    1. [Renshaw] Origin of Name Renshaw
    2. This is from "A DIctionary of English and Welsh Surnames" by Charles Bardsley, printed in 1901, available on Ancestry.com. The following is all quoted from the dictionary until you reach the words "Note from Eleanor". Renshaw.-- Local 'of Ravenshaw,' some local but, I fear, lost spot in East Cheshire. The surname has ramified very strongly. The suffix is found alike as -shall and -shaw; cf. Henshall and Henshaw, Shallcross and Shawcross, in the same district. Ravenshaw means the shaw or wood belonging to Raven, an early personal name of much popularity (v. Rawnsley and Raven, and cf. Ravenscroft, a surname found in East Cheshire also). The full form ran alongside the abbreviated for a time. John Ravenshaw, of Walkerton, 1673: Wills at Chester (1660-80), p. 220. The first step towards the modern form was Rainshaw (cf. Rainow, formerly Ravenowe, a township in the parish of Priestbury). 1570 Bapt. -- Alice Raynshawe: Prestbury Ch. (Cheshire), p. 33. Sir Ralph Raynshae, vicar of Potte, 1548; East Cheshire, ii. 330. This same Ralph was buried at Presbury: 1561. Buried -- Sir Rauffe Renshae, preste: Prestbury Ch. (Cheshire), p. 6. Thus in two entries concerning the same individual we see the last stage practically reached. John Rainshaw, of Sale, 1647: Wills at Chester (1621-50), p. 180. John Renshaw, yeoman, of Mobberley, 1661: ibid. (1660-80), p. 221. John Renshall, of Sale, 1679: ibid. Ralph Renshall, of Mobberley, 1680: ibid. Richard Renshaw, of Sale, 1680: ibid. London, 10; Manchester, 28; MDB. (Cheshire), 4; Philadelphia, 14. Note from Eleanor: I assume the last line is the distribution of the name as found by the author, but the website does not state this. Other names in the dictionary which Mr. Bardsley sees as being derived from Raven are Ravenshear, Ramshire, Ravenswar, and Ramshaw. There is no mention of Rencher in the indexing, which seems curious, although there is an entry for Wrench. The author sees Olorenshaw as a different name from Renshaw, although it also occured in Prestbury where in at least one instance it was transcribed as Owlrenshaw and another time as Oulrenshawe. I do not believe the above derivations are universally accepted, but they are interesting. Eleanor

From the 1930 Census: Gene K Renshaw, 3 months (census was taken 1 Apr so the age fits), born OK, father (Gene age 28) born OK, mother (Pauline age 18) born KS. On same page in different household are John, age 63, born IA, father born USA, mother born USA (oh how incredibly helpful <g>) and Jennie F, age 63, born OH, father born OH, mother born IN. There is no Keith listed in any state in the 1930 Census, so I searched on just the initial K and this is the only match returned that was remotely feasible. Again, no proof, but maybe someone recognizes this family and knows more?

    2. In my files I have several photocopied pages with information about Renshaws from "St. George's Parish Registers 1689-1793" by Bll and Martha Reamy. St. George's parish was in Baltimore County; I am not sure if it was in the part which later became Harford County. They also visited Mrs. Renshaw's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Mobberly, and Jack." Does anyone know which Renshaw line the above family fits into? 1. [Renshaw] DNA Success Story
    2. The Renshaw Y-DNA Project is very pleased to announce that several previously-unlinked Renshaw lines are related! The DNA testing shows that we are certainly related and that we have a "fairly likely" certainty of sharing a common ancestor within the last fourteen generations, which is a maximum of 300 to 400 years and which may be much less. Further testing will probably help to pinpoint the generation of the most recent common ancestor more closely. Renshaw volunteers whose DNA matches include men from two Pennsylvania lines; two MD lines, one of which went to NC; a TN line; and an IL line. The researchers in these lines have been enthusiastically comparing notes and making charts, looking for points where the various Renshaw families might have intersected. Most of us are very excited to meet new Renshaw cousins and the emails have been flying. Laura Cordingley has volunteered to create a RenshawDNA website and we are overwhelming her with suggestions of what to put on the site. Brick walls, information about oldest known ancestors, naming patterns, family migration, and county boundary line changes are among the many suggestions about what should appear on the site. Laura, who has plenty of ideas of her own for the site as well, is going to start work on it next week. If you are interested in being part of the DNA project, contact Eleanor Gordon egrdn@aol.com or Pat LaBrot plabrot@swbell.net We are using Family Tree DNA to handle the testing. Their website is www.FTDNA.com The company offers a free video for download or by mail which explains the process. A donor has given us $300 to help defray testing expenses for volunteers who are financially unable to pay all or part of the cost of their tests. The donation will help us pay for 50% of six tests or 100% of three tests. Contact Pat or Eleanor at the emails above for more information.

    3. Hi everyone, I thought I should give you the news on the DNA test that my cousin Joe Renshaw took. First of all, he was really pleased to have been asked to do it. His main interest is in our American Indian heritage, so he jumped at the opportunity. My family has always known we were Indian, but have not been able to document it. I can't read the results so I have no idea what the report means. I keep saying it's Greek to me, and I mean it. It's going to take a while for all this DNA reading to penetrate this brain. We were fortunate in that Joe matched with 3 Renshaws, who submitted samples also. We are now exchanging information with them, but we still do not see a connection. One of the them sent me her data to all of us, and I see her Renshaw data goes back to the Harford County, MD and to Rowan, NC. So this means Joe's and my family has probably been around for a very long time in this country. I learned last night that the ancestor in this Harford County, MD and Rowan, NC family was born in England was born there about 1655. The first Renshaw born in this country was born about 1687. Although I do not yet have a link to the family, it's nice to meet cousins I did not know were my relatives. I guess some of them are even on this mail list. Has anyone else received the results of their tests? Please let us know what your have learned. How do you feel about the results? I can say I'm glad Joe was willing to do this. My research is an intense thing with me. I can't stand now to have an answer. I keep searching and searching until I find them, but sometimes I don't think I will ever find the next generation. This gives me renewed hope. Tina Ellis

    1. [Renshaw] Renshaw DNA Project News
    2. The Renshaw Surname DNA Project has attracted quite a bit of interest. So far we have signed up eight volunteers from various Renshaw lines and other Renshaws have inquired about the project. The company has mailed a kit to each volunteer via U.S. Mail; the kits are taking about a week to arrive. One volunteer has completed the DNA test and returned his kit. We should receive lab results for him within a month's time, which will be exciting, especially when we receive other results to compare it with. Note that personal privacy will be respected; we shall be comparing volunteers' samples only with respect to the Renshaw lines they represent. We shall not, for instance, state that John Renshaw's DNA matches Bob Renshaw's DNA. Instead we shall say that the volunteer from the James and Araminta Renshaw line matches that of the volunteer from the Harford County Renshaw line (I wish.) Patricia LaBrot has agreed to co-administer the DNA project with me. Thank you, Pat! I shall be traveling across country this autumn and Pat will be the point person while I am away as well as helping me field questions now. We do not as yet have any Renshaws signed up for the project from other countries although we would like to have some English, Irish, Australian, and New Zealand volunteers..... If you have any questions about the testing or wish to inquire about scholarships, email us as follows: Eleanor Gordon egrdn@aol.com Patricia LaBrot plabrot@swbell.net A big "thank you" again to our Renshaw volunteers!
