My maternal g.grandfather was George William Reid, Keeper of Prints & Drawings at the British Museum 1866-1883 +1887. His father George was an attendant in the Museum but died prematurely in 1843 aged 45. He was baptised in Folkestone March 1799 having been born 1 August 1798 son of George who, according to a book of reminiscences about the Museum an the people employed there published in the 1860s "held an appointment at Dover Castle during the wars with France" and also stated that the family came from the Dunkeld area. Explorations at Dover Castle, PRO and Kent Archives have been negative. Examination of OPRs around Dunkeld does not produce a George, a William or an Andrew (bro to GW). Whether George was the one who came south or an earlier one is not known. Can anyone help John Reid Hebden
