Hello Everyone, Today I checked USGENWEB to see if they had any updates for Maryland Census records and found all of these listed. These are from the indexes. There is more data if you wish to search at this site: ftp://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/md/ These are not images, so they are easy to search and read. I thought this may give some people an idea where to search since they give you the page numbers on which censuses they appear. They have not yet covered every census record. They have a project with volunteers transcribing them. They are trying to get them all online. In a message dated 7/28/01 8:56:46 AM Pacific Daylight Time, renshaww@hotmail.com writes: > I have a book called "The New World Book of Renshaws" and it shows James > Renshaw married Araminta Smith Jan. 29, 1802 in Bucks County, PA.. The book > is published by Halbert's Family Heritage. Thank you so much for the information! I shall take a look at the book when I go to the FHL. I looked "Halbert's" up online and found a few negative comments about the firm -- that they publish information without real data to back it up. Other people seem pleased with what they have found in the books, while still others say it isn't much more than a big telephone and address directory. Perhaps it is a source for leads but not for "sure"? Eleanor
The miracode index as given on Ancestry.com shows the Samuel Renshaw I mentioned in a previous email to the list as follows: Samuel Renshaw Age: 38 State: OH Color: W Enumeration District: 0059 Birth Place: ENG Visit: 0001 County: Lucas, Toledo Relation: Head of Household Other Residents: Relation Name Color Age Birth Place Wife Ida 39 ENG Daughter Gertrude 17 Michigan Daughter Dorothy 13 Michigan Son Samuel 08 Ohio Interesting that the above family had a daughter named Gertrude, which was the name of one of Miriam's sister. More for Ted: A man named Henry Renshaw appears on the 1900 census for Kent County, Michigan. His birth month and year appear almost as shown on your email -- the census has him born in England in September of 1841. His wife's name is Mary on the census and they have been married one year. She has had six children, so she was a widow when she married Henry. The only difficulty with this entry is that it shows Henry entering the U.S. in 1861. Possibly this should have been 1881? He was naturalized according to the entry. Turning to Samuel Renshaw, there are eleven men with this name on the 1900 census index. One of them, age 68, lived in Louisiana and was born in England. Another Samuel Renshaw lived in Ohio and was born in England in June of 1870. This man, married with a family, would seem to be a candidate for Ted's family except that he stated that he came to this country in 1892. Interestingly, in light of the Michigan marriage of Miriam Renshaw, this Samuel's younger children were born in Michigan. I think this is a definite possibility for Ted to explore. I wonder if the family did some "to and fro-ing", which was not so unusual as we might think. Of course, the above Samuel may be an unrelated man entirely. Eleanor
This is in response to the post by Ted Rozmaryn: According to the 1900 census for Kent County, Michigan, Miriam Bryant (who is called Marion on the census) arrived in this country in 1880. Since Ted states that the family appears on the 1881 British census, Miriam's memory must have been off by a year or so. I would look for her entry into the U.S. shortly after the census date. Hi, all. It's been a long while, but I thought I'd ask again. My great grandmother was Miriam Elizabeth Renshaw, b Sep 4, 1872, New Basford, Nottinghamshire, England. She was the daughter of Sarah Ann Mimmack, b May 28, 1842, Bolton upon Dearne, Yorkshire, England, and Henry Renshaw, b October 1841, Warsop, Nottinghamshire, England. She had two sisters, Sarah Ann, b 1866?, and Gertrude, b 1875?, and a brother, Samuel, b abt 1871. In 1881, according to the British Census, they lived in Plumstead, Kent, England. My next record has Miriam married to Lafayette Bryant about 1894 in, or near, Lowell, Kent County, Michigan, and I can find no record of the rest of her family. Does anyone have this Renshaw family? I'm trying to determine a couple of things. 1. What happened to the rest of her family? 2. When did Miriam come to the US? Thanks Ted Rozmaryn Anderson, CA
My oldest found RENSHAW ancestor is my gg grandfather William Thomas RENSHAW. Family legend has it that his brother Henry was a minister and William Thomas RENSHAW's son Charles was a minister also. All of these people were born in Maryland. Family legend has it that Henry RENSHAW lived in Baltimore, Maryland. I have found William Thomas and his children in the 1880 census for Wicomico County, Maryland. He married Martha Ann EDWARDS of Virginia. I have an inkling he met her during the Civil War in Virginia. The family all eventually settled in the Petersburg, Virginia area. There are probably 6 or 7 generations living is the same area of Peterburg, although most have moved to many places in the US. This is what I have for the first three generations. There seem to have been a great many Renshaw men who were men of the cloth. I thought it might be good tool for ourselves as well as others to create a list of them. If you have one in your line, Please consider posting any you have info on. So to kick it off here is one I found, who may or may not be one of mine: Rev. G.W. Renshaw: East Brandywine Baptist Church was organized February 21, 1843, with fifty-three members, a church building having been erected the previous year. This building was burned down in 1856, and rebuilt the same year.. The church was incorporated August 9, 1864, and the parsonage, which was purchased in 1870, is situated in Guthrieville. The pastors of this church have been Revs. Thomas S.Griffith, H. S. Haven, William J. Nice, John S. Christine, John M. Richards, George H. Mitchell, S. Livermore, Jesse B. Williams, B. H. Fish, T.G. Guessford, Maris Gibson, T.A. Lloyd, William Marrow, James M. Guthrie, A.M. McCurdy,Walter Mayo, F. W. Randal and G.W. Renshaw, the present pastor. The membership of the church is twenty-five, and the property is valued at $4,500. Source: Chester County & It's People- published 1898-author W.W. Thomson
Hi All, Eleanor 's suggestion to list our brick walls is a great idea. Please join in and post yours here in our list. Here is one of mine; I have four Renshaw men, I believe were brothers. All of which resided in Chester county, PA for a while. Born between 1794- 1807. The first two, James b. 1794 & Richard b. 1802 I can pretty much prove are related. These two resided & are buried Phoenixville. The third man William Renshaw b. 1804, He is said to have been born in Phoenixville married Martha Jenkins and moved to Luzerne county by 1840.( This man is Rusty Renshaw's, a prior list members ancestor. I have been unable to make contact with Rusty to see if we could prove the relationship.) The fourth was Joseph Renshaw b. 1807, residing in Phoenixville in the 1850 census, with a wife Christianna and 3 children, George age 15, William age 5, May or Mary age 1. By the 1860 census he has moved from Phoenixville and possibly to another state. Does anyone have a Joseph born around the same time with their birth place given as PA. Hi, All I saw a proposal on another list that one way to help each other is to share our worst "brick wall" genealogical problem. If it's ok with Gwen, our List Administrator, I thought we might do that on this list. My brick wall is James Renshaw, who supposedly married Aramina Smith in 1802 in Bucks Co., PA. I cannot find any supporting evidence for this "fact", nor can I find proof of the parentage of either of them. DAR records state that James was the son of Thomas Renshaw who was the son of John Renshaw, but these records are sometimes wrong. Does anyone have any actual proof of James' birth and marriage? Hi List, Thought that this might help someone so I'm passing it along. Gwen http://www.bakery.co.uk/datecalc.html
There are several Renshaws in the Minnesota Historical Society Death Index, online at http://people.mnhs.org/dci/ Eleanor
Ancestry.com has posted "Worldwide Masonic Directory, 1860". The directory includes two Renshaws: Renshaw, J.M. Occ. tanner & leather dealer Post 1811 Lodge Jefferson New Albany, IN Renshaw, George Occ. japanner Post 5595 Lodge John D. Willard 77 Devoe St. New York, NY
The Ellis Island Database shows quite a few Renshaws. Remember, U.S. citizens also went through Ellis Island if they vacationed in Europe and returned to New York. The processing of citizens was quite different from the treatment received by immigrants, of course. To access the database in a rapid fashion, do not use the EIDB portal. Instead, go to http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellis.html The gentleman who owns this website has created a much better search engine for searching the EIDB than the one that is on the EIDB site. You will be connected automatically to the EIDB site after the search engine has done its job. From there, all bets are off Due to the number of hits daily, the EIDB site is one of the flakiest I have found. Still, it's worth a try if you have relatives who came in through the Port of New York after 1892. To give one illustration, Mr. & Mrs. Chas. E. Renshaw and several daughters (enumerated individually), all U.S. citiizens, are shown coming in on The Pennsylvania. They traveled 1st class. Ages and other interesting facts are given on many of the manifests. For help in navigating the pages, email me at egrdn@aol.com Eleanor

I saw this on another list and thought it was so cute! Could apply to mothers too! GRANDMA AND THE FAMILY TREE: There's been a change in Grandma; we've noticed her of late, She's always reading history or jotting down some date. She's tracking back the family; we'll all have pedigrees. Oh, Grandma's got a hobby; she's climbing Family Trees. Poor Grandpa does the cooking now, or so he states, That worst of all, he has to wash the cups and dinner plates. Grandma can't be bothered; she's busy as a bee Compiling genealogy -- for the Family Tree. She has no time to baby-sit; the curtains are a fright, No buttons left on Granddad's shirt, the flowerbed's a sight. She's given up her club work, the serials on TV, The only thing she does nowadays is climb the Family Tree. She goes down to the court house and studies ancient lore, We know more about our forebears than we ever knew before. The books are old and dusty; they make poor Grandma sneeze, A minor irritation when you're climbing Family Trees. The mail is all for Grandma, it comes from near and far, Last week she got the proof she needs to join the DAR. A worth while avocation, to that we all agree, A monumental project, to climb the Family Tree. Now some folks came from Scotland and some from Galway Bay, Some were French as pastry, some German, all the way. Some went on west to stake their claim, some stayed near by the sea, Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree. She wanders through the graveyard in search of date or name, The rich, the poor, the in-between, all sleeping there the same. She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees. There were pioneers and patriots mixed in our kith and kin Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin. But none more staunch than Grandma, whose eyes light up with glee Each time she finds a missing branch for the Family Tree. Their skills were wide and varied, from carpenter to cook And one (Alas!) the record shows was hopelessly a crook. Blacksmith, weaver, farmer, judge, some tutored for a fee, Long lost in time, now all recorded on the Family Tree. To some it's just a hobby; to Grandma it's much more, She knows the joys and heartaches of those who went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, and they wept, and now lay forever still, But they will not, be forgotten as long, as Grandma climbs the family tree. Author; Unknown.
