Dr. William ADAMS and his brother Robert ADAMS came from Dublin, Ireland to the Mohawk Vally in early manhood about 1747. Robert had known Sir William Johnson in Dublin where he had served a clerkship in a store. Robert opened a store at Fort Hunter with Sir William as a partner. Later he came to Johnstown and opened the first Johnstown store in 1764. The Van Voast family in Johnstown are descendants and still have in their possession his store ledger which is quite interesting. Dr. William ADAMS was amoung the first to lease land at Johnstown from Sir William. He was made a member of Saint Patrick's Lodge, F&AM on December 21, 1771 and on July 25, 1774 he witnessed Sir William's will. He was surgeon for Sir Williams troops at the Battle of Lake George in 1755, and treated Sir William's wounds received at that battle. The extent of Dr. ADAM's stay in Johnstown is not known. Pierson's "First Settlers of Schenectady" page 1, states that Dr. William ADAMS settled there about 1757 and was surgeon under Sir William Johnson in the French and Indian War. He practiced in Schenectady for over 70 years. In 1827 when 97 years old he was still healthy and vigorous and made a journey by stage to Litchfield Conn. From Albany, over 70 miles in a day with very little fatigue. There he visited a favorite grand daughter. I. Dr. William ADAMS was born in 1730 and died in 1833 at age 103 while out driving was thrown from the carriage and died as a result. He married Margaret HAMILTON who was born in 1734 and died on April 14, 1800. II. Children of Dr. William and Margaret ADAMS: 1. Catherine ADAMS, born 1762 and died November 24, 1839 at age 77. She married Dr. Thomas REID and lived in Johnstown, New York 2. James ADAMS, born 1768 and died on April 20, 1803 at age 35. 3. Archibald Hamilton ADAMS, born 1769 and died April 5, 1811 at age 42. He married Maria MCKINNEY daughter of Daniel MCKINNEY. Maria was born in 1777 and died July 6, 1810. Archibald and Maria had a daughter Catherine Reid ADAMS, born 1800 and died 1805. Dr. James ADAMS and his brother Archibald both practiced in Schenectady, New York. "New York in the Revolution" by Ferno page 537 lists Dr. William ADAMS, Surgeon on the lines from April 1 to August 1, 1781 under Captain Richard Sacketh's Command. "History of Schenectady during Revolution" by Hanson page 129 lists Dr. William ADAMS, Second Albany County Militia, Land Bounty Rights. Dr. ADAMS took a prominent part in the ceremonies at the time of General Lafayette's visit to Schenectady. One night the "revermen" staying in Schenectady became so boisterous, Dr. ADAMS went out to remonstrate with them, but they put him astride of a cow and led him through the streets, very much to his discomfort. He was then an aged man.
