In the meantime (re the McGavins), you might want to try the Toronto city directories, they're online up to about 1878 (when it's up and running) at: http://digit.mtrl.toronto.on.ca:8080. If nothing shows up, then perhaps the entries are after 1878 and therefore not on-line... My URL to the 1871 census (http://130.15.161.15/census/index.html) didn't show any McGavins who were physicians.
