Hi Folks, This was just posted to other list I belong to. This is a type of record I was not aware of. Perhaps some of our gentlemen researchers maybe, but guessing most of us ladies aren't. Could be worth looking into:- Gwen here is the post: I found the following information regarding WW bonus applications (unfortunately I didn't save the source information; my apologies) In some states (PA for one) a Bonus was granted to World War I and World War II veterans returning to their home state. PA [and other states as well] has these applications for bonuses at their State Archives. Other states may have similar records. The service number is also shown on these State Bonus Applications [However, Bonuses were paid by many jurisdictions. Veterans were usually required to furnish a copy of separation papers but not always. The biggest problem here is that a great many veterans never applied.] The VA may or may not have a service number because it isn't needed. The VA assign their own file numbers. I sent a request to the Pennsylvania State Archives for my g-father's W.W.I Bonus Application. Although the site only references W.W.II, I received a copy of his application. Mail requests require a $10 fee. <<http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/>http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/> Select Pennsylvania State Archives scroll down to bottom of screen select All Mail Inquires... Information I received on the application follows. W.W.I veterans were to receive their bonuses 17 years after the war; briefly said, protested and finally marched on Washington during the Depression, were finally granted their bonuses in 1934. Text missing due to page being folded ...SATION APPLICATION Number 250728 State of Nebraska Lancaster County Stamped: CLAIM APPROVED Commonwealth of Pennsylvania County of Philadelphia Dates as per Card Record from 4/6/17 to 3/5/19 being duly sworn, deposes and says: I am the veteran named in the following descriptive information; I served in the military or naval forces of the United States from March 1915 to March 1919; I claim veteran's compensation as authorized by Act No. 53, approved January 5, 1934; I was a resident of Pennsylvania at time of entry into service; I make this claim with full knowledge of the penalty for making a false statement relative to a material fact concerning this claim and the answers to the following questions and descriptive information are true: Maloney, Ambrose Patrick Joseph USN White Legal residence at entry into service: 101 W Seymore St. Gtn. Listmembers, just want you to know how grateful I am to all of you and your postings. I have been working on this line for 20 yrs with very little success. Since Gwen and all of you have been helping me I now have some civil records that I could never find before. I know technology has improved, and that is surely a help, but the kindness of the list members is what makes it all worthwhile in the end. Thanks to you all, Betty A. Renshaw Roach

This is my first posting here - have communicated to some of you privately before. William Renshaw, who married Nancy Leach in 1793 in Rowan, NC, is my gggg grandfather, via James, William, James, Holly, Martha Renshaw Jefferson, and me (Tom Jefferson). Listed below is a partial list of information you all probably already have. I have noticed a couple of you are stumped (as am I) on who is William's father. Based on other data available, here's what I think - tell me what you think. It looks to me like Abraham Renshaw (b. 1713 in Harford), son of Thomas (b. 1687 in Somerset), ultimately moved to Rowan County and had Thomas (b. 1739), John (b. 1741), Joseph (b. 1744), Abraham (b. 1746), Isaac (b. 1748), Elijah (b. 1753) and Ann (b. 1755). Im the 1790 census, listed elsewhere in these archives, for Rowan County, NC, are listed Abraham, Elijah, Joseph, Thomas, and William. William Renshaw was born 1769 (I can't remember the source of this date), so he would be 21 in 1790. This leaves him out as being a son of Abraham (son of Abraham). He doesn't seem to be Elijah's progeny (see elsewhere in archives). That leaves William being son of Joseph or Thomas. Does anyone else have any detail here? Is there something glaringly wrong with this way of thinking (other than that records can be incomplete). Note that there was another William (b. 1741, d. 1770 in Rowan), who was a son of Thomas (b. 1715-1720, son of Thomas (b. 1687), but he was dead by the 1790 census. I would appreciate hearing from any of you interested in this portion of the line. Hello Listmembers, For those of you researchers that are interested in seeing if there is any information on the LDS CDs, please let me know. I have these available for lookups: Vital Records Index - British Isles Vital REcords Index - North America Australian Vital Records Index They contain birth, christenings and marriages. You do not need to limit your requests to the RENSHAW surname. I will be happy to help you with any of your ancestors that may be brickwalls for you. I am unable to get into my Hotmail mailbox again this morning for some reason. I have had to subscribe again using this address. Hope there's no confusion over this. I had the some problem using Hotmail last night, but was able to get into it later in the evening. Is anyone else having this problem? Tina Ellis
Hello Everyone: When you joined the list you received a Generic welcome message. It has taken me some time to learn the "TECHIE" things to maintain this list. I now feel I am getting the hang of it and it was time to state the purpose and some general guidelines for our list. I am posting the new Welcome message that all new subscribers will receive. So that everyone will be in formed at one time. This also will ensure that all members, both NEW & OLD be aware of what I as list owner / administrator feel our guidelines should be. I apologize for the length of this message and overburdening your mailboxes. Please take the few minutes to read the New Welcome message below and we will all benefit: Thank you, Gwen Renshaw Maurer %*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* WELCOME *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*% WELCOME to the RENSHAW Family Discussion List. This is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in Genealogy or History related to the RENSHAW family, or any other related spelling. My name is Gwen Renshaw Maurer I Live in Salida, CA and I'm the owner of this list. I'm responsible for keeping it running as smoothly as possible and setting some rules and guidelines. *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* GENERAL %*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*% * Please keep this message. I recommend that you keep a copy on file in your computer as well as a printed paper copy that you can find easily. * Read this message. Yes, I realize it is long but there is a lot of important information here. * You may see some new terms and phrases here along with exacting instructions about sending commands etc. You will get used to it soon enough -- don't let it bother you. In order to make things work well you must follow instructions - to the letter. If you leave something out of a command or put something extra in, it won't work. This is because of the way computer programs work. * Remember these addresses: * If you need help, contact ME. My address is mylhasa@softcom.net * To post a message to this list, i.e. Genealogical data, queries, etc. (stuff you want other members to read) send it to: RENSHAW-l@rootsweb.com * To subscribe or unsubscribe send a message to: RENSHAW-l-request@rootsweb.com or RENSHAW-d-request@rootsweb.com (for digest mode) *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* RULES *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*% *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* * This list is for the discussion of Genealogy and History, primarily regarding RENSHAW and related families. If you have a file you would like to share with the members, announce what you have to offer, then send the file only to those who request it, via private email. Posting of this type tends to overload list members mailboxes.* Small gedcom files are encouraged, but please to three (3) generations(send in as a message, NOT as a file attachment) as long as the resulting message is no larger than 61440 bytes maximum. * Try to keep quoting to a minimum. "Quoting" is repeating text of the message you are replying to. Some quoting is necessary to remind other readers what the thread is about but do try to use good judgment. Quoting the previous writer's signature block or surname list is totally unnecessary. * Surname lists are okay but please try to limit them to say, half a dozen names. Any more than that and many people just won't read them. Try keeping several small lists and rotate them with each succeeding message. *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* SUBSCRIPTIONS *%*%*%*%*%*%* *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* * Subscription commands go to RENSHAW-l-request@rootsweb.com -or- RENSHAW-d-request@rootsweb.com I repeat, to subscribe or to unsubscribe send an email to RENSHAW-l-request@rootsweb.com -or- RENSHAW-d-request@rootsweb.com and put subscribe (and nothing else) or unsubscribe (and nothing else) in the body of the message. Again, all subscription commands go to RENSHAW-l-request@rootsweb.com -or- RENSHAW-d-request@rootsweb.com not to the list! You can use CAPS or lowercase, it doesn't matter. *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* POSTING MESSAGES %*%*%*%*%*%*%**%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*% * To post a message (query, reply or other RENSHAW data) to the list, send it to RENSHAW-l@rootsweb.com It helps to remember to put something in the "subject line". *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* TIPS %*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*% *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* * Accuracy is important and sources are vital. Ancestor lists are worthless if the information is wrong. * All information need not be accompanied by source citations, but I do recommend strongly that posts either include sources or a note stating that they are available on request. * If information is speculation then label it as such until it is proven or commonly accepted as fact. * When posting your query try to give as much information as you know, i.e. dates and places of all vital events if known, along with enough other family members so that the reader can positively identify if they are researching the same family. "Anyone out there researching RENSHAW'S?" just doesn't cut it. * When replying to the list (this also can apply to private replies) try to quote some portions of the previous message so that other readers are reminded what the "thread" is about. Make it clear what is quoted material and what you are adding. Most mail readers take care of this for you by inserting greater-than signs "" at the beginning of each quoted line or possibly double brackets "<<" before and "" after the quoted piece. Use standard Windows procedures to "cut" unnecessary material. * Post your query frequently, perhaps once a month, if you have not yet found your ancestor. New people are joining the list all the time and they may have the info you need. * Please send RENSHAW replies to the list, not just to the original poster. Other members may benefit from the data that you provide. *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* FURTHER INFORMATION %*%*%*%*%* *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* See the following URL'S for information on Genealogy lists: http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* ABOUT *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* *%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%*%* RootsWeb was founded in 1996 by Dr. Brian Leverich and Karen Isaacson. Nancy, I realize you are new to the list. So may or may not be aware that all posts to the list, are archived at rootsweb. You may retrieve all of the past posts to this list at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl There you will find the census's that I have already posted to the list. The message I posted to Tina, was in response to a direct request from Tina for a specific look up. I chose to answer her request via the list. So that what data, I had obtained for her specifically. Would be shared with the list. Any additional data, I may have obtained, of general interest, will be posted & shared with the list. When I have time to type it up. This sometimes takes hours of work at the computer. Time that must be shared with my part time job and family responsibilities. Speaking of sharing , recently many members posted their lineage in various formats. Why not add your own , so that all may view it , perhaps some one will be able to provide you with a connection. Thank you for your understanding, Gwen

Florence Renshaw Bowden, residence 30 Main Street, Keyser, WV ** Here is a tie in for Lewis Renshaw & Mary Sommers: per the 1860 Philadelphia, PA census, this nicely identifies Mary's mother and places of birth. Which in turn is a good example of how families in these three states moved back & forth between these states. Phila., PA 1860 census Sommers, Rachel, age 65, real estate value $10,000, personal v. $600, birthplace (bp.) DE Renshaw, Louis*, a. 45 -occ. Clerk- bp. PA Renshaw, Mary, a. 43, bp. The commonwealth of Virginia to the coroner of Monongalia county, greeting: You are herby commanded that of the goods and chattels of James Renshaw late in your bailiwick, you cause to be made the sum of 2 dollars and 93 cents which George Smith lately in our county court of Monongalia hath recovered against him for his costs by him about his defence in a certain appeal lately prosecuted by the said James against the said George whereof the said James Renshaw is convicted as appears to us of record; and that you have the same before the Justices of our county court at the courthouse thereof on the second Monday in Sept next to render to the said James Renshaw the costs aforesaid, and have then there this writ. Witness Nimrod Evans, Clerk of our said Court, at the Court house aforesaid, the 5 day of August 1814 and 39th[?] year of the commonwealth. [Note: James and his wife, Araminta Smith Renshaw, named their first son George S. Renshaw. Since there are no known ancestors named George in James' line, it is quite possible that Araminta's father was named George Smith. The question is, did James and his father-in-law sue each other some 12 or 13 years after the marriage between James and Araminta, or is this another George Smith?..... Court costs, by the way, were 63 cents, noted on an addendum.]

Hi, all We have had many interesting messages with a great deal of Renshaw information posted to the list. I am sure we are all appreciative of the time and energy contributors have expended in sharing their data and sources. A few messages, unfortunately, have sounded a bit "snippy". This is very discouraging to the people who are posting. My suggestion is, if we want to criticize a person's post, or ask for clarification, or ask the individual to expand on the post, that we do so off list. If the recipient of the off-list message thinks the suggestion is a good one, he or she can post (to the whole list) an appropriate message incorporating the suggestion and a response. Sometimes we get so focused on our research, we forget that there is a human being with feelings involved at the other end of the message we are about to send..... Eleanor
Gwen, Please post your findings from your census search for others to view. This would help everyone in their search. Thanks!! Nancy
