I am seeking descendants of Hosea Renshaw & Wife Nancy. Although I am not a Renshaw descendant, I believe that Nancy may have been a McAdams & possibly a sister of my g-g Grandfather, Wm. S. McAdams. The Hosea Renshaw family is found in Washington County, Tennessee. The 1850 census lists Hosea, 49; Nancy, 44; Amanda, 19; Saraphina, 19; Elizabeth, 16; Julia, 12; Robert, 13; Jane, 10; John, 7; W., 5; Cath. R., 1. Also in the household is Mary McAdams, aged 74. I believe Mary to be Mary SLAUGHTER McAdams, my ancestor. Mary McAdams made application in 1853 for bounty land based on the service of her late husband, Robert in the War of 1812. In this application she mentioned data from a family bible. If she was living with the Renshaw's when she died, I'm hoping that bible might exist among descendants. One of Hosea & Nancy's sons, Robert, I have found to have been named Robert McAdams Renshaw. He went to Montana in the 1860s and became a gold miner there. He later moved to California where he died. The following information is found in his death certificate: California Death Certificate for Robert McAdams Renshaw. Lived at 269 N. Ivy St., Monrovia, Los Angeles County, CA. at time of death. Born Aug 1, 1836 in TN., died Feb 26, 1917, 80 yrs, 6 mo., 25 da. Was a retired miner. Lists fathers name as James Renshaw, birthplace unknown, mother's name as McAdams, birthplace unknown. Informant was Robert R. Renshaw of Atwater, CA. Dr. was C.B. Caldwell, cause of death was Cerebral Thrombosis. Buried Feb. 28 in Inglewood Cemetery, L.A. Renaken Co. of Monrovia was undertaker. Robert M. Renshaw left a son, Robert R. He is found in the California death index: California Death Index, 1940-49; listing for Robert R. Renshaw. Died 15 June 1949 in Los Angeles County, CA. Social Security # 551-10-5485. Spouse's initials: I.R. Any help would be appreciated. Would any California resident know how I might find a death certificate or obit that might list descendants of this Robert R.? Hope these names might ring a bell with some one. Hi everyone, Here is a copy of the results of a commercial surname research request, obtained by one of my cousins. She didn't say who she had purchase it from, however thought you all might enjoy. Now I myself can document Renshaw's as early as 1620's in the USA. - Gwen The Ancient History of the Distinguished Surname Renshaw The- most- ancient -surname of Renshaw makes an impressive claim to being one of the oldest Anglo / Saxon surnames on record. The history of -the name is closely woven into the intricate tapestry of the ancient chronicles of England. Professional -researchers have carefully scrutinized such ancient manuscripts as the Doomsday Book (1086), the Ragman Rolls, (1291-1296), the Curia Regis Rolls, The Pipe Rolls the Hearth Rolls, parish registers, baptism's, tax records and, other ancient documents and found the first record of the name Renshaw in Lancashire, where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early - Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects. Many different spellings were encountered in the research of your surname. Although your name, Renshaw, occurred in manuscripts and documents, from time to time the surname was also officially spelled Renshaw, Olerenshaw, and these variations in spelling frequently occurred, even between father & son. Scribes and church officials, often traveling great distances, even from other countries, frequently spelt the names they were recording as they heard it. As a result the same person could find different spellings of the name recorded on birth, baptismal, marriage and death certificates as well as the other numerous records such as tax and census records. The Saxon race gave, birth to many English surnames not the least of which was the surname Renshaw. The Saxons were invited into England by the ancient Britons, in the 5th century. They were a race of fair skinned people living along the Rhine valley as far northeast as Denmark They were led General / Commander Hengist Horsa. The Saxons settled in the county of Kent, on the southeast coast of England Gradually, they probed north And westward, and during the next four hundred years forced the ancient Britons back into Wales and Cornwall in the west; Cumberland to the north. The Angles, on the other hand, occupied the eastern coast, the south folk In Suffolk, north folk in Norfolk. Under Saxon rule England prospered under a series of High Kings, the last of which was Harold. In 1066, the Norman invasion from France occurred and their victory at the Battle of Hastings. Subsequently, many of the vanquished Saxon land owners forfeited their land to Duke William and his invading Norman nobles. Generally, the Saxons who remained in the south were not treated well under Norman rule, and many-moved northward to the midlands, Lancashire and Yorkshire away from Norman oppression. This notable English family name, Renshaw, emerged as an influential name in the county of Lancashire where they were recorded as a family of great antiquity seated as Lords of the manor of Renshaw and estates in that shire, just outside Liverpool, they being neighbors of the Bolds. They branched to Derbyshire where they named their estates Renishaw. By the 16th century a branch of the family had headed north into Scotland. Meanwhile their seat remained at Renshaw Hall in Lancashire. They flourished on their estates for several centuries, intermarrying with other distinguished families of the area. Notable amongst the family at this time was Renshaw of Renshaw Hall. During the Middle Ages the surname Renshaw flourished and played an important role in local affairs and in the Political development of England. During the 15th, 16th, l7th, and 18th centuries, England was ravaged by plagues and religious conflict. Puritanism, the newly found political fervor of Cromwellianism, and the remnants of the Roman Church rejected all non-believers, each promoting their own cause. The conflicts between Church groups, the Crown and political groups all claimed their followers, and their impositions tithes, and demands on rich and poor alike broke the, spirit of men and many turned away from religion. Many families were freely encouraged, to migrate to Ireland, or to the "colonies". Some were, rewarded with grants of lands, others were banished. Some families were forced to migrate to Ireland. Where they became known as the "Adventurers for land in Ireland". Protestant settlers undertook to keep their faith, being granted lands previously owned by the Catholic Irish. They were known as the "Undertakers" There is no evidence that the family name migrated to Ireland, but this does, not -preclude the possibility of there scattered migration to that country". The New World offered -better opportunities and some migrated voluntarily, some were banished mostly for religious, reasons. Some left Ireland disillusioned, but many left directly from England, their home territories. Some- also moved to the European continent. Members of the family name Renshaw sailed aboard the huge armada of three masted sailing ships known as the "White Sails" which plied the stormy Atlantic. These overcrowded ships such as the Hector, the Dove and the Rambler, were pestilence ridden, sometimes 30% to 40% of the passenger list never reaching their destination, their numbers reduced by dysentery, cholera, small pox and typhoid. In North America, included amongst the first migrants which could be considered a kinsman of the surname Renshaw, or a variable - spelling of that family name was Henry Renshaw settled in Virginia in 1763 with his wife Isabella; Christopher Renshaw arrived in Philadelphia in 1750; David, Francis, Hugh, James, William Renshaw a arrived in Philadelphia between 1800 and 1870. >From the port of entry many settlers made their way west, joining the wagon trains to the prairies or to the West Coast. During the War of Independence, many loyalists made their way north to Canada about 1790, and became as the United Empire Loyalists. Contemporary notables of this surname, Renshaw, include many distinguished contributors; Sir Charles Renshaw of East Dereham in Norfolk. During, the course of our research we also determined the many Coats of Arms granted to different branches of the family name. The most ancient grant of a Coat of Arms found was; Silver and black - with the heraldic birds all counterchallenged. The Crest is; A silver crescent within a gold crescent.
Hi Everyone, I have just recently returned from attending the USS RENSHAW Ships reunion, held in Seattle, WA. this ship was named after several of the members of the Philadelphia Renshaw family, namely Commodore James Renshaw, Lt. Commander Richard T. Renshaw & Lt. Commander William Bainbridge Renshaw, who died going down with his ship in the battle of Galveston Bay, Texas, rather than surrender his ship to the confederates. I thought you all might enjoy reading the tribute handed out by the ships historian. Mr. Donald McCurry. U.S.S. RENSHAW DD/DDE - 499 1942-1970 World War 11 - Korea - Vietnam Renshaw was bred for World War Two. She still sails, but now in our memories of a time that we were challenged and were ready. There were orders to be carried out, bells to be answered and an enemy that had to be defeated before victory would be ours. The price would not be cheap, there would be sweethearts lost forever, family who would not rest until our return, and nineteen of our shipmates who paid with their lives for the freedom that we hold so dear. We fought and won with honor Another crew, another war. This time in a place called Korea. seemingly endless days and nights on station fighting an enemy that we don't see. More lost sweethearts, more families enduring the loneliness of our absence, more fighting. We win this war too, but we don't sail victorious into Pusan Day, we just win and go home. The peace that Renshaw won is short. She is mature now, but holds her place on station in the Gulf of Tonkin without complaint. Her guns have been silenced by politics. This is not a destroyerman's war. Jets launch on battle missions from the carrier that we proudly shadow. We watch as fewer return. Peace will again prevail, but this time without a clear victor. The days are shorter now and technology has won the battle of time. Last bell, last watch, last crew. Renshaw has met every demand and challenge with honor and has raised two generations of destroyermen. So long, but mot good bye, go in peace gallant ship. D. L. McCurry - Ship's Historian, 1999

Hi Steve Henzel & All. Several weeks ago Steve asked for a look up in the 1885, Shawnee county, Kansas census. This census being a state census was not indexed. Not having the time to review both rolls of micro film for this county, I brought them home to review at my local LDS. Steve was hoping to find his ISAAC RENSHAW, yesterday I was finally able to complete this look up. Sorry to say I did not find ISAAC, in Topeka, Shawnee Co., KS. now I know this is disappointing for Steve, however it at least indicates he moved to Topeka after 1885. I was really hoping to find him, as this census gave you a lot of information on an individual, that the Federal census doesn't. I did find a RENSHAW in Shawnee Co., KS. George W. Renshaw, age 30 (abt 1855), single , occupation farmer, born in Michigan- moved from Michigan to Kansas, living in Tecumseh, Shawnee, Co.,KS. Sure hope he belongs to one of you! Steve, if you can get to that 1895 state census, I bet you will get a lot of info on Isaac. Have you checked to see if it is available through LDS? happy hunting, Gwen

Hi all, I thought I would add to the Renshaw fun with a Renshaw family legend and mystery. I posted a message to this list earlier with details about some of the characters in this drama, so I won't repeat myself. In reading through some of my grandfather's papers, I found the following story, as told by my grandfather, James Edgar McDonald, Sr. (1907-1979): [I have added some details in brackets] 'My maternal grandfather, Joseph Spriggs Renshaw, was born on November 28, 1841, and passed away May 5, 1905. His mother [Lavina/Lavinia/Levina Spriggs] died in March of 1886. His mother was first married to Isaac Renshaw. To this marriage was born Joseph Spriggs Renshaw and at least one other child - Robert or Charles Renshaw. Quite a family legend revolves around this second son. It seems that he had left home when a youngster, and the family lost all contact with him. In the 1890s, there appeared at the home of Joseph Spriggs Renshaw [presumably near the "S" Bridge on the Ohio River, Triadelphia, Ohio County, West Virginia] a man who claimed he was the brother of my grandfather. There seemed to be facial resemblances, and the family was inclined to accept the story as truth. The man said there was a considerable Renshaw estate in Chicago which was to become their inheritance. It waited only for the signature of Joseph Spriggs Renshaw on the paper which he carried. As soon as this little matter was taken care of, then the estate could be admitted to probate and quickly the division of the estate could be made with a considerable amount of property and money coming to my grandfather. Usually when matters of importance came up, my grandfather sought the counseling of one of the Thornburg brothers, nearby residents and friends. He did not consult them at this time. After signing the paper, this was the last time my grandfather ever saw or heard of this supposed brother and the estate, too. Evidently, no inquiry was ever made concerning the "brother's" identity or the estate's authenticity. It is conjectured that by the signing of the paper, my grandfather forfeited or "signed over" whatever claim he might have had to the estate. It might also have been just a "hoax." Some years later [presumably before 9/27/1905], when my mother [Anna Laura Renshaw McDonald] was working for the Paull Mattress Company in Wheeling [West Virginia], a salesman who sold pillows for a Chicago firm asked my mother her name, and when she told him it was "Renshaw," he then asked if she was related to the Renshaw family in Chicago. He remarked that they were quite wealthy and prominent in Chicago.' I have only just read this story, and I have not yet tried to research it, but I thought I would offer it up to this list for a little fun/comment/research assistance. Does anybody have any ideas as to what the truth is about this story? Swindle? Hoax? Other? Any ideas on what Renshaw estate this may have been? Any record of the second son, Robert/Charles Renshaw? Enjoy! Brian ==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==* Brian and Ellen McDonald casamcd@airmail.net http://www.cyberramp.net/~mcdon/
