    1. [Renshaw] Report on DNA Testing
    2. We have six Renshaw candidates signed up for DNA testing. One kit has already been returned. The volunteers represent the following Renshaw lines: Renshaws of Henderson Co., TN Rencher descendants of Abraham Renshaw Chester Co., PA George Renshaw descendants William T. Renshaw of Wicomico Co., MD descendants One known and one probable descendant of James and Araminta Renshaw (We are almost positive the two test-takers are related but would like to prove it.) This is an excellent start. We need a volunteer from the "Harford Co., MD to Rowan Co., NC" Renshaws and also one from John Grant Rencher's Irish line. What other Renshaw groups are in the U.S.? We would like to interest our English and Australian Renshaws in the testing as well. For all of you, there is a little seed money left of the sum that was anonymously donated to assist with the cost of the testing. Contact Eleanor, egrdn@aol.com if you are interested in being part of the Renshaw Surname DNA Project.

After his death, his wife (Rachel nee Wadkins) took-over postmaster duties. Mail at that time was sent by train. If the train carried mail for Renshaw, it would stop, but if it did not, it wasn't required to do so. Several years before her death at age 101 in 1991, my grandmother (Myrtle Florence married: Burgess), , would tell how as a young girl she was assigned to toss the mail sacks into the train as it passed. She would laugh at how many good RENSHAW citizens had their mail delivered late during her first few tries, as it took quite a few trains passing before she could manage to find the target. Laura

    1. [Renshaw] Renshaw Project -- Update
    2. There are a few partial and full "scholarships" still available for the Renshaw DNA project for those who would like to join the project but are not financially comfortable doing so. The testing is non-invasive, consisting of brushing the inside of the cheek with a brush and mailing the results to the testing lab in the kit provided. Men bearing the Renshaw name who are direct descendants of an immigrant Renshaw or who live in England or Ireland are eligible for the test. We hope to prove relationship among some of the various Renshaw lines. If you would like to join the project or have a question, email me: Eleanor Gordon egrdn@aol.com

    1. [Renshaw] Renshaw DNA
    2. I have been reading about DNA genealogical testing and that it is a great way for direct male descendants to confirm or disprove relationship among various families which share a surname. Representatives of two Renshaw families have agreed to submit their samples for testing. Taking a sample consists of swabbing with a soft brush in the mouth on the inside of the cheek. People who take the test receive a kit from the testing company with instructions for taking the sample. Are any members of this list or male spouses interested in testing for relationship to other families? The information about the company we are using can be found at http://www.familytreedna.com If six or more males are tested the company will set up a surname project for us. There is a cost involved for testing, as indicated on the website. Email me if you would like to discuss it further, please. Rootsweb rules proscribe discussion of costs and commercial sites on list. 2. Hi, Tina My mind must have slipped a gear. Dock Ward is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If you look at this 1820 census page on Ancestry, be aware that they take you to the four-page set after the correct one. Go back one image to find William Renshaw on Image 1, second entry. Thanks for checking! Eleanor

    1. [Renshaw] Auction Items
    2. Every now and then I check Ebay to see if anything is being auctioned for one of my surnames. I put one of the surnames in the Basic Search Box, put a check mark "in title and descriptions" box, and click on Search. I just tried Renshaw and found quite a mixture of items, including some which are genealogy-related. One of the items is a Bible which contains family information and news clippings. The seller has listed some of the family names in the BIble and the areas the people lived in. Renshaw is one of the names..... There are other items in the auction which might be useful to Renshaw researchers as well. Note that I have no financial interest in any of the above; this is just a reminder to check the auction sites once in a while for family research.

    3. Hi All, I am posting several paragraphs from a 9 page article on a Harry N. Renshaw, from the American Rifle Magazine,That a lady so generously sent to me. Harry Renshaw is in the first row of the photo of the Rifle team, he appears to be in his late 20's to early 30's. According to the article Harry N. Renshaw is from Washington DC. The picture for a photocopy from a magazine is excellent. The event lasted two days in Philadelphia, the team then went to New York, and then by ship to England to a Camp Bisley, Surrey England, said to be 12 miles from London,(in1931). If anyone can connect with this man would you please post back to the list. Also anyone who wishes the rest of article, I will be happy to provide via snail mail for expenses. Requests will be taken via this site. Hope he belongs to some one in the list. Gwen Renshaw Maurer, list administrator The American Rifleman September 1931 THE First American Shoulder-to-Shoulder International SmallBore Rifle Team had its initial assembly at Hotel Majestic, Philadelphia, on the afternoon of Sunday, June 20. This was to allow the making of a machine-rest test at Frankford Arsenal to determine which make of ammunition was best suited to each rifle. The Match was to be between teams of ten men on each side, so our squad included twelve shooting members (to allow for two alternates) and three officials. The team is well shown in the picture at the bottom of this page, which was taken in camp at Bisley the day before the match. Reading from left to right, we have in the front row kneeling on the ground: R. H. McGarity, Washington, D. C., Team Adjutant, and Ensign H. N. Renshaw, U. S. Coast Guard, Team Coach. Second row, sitting: Gail Evans, Steubenville Ohio; Thurman Randle, Fort Worth, Tex.; Gairie M. Upshaw, Pasadena, Calif.; Maj. J. S. Hatcher, U. S. Army, Team Captain; Fabian J. Paffe, St. Augustine Fla.; George B. Sheldon, Poughkeepsie, N. Y.; Henry J. Adams, Jr., La Mesa, Calif.; Back row, standing: Charles H. Johnson,* Philadelphia, Pa.; George H Sittler, Germansville, Pa.; P. F. Johansen, Joliet, Ill.; H. H. Jacobs, Dayton, Ohio; Lawrence A. Wilkens, Norwood, Ohio; Vere F. Hamer, Primghar, Iowa; Dr. Emmet O. Swanson, Minneapolis, Minn. (* Mr. Johnson was at Bisley at his own expense and offered his services as assistant coach, in which capacity he did valuable work.) Each team member brought his own gun and the N. R. A. provided ammunition of each of the five makes. The ammunition was specially selected at the factory for accuracy and was of standard velocity, that is, it was not of the high-speed type. Adams had a Ballard-Hubalek; Jacobs, a Peterson-Ballard, and Upshaw had a B S. A. with Hubalek barrel. All the rest of the rifles were heavy-barrel Winchesters. For the test the guns were removed from the stocks and fired in a Frankford Arsenal 6-point rest at 100 yards, S targets of 10 shots with each brand of ammunition. Exceptionally fine results were obtained with the Hubalek and Peterson rifles with their nearly cylindrical, heavy barrels, but none of the Winchesters gave very good results in this rest and some of the results were nothing short of poor. The indifferent groups obtained with the Winchesters caused much disappointment to their owners and resulted in an unfortunate destruction of the confidence which the men had previously had in their guns. As a result of these poor groups, we decided to have the owners check some of them by offshoulder shooting on the outdoor range. In spite of bad weather conditions the offshoulder firing in every case gave far better groups than those obtained with the machine gun rest.

    3. Hi Folks , While going through some of my various files I came across this old newspaper inquiry made many years ago. It was from a clipping file in Suto Library in Daley City, CA. The person who posted the query's name wasn't listed. But thought something in this article might be helpful to someone. Gwen Joseph Renshaw Brown Query dated 11/3/ 1930 Joesph Renshaw Brown, was born in Harford Co., MD Jan 6, 1805, was son of Samuel Brown and Emily Renshaw. Samuel was a circuit rider. Emily died soon after the birth of Joseph and is buried in a county cemetery at a small place called Black Hasse, not far from Baltimore the place contained a blacksmith shop, store and an inn. I find in the census of 1790 three by the name of Renshaw from Harford, Co., viz., John Joseph and Phillip. No doubt Emily belonged to one of these parties. Wanted the ancestry of Emily and some history of the Renshaw family. Joesph, her son came to Fort Snelling, Minn. When a small boy and became a prominent worker in the early settlement in Minnesota.
