It was "Aunt Alice" who lived in Tupelo, AR, keeping house for her brother, David, when his wife, Katie Thomason Renshaw, died in 1915 leaving children ranging in ages from James Carl, 22, to baby girl, Thelma Alline. Joe Herman was age nine that year and his wife, Bernice, told me how well he remembered the ministrations of their beloved Aunt Alice in their home. Alice had beautiful funeral, according to leaflets prepared for the service which was held at First Baptist Church in Carmi; In first place on the leaflet was Whittier's poem, "I know not what the future hath..... I only know I cannot drift Beyond His love and care". Bernice Long Renshaw told me about the Renshaw Reunion held in Carmi in 1935. She did not go since she was expecting her second child. Her husband, Joe Herman, went with his father, David L. Renshaw and his brothers, Fred and Clyde, from their home in Arkansas. The Carmi newspaper told it this way: "The event was held at the White County Fairgrounds with one hundred and seventeen present, the group voting to make it an annual affair on the second Sunday in August. "Mr. Elbert Renshaw, of Indianapolis, who was on the staff of the Prairie Farmer" and of Radio Station WLS, was Master of Ceremonies. Following the sumptous basket dinner, the program was held, which included a duet by Martha Ann and Marilyn Renshaw, daughters of H. W. Renshaw who sang later by request, "Red Sails in the Sunset", with another vocal solo by Mr. Charles Renshaw. Others also participated in the program which had been arranged by Mr.Elbert W.Renshaw." This account was followed by a list of those attending. My Xerox copy was not legible right at the end so I may have missed a few names. 3. Hi All, I apologize to those of you who have "Renshaw Reflections," however there are those on the list who do not have this book.I recieved a request to do a look up on Ebenezer Renshaw. Per the index the given name Ebenezer appears on pgs. 60,69, 70, 75. So I have scanned those pages along with the pages prior and after those requested as I felt there was additional info that might help others. Hope no one minds, Gwen pgs. 59 & 60 III. William & NANCY LEACH RENSHAW William Renshaw and Nancy Leach were married 11 May 1873 in Rowan County N.C. They were in Knox Co. TN in 1805. William is a argon or grgr-son of Abraham Renshaw. We have no way of placing these young Renshaws in their families or, indeed, their proper generations, since the parents often had children born after the eldest of their children were married and also had children. Since these Renshaws left no wills the first place to look in getting a family together, we must make many assumptions, which is frustrating, indeed. I have been in communication with all of these early Renshaws (a delightful experience) and they have given me the most assistance possible. The Richard Leach family lived quite near Abraham and his sons, Joseph and Elijah Renshaw. Several Renshaws married Leach daughters and came to Tennessee but William and Nancy went from Knox County to Logan County, KY where William died in 1815 leaving a large family. The Inventory of his estate gives us an idea of the life-style of a comfortable farm family of that day: 3 mares 6 tubs 1 pitcher 3 fillies 1 firkin 1 tumbler 1 colt 1 coffee mill sugar dish 6 cows tools salt cellar 4 bull yearlings 2 bee stands 6 tin cups 7 head sheep 1 saddle 6 spoons 5 hogs 1 raw hide 1 kettle pair stateyards 1 saw 1 skillet scythe 2 pails 1 pot Cooper's jointer 1 Do. & conifer 2 or pot hooks 24 geese 1 candlestick 3 ladles Mattock 4 bedsteads 1 hatchet 3 hoes 3 bed and furniture 1 dictionary' double tree woman's saddle 1 3 spelling books augurs 2 basins 1 small bell from 2 wheels & cards 1 tray & sifter chisels chest 2 bridles plow dish 2 sets gear reap hooks 6 plates 1 black Do. 7 bond. wt. tobacco tea canister I dun Do. 1 press 4 saucers I white-face heifer 1 churn teapot 1 brown heifer 1 little chair coffee pot 1 yellow sorrell We have no documented records of the children of William and- Nancy 59 Renshaw but some assumptions may be made. There is reason to believe that no other Renshaws were in Logan County. There were recorded two marriages of Renshaw girls; one in 1810 and one in 1817. They are included in this list which we know is incomplete: 1. James Renshaw 2. Rachel Renshaw 3. Betsy Renshaw 4. Joseph Renshaw 5. John Renshaw 6. Samuel Renshaw a. James Renshaw b. 21 Nov 1794 Rowan Co N.C. "Came across the mountains to Tennessee in his mother's arms, say some of the family. Many traditions are incorrect and often unfounded although some are related to fact and can be helpful. James was more than seven years old when they came into Knox County and had brothers and sisters, more children being born in Tennessee. After William's death, Nancy took her family to White County IL, where many of her neighbors were settling. There James married Sarah (Sally) Phipps, dau of Lock Phipps who was one of the appraisers of William's estate and probably influential in Nancy's move. James. and Sally went later to Shelby County where his brother, John, settled, then to Macon county, IL where they were to become leading citizens of the area. In addition to farming, James had a General store, leaving the farming to his sons; son Lute remaining on the family farm until after his father's death. Samuel and Ebenezer Renshaw who were near Nancy's family in White County, are not documented as brothers of James. Samuel later went to Sangamon County and was listed as James' brother by a County historian and Miss Martha Montgonery, a descendant, believes this is correct. James was an astute business man and prospered. A favorite story tells of Abe Lincoln having made his first political speech in front of Renshaw's store in Decatur, IL. These stories are probably true for Lincoln was a good politician and made his presence known, especially in the Springfield area. Ch of James and Sally Phipps Renshaw were: 1. William Renshaw 2. Lucius Renshaw 3. Charles Renshaw 4. George (Tobe) Renshaw 5. Dorinda Renshaw 6. Benjamin (Ben) Renshaw 7. John (Jack) Renshaw 1. William Renshaw b. 9 Mar 1822 White Cc IL m. 23 Dec 1847 Sarah Worthington b. 15 Oct 1826 Warren Cc TN, dau of William Samuel and Polly Barnes Worthington of McMinn- ville TN. William, an ambitious young I man, had gone to Sparta, TN to study medicine under Dr. Jesse Barnes, uncle and guardian of Sally. After their marriage they remained in Sparta where he prac- ticed medicine for about ten years. They then removed their family to Wise County, TX. The move was made that they might claim a large tract of land (a League and Labor) which Sally had inherited after her father was killed by Indians in the Texas area and the Mexican government had made grants to her and her brother as compensation. 60

The top of each page usually indicates the street or road for the people on the page. You need to find a map of the state, county, and townships for each census year. They changed frequently. You might also check variations in spellings of names. This causes people to not appear in a census. Actually they might be there but the census takers changed and their spelling habits weren't all the same.

    3. Hi folks, I received the following post from Doris Moore. My husband's Renshaw line is: William Renshaw (1790-1815) and Nancy Leach James Renshaw and Sarah "Sally" Phipps Charles Lewis Renshaw and Elizabeth Morris Benjamin Joseph Renshaw and Mary Agnes McCarty Maybelle Renshaw and Roy Moore Robert Moore I think from looking at some material sent by a cousin that Charles Lewis and Dr. William were brothers. Is that correct? If so, I am very interested in purchasing a copy of the book you mentioned on the Renshaw cousins. Thanks, Doris Moore I wish to make it clear to everyone I am NOT SELLING this book. I have no idea where it can be purchased! The film/order number (#151338 ) I referenced in my previous post, is the Mormon Library catalog number. It is on microfilm and can be rented through them. You then can view it at their facility and make copies. Our local facility charges 25 cents a page. Which is why I only have portions of this book. I am happy to share those pages I have and will scan and post any request to the list for all to view. Please post all requests to the RENSHAW list, so that all will be aware of what data is being requested. It also would be a good idea that when responding to a post on the list, other than of a personal nature, you respond to the list with your query or answer. This way we can all see what lines and everyone is working on. There may be some member who has that piece you are looking for, but is unaware who needs it. Under separate post will be the information I do have Doris is looking for. Thanks, Gwen

It was her persistence that made it possible for those interested to become members of Colonial Dames of XVII Century, Sons or Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Daughters of American Colonists, Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia and Magna Charts Dames. Johnie Mae Morgan paved the way by discovering our eligibility to the Daughters of the American Revolution through the Worthington Tunnells and Carney lines. I met Charles Greathouse in 1976 when he visited a sister-in-law in San Antonio. We compared notes (I had never met Charles before) and not long after this meeting he sent me a large envelope with copies of material he had collected on the Renshaw and Hogg family. I was sorry to hear of his death in 1980. Somewhere along the way we visited with Dr. John Beall before his death. --He gave us addresses of Beall descendants and later sent copies of the land grant and field notes for the survey in Wise County. It seems that he worked in the Texas land grant office while attending the University of Texas and had written for copies of this Worthington Survey. Dr. Beall died before I had an opportunity to thank him for his assistance. After my retirement, when I started working on this compilation in earnest, I discovered the names he gave were invaluable for I was able to complete this Beall line fairly rapidly. I discovered another genealogist in Francis Copass Bowen. Although Francis died before I ever had the opportunity, to know him, his wife Nellie Fox Bowen has been most helpful in sharing information on the Beall and Bowen lines. Chasing descendants has been like working a jig saw puzzle, but gradually you have all fallen into place. There are still a few blanks which I have been unable to complete. I had been led to believe that Frank Renshaw, son of Charles Franklin Renshaw, died young. Much to my surprise I recently found that he grew up, married and had a wife named Zelma, and that they later moved to California and had a daughter who is married. There may be children. Also I have been unable to contact the descendants of Margaret Bullock Garbarino or William Bullock. If anyone knows these cousins, please let me know and I will write an addendum. How can I ever forget the wonderful Sunday when Fern McAfee spent the entire afternoon with me giving me names, dates and addresses of those Bealls who were missing. I am also indebted to her for the copy of Lute Renshaw's "Stories of old Trail Drivers of Long Ago" which she brought that day. In 1972, Mrs. L. W. Renshaw sent me a complete listing of the descendants of Lute Renshaw, as also did Ralph Renshaw. When I asked later for an update, all you Lute Renshaw descendants were just great to respond. Had this history not been started in 1972, 1 doubt that I ever would have had the nerve or energy to tackle it. So many of mother's cousins were living then and I had heard their names enough that I knew where to start. It was the summer of 1972 that Doris and I visited with Evelyn Hardy in Bridgeport, Texas. She permitted me to make a copy of her mother's memoirs "I'll Carry You Back" which gave us information on the Will Renshaw line. She also gave me the name and address of bar daughter, Hope Hardy Cray, who was most helpful in assisting in giving addresses for the descendants in the Will Renshaw line.

    3. HISTORICAL MARKER Location: U.S. 380, five and a half miles east of Decatur DR.WILLIAM RENSHAW (1822-1887) Born in Illinois, William Renshaw studied medicine and set up practice in Sparta, Tennessee. His wife Sarah received from the Mexican government a grant of land in Texas, where her father Samuel Worthington lost his life in a colonization attempt in 1828. Dr. Renshaw traveled to Texas in 1853 to locate his headright, which encompassed many acres of Wise County north of this marker site. Dr. Renshaw returned to Sparta and served two terms in the Tennessee Legislature before moving his family to Texas in 1859 . The first doctor to settle permanently in Wise County, Dr. Renshaw was often away from home for long periods, with a practice extending from Denton to Jacksboro. The Renshaws organized one of the county's earliest schools, taught by J. D. White, for their own and neighbor children. After the Civil War, the family moved to Decatur, where Dr. Renshaw and his son Lute opened a drugstore. They were devout Baptists and supported Decatur Baptist College. Dr. Renshaw died in 1887 and was buried at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Decatur. As his ten children married, each received a portion of the Worthington survey. Two family members still own part of the property. A number of descendants became doctors. (1976) FOREWORD When Johnie Mae Horgan published Early Years in the Life of the Renshaw Family in 1971, many of us became interested in the family line that Dr. William Renshaw and Sarah Worthington Renshaw established in Texas. With the encouragement of Bernice Bullock, wife of Randolph Bullock, and promises of assistance from my sister, Doris Tipps, I agreed to compile a family history of the Renshaw Family. I was to collect data on the descendants, and Johnie Mae Morgan was to continue to add to her research on our progenitors. Although I was born on my grandfather-Ad Renshaw's place near Decatur, we moved to Denton when I was five years of age, so I did not grow up knowing all these Renshaw cousins. It has been a revelation and a pleasure to become ac- quainted by correspondence with so many cousins throughout the United States. Yes, I knew my first cousins but had lost contact with most. This project has served to pull us all together, for a short time, again. My husband became so impressed with the number of responses that he suggested the title Our Renshaw Cousins. We Wilson children in Denton looked forward to the annual two week summer visit of our grandmother, Lizzie Renshaw. Not only because she helped with the endless chores of a large family by churning, snapping beans and peeling peaches for canning and preserving, but most of all because she told stories of Indians and pioneer days in Wise County. I can see her now, sitting in her chair on the back porch, peeling peaches and saying, "Now which story do you want me to tell? Your grandfather thought he shot an Indian," and she was off. At times my stories may be more Lizzie Perrin Renshaw than Ad Renshaw but what Grandma described reflects the experience of both families in the early pioneer home. My college history professor urged me to record those stories, but youth proscrastinates and this was the day before tape recorders, so we must depend on a dimming memory and the assistance of others. Our children and grandchildren in this age of space and T.V. have not had the opportunity of hearing those early day stories that are now history, and the generation who have heard those stories is already beginning to dwindle. It is my intent to preserve some of this early family history, and perhaps some day when they are old enough to care, our descendants will find that they have a heritage of which they can be truly proud. I When this project was started in 1972, I was pleased to discover that there, were many Renshaws who had collected a great deal of information on our ancestors and were willing to share with me. No one seems to have made a complete study of the over 500 descendants. Our Renshaw Cousins is a compilation of the research of many people. I take credit only for collecting the information and recording It to the best of my knowledge and ability. Through the years, Johnie Mae Horgan continued to send the results of her tireless search. In addition, we are indebted to Dr. Horace Renshaw, who shared much information before his death, and to this wife Carol Jim for pictures and later material. ii
