The Reitz family of Coolspring, Pa? My great-grandfather was Peter R. Reitz. He fought in the Civil War. His son was William Reitz of Coolspring. He married his first cousin Anna Reitz. Polly was grandpa's sister, Lavina, and Lucinda. I have traced the family to Williamsport, Pa. They helped build a Lutheran church, still open today. There is a book written on the Reitzs. They arrived in Philadelphia on a ship in 1700s. Helped to fight in the Revolutionary War. I got as far back as 1400s where they were in Germany. 1. [REITZ] Searching census records for 'Reitz' on Ancestry.com
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: prreitz Surnames: Reitz Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.reitz/408.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Bill, I have had far more success finding Reitz with FamilySearch, particularly in 1940 census. Combining the general uncommon Reitz surname and vagaries of enumerators' handwriting, the most common surname errors are: R becomes K or B e becomes i or a i becomes L or e t occasionally becomes L due to misplaced cross z sometimes becomes s ... and others that defy categorization. There are hundreds of combinations and permutations of those common errors, too many to search effectively on Ancestry due to severely restricted use of wildcards. I always correct Ancestry's incorrect redactions, if I can get to the census image. I prefer Ancestry's redaction format, but getting to it can be a convoluted process if one can't get a hit on the desired family. If the family can be found on FamilySearch, choose a neighbor on the same page as a surrogate; one with a very clear entry with common, simple name unlikely to be mistaken. Then, search for that surrogate on Ancestry in (exactly) 1940. When found, it gives immediate access to the same census image page, with Ancestry's interactive features and ability to correct some data. To get Ancestry's redaction on the family, look for the link on the found surrogate's redacted info to "see neighbors". (Forget the exact term.) That gives a clickable list of names that should now include the desired Reitz family members as incorrectly entered, from which one can get to the redacted summary. Now, if only David Hause would give some of his search secrets! ; >) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
