My Great Grandmother was Mariam Renshaw, daughter of Henry Renshaw and Sarah Ann Mimmack. She was born in New Basford, Nottinghamshire, England, on Sep 4, 1872. She came to the US sometime between 1880 and 1890, and married Lafayette Bryant, of Lowell, Kent County, Michigan, around 1893. In 1900, they were still living in Lowell, Michigan. Mariam had two sisters, Sarah Ann and Gertrude, and one brother, Samuel., b June, 1870. Samuel married Ida ? about 1889 and had a daughter, Ada, in England in 1890. By 1894, they moved to Michigan, where Gertrude and Dorothy were born. By 1900, the Samuel and his family were living in Toledo, Ohio. He had a son, Samuel, born about 1902. Does anyone have links to this family? I'm looking for the following information: I think maybe Henry and Sarah Ann may have immigrated to the US, but I can find no records indicating so. I don't know exactly when Mariam came to the US, nor do I know when Samuel came. What ever happened to Mariam and Samuel's sisters, Sarah Ann and Gertrude? Who are Samuel's descendents? Gwen mentioned Rinshaw as an alternative spelling to Renshaw a couple of weeks ago. While all present-day Rinshaws may not be Renshaws, I think Gwen made a good point: in older records many of the "Rinshaws" were really Renshaws. Ancestry.com has several Rinshaw entries, including a James Rinshaw in 1857 in Phoenixville. I am quite sure he was a Renshaw. My goodness you certainly are finding some strange spellings!! Or you could say the transcriber or census taker did a lousy job. Ancestry bumped me off twice today when I was trying to access the census images. The one page for a William Renshaw , Phila. 1820 Dock ward which was supposed to be linked to the page he was to be on , He wasn't.I was rather frustrated with ancestry as I wanted that data. Is Elisha a man or women? Think you maybe right about the Middle initial being put in front of the surname as part of the surname. But kinda of wonder if it was a male what the B. would have stood for. Can't think of two many male names that started with b, as I think Bill or Bob nick names probably weren't used in that time frame. Probably a relatives surname. Jack is home this evening so going to spend the time with him at least till he goes to bed. Don't know how long I myself will be awake since I have been up since 4 :30 am. I think my doctor is the only one around who starts office hours at that time. Wants me to see another Dr. end of the month and re-did some blood work for liver function seems his lab tech misunderstood what he ordered the last time. A recent Quick Tip on Ancestry.com mentioned that occasionally a middle initial is combined with a surname when indexes are created. An example would be that W. F. Renshaw on a census might be indexed as W. Frenshaw. I found the following: Halifax District, Nova Scotia Census, 1901: Halifax City Frenshaw, W. Hi Sandy, Hi Have 2 marriage records for a William Renshaw which read: Renshaw, William, of lower Dublin, Philadelphia County, and Mary Tomlinson daughter of Henry Tomlinson of Bristol Twp. Bucks county at I. Hicks Office, 5th Feb 1818. Source 1. The Pennsylvania Magazine of History & Biography Vo. XXIX published 1905. Source 2.-Bucks County newspaper Marriage Notices 1804-1834. Neither one has an initial F. associated with the given name of William. Is this the Williams whose parents you are looking for? The William Renshaw from London, I posted immigrated to Phila. in 1804 he does not have a son named William b 1794. However there was a another LARGE family of RENSHAW"s living in Philadelphia from the early 1700's, I believe your William is probably a descendant of this line. In 1800 There are two Renshaw men who are your most likely candidates, Thomas and James. The early 1700's Renshaw's and Tomlinson's were of the Quaker faith. I have been tracking these Renshaw's for almost 11 years and have a lot of data. Perhaps you have some other info on your William which might help me to help you.
