    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: mhamaha1 Surnames: Reid/Reed/Read Ginnings/Jennings Bennett Calhoun Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.reid/240.760.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: John, I have a Phebe Jennings b 1855 Mo, dau of Thomas D & Phebe Reid Jennings b 10 Feb 1820 in either AL (1860 M0) or TN (all others) depending on the Census you read. They were married in Marshall Co TN 1843. Phebe Reid's father was David Y Reid m Elizabeth Bennett 1811 Williamson Co TN (TN Marriages to 1825). David Y died between 1820 and 1849 when I find a Chancery Court Record where Phebe Reid and her Husband Thomas D Jennings and her 2 sisters, Sarah m William Maxwell and Anna m John Nelson Jennings, sue for their share of Phebe's grandfather's estate. The grandfather, James Reid b abt 1776 d 1844 m Phebe Calhoun b 3 Sept 1772 Mechlenburg NC. James Reid d 1844. It names David Y (deceased) as Phebe's father. David Y had 13 named siblings: Charles, David Y, Frances, George, George M, Hannah, James, John, Parmelia, Phebe, William, Zacheous P, Samuel D, & Joseph M. In an 1837 Deed it says James Reid (d 1844) was "of MS". I have no idea where or when David Y was born. Or where they went after the 1811 marriage. Or Where they died. Phebe Reid (spelling per chancery court doc) m in Marshall Co TN as Pheley Reed m Thomas D Ginnings (Spellings per Marshall TN Marriages). The old writing is not easy to read and not only do the family name spellings change, sometimes the same person's name is spelled several ways in the same doc. as well as misspellings. Just to keep us on our toes. There is also a John Reed family in Marshall TN. I don't know if John Reed is related to James Reid or not. Phebe Reid's daughter, Phebe Jennings, funeral record says her parents were William Jennings and Elizabeth Reed. Possibly misinformation from my grandmother who was the informant. She never talked about her family. She may not have known. Or she was trying to hide something. Phebe Jennings told my mother that she was 1/4 Cherokee. She also told my mother not to tell anyone or there would be dire consequences. Obviously, someone told as I heard that story all my life. In fact it is why I started genealogy work on my family in the 1st place. I set out to prove or disprove this. Some 5000 people in my tree by now, and, So far, nothing conclusive. Phebe Jennings died in 1944 in Ft Smith AR. All Censuses have her living with Thomas D and Phebe Reid while growing up and later and as an adult, Phebe Jennings child is listed as Thomas D's grandson on 1880 Mo Census. I have as yet not nailed down the Jennings side nor Elizabeth Bennett's parents. Right now I am concentrating on the Reid/Reed side. As you said you have some ALABAMA Reids, I was wondering if any of this connects to your Reids. Or if any of the Reid/Reeds with Indian blood can help, I would appreciate it. Thanks for any help you can give. Maylene Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
