had remained, with his fam- ily, on the 'home' portion, helping his father and did not get complete possession as long as his mother lived. They were in Bush River e in Civic affairs. As late as 5 Feb 1777, Joseph, Sr. and all his sons took the Oath of Loyalty to the Crown but the sons later took up arms for the colonists, were officers and are among the few Renshaws who provided their descendants with the right to membership in the D.A.R.! Among those signing the Oath in 1777, with the Renshaws, were William and Joseph Wells, their mother's relatives and Robert Clark, Junior and Senior Renshaw family connections. Joseph, Sr. served as his brother, Abraham's, attorney when Abraham sold eighty acres of his land and had removed to North Carolina. Ch of Joseph and Elizabeth Wells Renshaw 1. Cassandra Renshaw b. 8 Sep 1763 d. before April, 1812. She never married; lived with sisters, Jane and Eliz- abeth, both unm, on land bequeathed them by their father in equal shares to all his children. To these three sisters Joseph left ten slaves; Cate and her four ch: Patt, Jane, Doll and Suck, Rachel and her four ch: Priss, Eliza and Been Cook, and all their posterity. Cassandra left a WILL in which she left her share in all this to her sister, Elizabeth, her father having died in 1809, three years earlier. Jane must have died after 1809 as she is not mentioned in her sister's WILL: "I give and bequeath to my sister, Elizabeth my half of all the stock, bedding, household furniture and farming utensils with all other property now owned by Elizabeth and myself". Joseph Renshaw, 13
