He had a wife, Anne Gordon Reid and son Nathaniel born 1735 in Iverness Scotland. Joseph was exiled to America by the English after the Jacobite Revolution in 1745, for his support of Bonnie Prince Charley. Joseph and his family settled in Augusta Co., Va and had a son William born 14 Dec. 1746. Anne was probably pregnant on the trip over.
