Most of the trees involving Nathaniel have as at least a portion of their source, the Book "The Nathan Reids of Virginia in the March of Freedom". I recently received copies of pages from that book, primarily looking to see the sources used by the authors. Unfortunately, *all* of the facts regarding Thomas and Joseph were from a single source, namely an unpublished genealogy by Etta Margaret Wells (nee Reid). Etta was a great-granddaughter of Nathaniel and Elizabeth. Has anyone ever seen a copy of this genealogy? I really want to know what sources were used by Etta and whether they still exist.

They would have come over to Liverpool between 1860 and 1864. Alexander REID was a cooper by trade and his son, James REID was a mariner. James married Elizabeth SMITH (also believed b. in Ireland around 1852) and her father was Thomas SMITH labourer. Both families lived in off the Scotland Road area of Liverpool. James and Elizabeth's son Christopher (my grandfather) was born in Liverpool in 1872, after that both his parents seem to have disappeared and Christopher is recorded as living with his uncle and aunt = Charles and Mary LUCAS in the 1881 census. The Lucas's were both born in Ireland. Can anybody help please.

I went to Dallas in 2005 to help my daughter after surgery and have had unexpected health problems so that I haven't been back to SC and haven't yet had my things (including family pictures and genealogy) brought to Texas. I promise to keep you in my notes here and send a copy of the picture of Sophia and Lemuel once I have it in hand again. I haven't been able to find the connection between my Reids and them. Red hair runs in our Reids, too. I'm curious about the Stokes you have listed as one of your family names. My mother's side of the family also includes two Stokes connections. My mother's maternal grandmother Mary Ann Knight b.1850 St. Peter's Parish, Beaufort, SC. was the daughter of Ann Stokes b.1829 and John D. Knight b.1826. My mother's paternal grandmother was Julia F. Bessinger b.1853 daughter of John W. Bessinger b.1825 and wife J. Elizabeth Preacher b.1829 whose mother was Sarah Stokes b. abt.1800 wife of David Preacher b.1792. Both Ann and J. Elizabeth Stokes are dead ends in my family history. Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.reid/2415.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Right now, I'm doing some 'shotgun research' the Reid line in that area and time (SR being defined as shooting at anything that moves and hoping some of what you hit might be what you wanted). I *suspect* without haveing sufficient data that your Reuben is connected to mine. My Reids were in the Pendleton/Spartanbug/Greenville area from at least the 1790's to the 1880's, with the line running: William Reid 1746-1793 -Thomas Reid 1770-1830 --Reuben Reid ~1800-~1880 ---Randal Reid 1820-1897 It's generally assumed that the father of William is Joseph ~1719-?, but I haven't seen source data confirming this at the current time. 'My' Reuben isn't yours, but the timing and proximity suggests a relationship. Also, Joseph is supposed to have been born in Scotland (again -- I've seen no sources). Continuing in the no-source vein, William is supposed to be a brother of the 'Nathaniel Reid' who is fairly well documented. In trying to find sources for Joseph, I collected the following records from various books of legal & deed records in Pendleton, S.C. The first concerns a Joseph Reid, about the right age to be your Reuben's father, with a son named George, who is likely his eldest, as the note where he sells land to his son is dated 1793, but isn't recorded until 1800 (I'm assuming its something of a pseudo-will. Possibly along the lines of give me $150 now, and you can have the land when I'm dead). He also has a son named Joseph as he's listed as 'Sr' and 'Jr' witnesses the note. His son George died in 1832, so was around long enough for your Jesse, b. 1824 to have known him, but would be dead by the time this book was written. Considering George's children likely died about 20-30 years after him, they would probably have been dead by the time Jesse was 38. Again -- this seems reasonable. One of the deed records below is actually for the Nathaniel Reid mentioned above (I *belive*). What's interesting is that the land he is selling is noted to have been granted to him by William 'Moutrie' in 1793. William Moultrie *also* granted land to Joseph Reid around 1793 in the same area at the same time. If I were the type to make guesses based on too little evidence, I would hypothesize that Nathaniel and Joseph listed in the deeds were brothers. Once more with the sourceless speculation, this would make that Joseph, Nathaniel, and William all sons of Joseph who was born in Scotland, with the expanded tree being: (PLEASE DON'T ANYONE PUT THIS IN AN ONLINE TREE BECAUSE IT'S GUESSWORK!!!) Joseph Reid b~1720 -Joseph Reid 174? - ~1799 --George Walker Reid --Reuben Reid 1785 - ? ---Jesse Reid 1824 - ? ----Washington Irving Reid --Joseph Reid --Jesse Reid --Blincoe Reid -Nathaniel Reid 1744 - 1798 --Edith Reid --... -William Reid 1746 - 1793 --Thomas Reid --... Anyway -- make of it what you will. It's all speculation. ====================================================== "I, Joseph Reed (Called Sr. in the oath) for $150 sold to George Walker Reed (also Read) 50 acres on N.
