    1. [RENSHAW-L] Alger-Renshaw connection
    2. This information is for descendants of James and Araminta (Smith) Renshaw: Three daughters of Rev. Simeon Alger and his wife Mary or Mariette Amanda Howard married James and Araminta Renshaw descendants, as follows: Mariette A. Alger married Leonidas Renshaw about 1861, probably in Clayton County, Iowa. They had three children. Mariette died young, on 28 March 1866. She is buried in National Cemetery, Clayton Co., IA. As was so often the case, Leonidas Renshaw married Mariette's sister Angeline Alger a year later, on 14 March 1867 in Elkader, Clayton Co., IA. I have a photocopy of the entry of this marriage in the marriage register for Clayton County. Leonidas and Angeline had six children together, but the county histories attribute Mariette's children to Angeline also. Leonidas Renshaw had an older sister named Adaline Renshaw. On 24 December 1857 she married John Carty in Clayton Co., IA. They had three children: Merrill, Idella, and Charles. Adaline Renshaw Carty died about 1865 and her husband died a year later. The children were raised by members of the Renshaw and Everall families. (Vallonia Renshaw had married John Everall.) Idella Carty appears with her grandmother Martha (Evans) Renshaw on the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Clayton Co., IA. She married Willart Best Corlett in Clayton County. I am not sure yet whom Charles Carty married, but Merrill Carty married Luella Alger, a younger sister of Mariette and Angeline Alger. Merrill, by the way, was named for the husband of Amanda Renshaw, sister of Leonidas and of Adaline Renshaw. The husband's name was Merrill Augusta Knight. There is a query on one of the message boards at Ancestry.com asking about a family line from Iowa. One of the ancestors mentioned is Alger Carty. I have not yet been able to contact the person who posted the query, but I am fairly sure that Alger Carty was the son or grandson of Merrill Carty and Luella Alger, and therefore a Renshaw descendant. 1. [RENSHAW-L] John Wilson Anderson / Ella Arminie Renshaw
    2. Mark
    3. Hello List, I am searching for information on my great grandparents, John and Ella (Renshaw) Anderson. They were married July 2, 1889 in Coles County, Illinois. John's parents were Thomas and Elizabeth (Helton) Anderson. Ella's parents were Unknown and Emmaline (Helton) Renshaw. John and Ella had at least 4 children, possible as many as 7. Cora Irene Anderson - b. Dec 9, 1902 in Fall River, Greenwood County, Kansas. Ernest Rex Anderson - b. Jan 31, 1904 in Sullivan, Moultrie County, Illinois. Frank Anderson - (probably his middle name). Ray Anderson - (probably his middle name). Both Cora and Ernest when by their middle names, which is where that assumption came for Frank and Ray. John worked on the Wabash Railroad and moved around a lot, for the most part in Illinois. Cora Irene attended a different school each year until she reached high school. All of this information came from Cora Irene Anderson's Bible. "Uncle" Rex's obituary indicated that there were 7 children in all, although only those listed above were in grandma's Bible. Have not been able to find anything else out about John's or Ella's parents. Hoping these names will be familiar to someone on the list. Mark Peters Phx, Az.

    3. A. R. Renshaw, p. 1125 A. R. RENSHAW, proprietor of the leading livery stable in Washington, was born in 1854, in Armstrong county, Penn., a son of W. H. Renshaw, a native of Philadelphia, where he followed the occupation of a river pilot for many years, but is now a farmer in Armstrong county. He married Miss Louisa Rogers (now deceased), of "old-country" parentage, and nine children were born to them, all of whom live in Armstrong county except the subject of these lines. A. R. Renshaw was reared in his native county, at the common schools of which he received a liberal education. Early in life he learned the trade of a carpenter, which he followed for several years. On February 15, 1890, he came to Washington county, and bought out the livery stable which he has since successfully conducted. On January 1, 1890, he was united in marriage with Annie B. Kerr, of Armstrong county, Penn. Our subject's home is on East Wheeling street. Text taken from page 1125 of: Beers, J. 3. The Complete Newgate Calendar, Vol. V ---------------------------------------------------- BENJAMIN RENSHAW Executed, after an Abortive Attempt, at Nottingham, 29th of August, 1812, for setting fire to a Haystack THIS man was convicted on the clearest evidence of the wicked, wasteful crime of burning the hay of Mr Charles Stanton -- and, in aggravation of such business, soon after- [142] --------------------------------------------------------- wards, of wantonly slaughtering a ram, the property of Mr Isaac Dodsley, both of the town of Mansfield, in the county of Nottinghamshire. He was sentenced to death, and left by the judge for execution. About eleven o'clock he was taken from the prison and placed in a cart, accompanied by the executioner and a respectable gentleman who had daily visited him during his condemnation. The concourse of spectators was unusually great, to witness the awful catastrophe. When arrived at the fatal tree, and some time had been spent in singing and prayer, Renshaw himself prayed with an audible voice, and afterwards addressed the multitude for the space of fifteen or twenty minutes, exhorting them, and especially youth, to avoid evil company; and this he did in a manner which excited the astonishment of every beholder. Such fortitude, unshaken confidence and composure were scarcely ever before witnessed, expressing at the same time, as he had done before, his assurance of the mercy of God. After he was turned off, the noose of the rope moved under his chin, and it was deemed proper to put him into the cart, that the rope might be adjusted afresh, after which he was turned off again. This circumstance occasioned a considerable sensation among the spectators, who generally expressed their abhorrence of the executioner, to whose carelessness they attributed the accident. After hanging the usual time, his body was given to his friends for interment at Mansfield.
