    1. [REID] James Reid cir.1750 Sea Captain, Scottish, of Londonderry, Ireland
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: WClayton43 Surnames: Reid, Reed, Sterrett Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.reid/3883/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ann Reid b.1752 Glendermott Parish, Londonberry, Ireland married John Douglass Sterrett abt.1784 in Londonderry and had 4 children in Gortree Hill, Londonderry, Ireland during 1784-1795 before immigrating to the US abt.1795. A short stay in Lancaster Co PA and possibly a short stay enroute in MD they arrived in (now) Craigsville, Augusta Co., VA in 1796. A Grandson (also John Douglass Sterrett 1823-1901) wrote a lengthy Family History (see notes below). In the History he writes of his Grandmother saying: Grandmother Sterrett was very proud of her Reid kin. Her maiden name was Reid; and her oldest son, Uncle James Sterrett was named after her brother, James Reid, to whom she was devotedly attached and was a captain of a ship and went down with his ship in a terrific storm at sea. She often enlarged upon his manly beauty, personal prowess, etc. Said, "he had the finest nose and the prettiest mouth, and withal he was the finest looking man she ever saw." Said also, "he was upwards of six feet high, built from the ground up, stout and muscular, well proportioned and perfectly straight", etc. She also related upon the name and fame of her Reid ancestors, who were, she affirmed, held in great honor by their country and countrymen. I'm hoping this James Reid might eventually provide a link of Ann Reid to their parents. The Family History referenced above was written "as he received it from the lips of his grandmother, Ann Sterrett, his father, Robert Sterrett, his mother Isabella Sterrett and from other trustworthy sources." Obviously this was written before his death in 1901, but the Bibliography of the Book where the write-up was "typed from the handwriting" of John Douglas Sterrett says it was written cir.1861. If this is true it was likely written to record the family history on the eve of his entering Civil War as or slightly after his enlistment in the Virginia 4th Infantry in 1861. This transcription was written in Book Two, Genealogy of the Braford Family in Virginia 1740 - 1968 by Dorothy White Binns published together with Book One, Genealogy of the Braford Family in Virginia 1740 - 1968 by Earl Nevette Chiles, Sr 1968. 1. Re: [REID] Who were the 1st Reid to come to America?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: WClayton43 Surnames: Reid, Reed, Sterrett, Douglas Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.reid/240.761.1.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ann Reid b.1752 Glendermott Parish, Londonberry Ireland married John Douglas Sterrett b.1748 Kilmacrenan, County Donegal, Ireland abt 1784 in Londonberry, Ireland. Their first 5 children James Reed (Sterrett) b.1785, Sarah b.8Oct1787, Robert b.11June1789, Elizabeth b.8May1794 and Jane b. 8May1794 all were born in Gortree Hill, Londonderry, Ireland. The last 3 children were Ann Reid b.27Jan1799 , Rebecca b.20Oct1801 (my ancestor), and Mary b.21Jan1803 all born in Craigsville, Augusta Co., VA. So this family containing a female Reid came to Augusta Co VA in 1796. We know they spent a short time in Lancaster Co PA and possibly a short stay somewhere in MD in route to Augusta VA. We are greatly indebted to a Grandson of the above John Douglas Sterrett/Ann Reid also named John Douglas Sterrett (1823-1901) who wrote down a lengthy family history (it is 8 pages single spaced when typed) sometime in his lifetime, but family legend dates it to cir.1861, likely about the time of his entering the Civil War 4th Virginia Infantry, Confederate. He wrote down what he had heard from the "lips of his Grandmother Ann Reid Sterrett, his father, his mother and other trusted sources." It is likely the Reid's of early Augusta were related in some manner. In the above referenced Sterrett History the author states clearly that the family was Scottish and settled for a time in Londonderry which at that time was peopled entirely of Scots. But the history does not address how long the Reid's and Sterrett's were in Londonderry (or for how many generations). The Mother of John Douglas Sterrett b.1752 was a Douglas. Much "to do" was made of the proud traditions of these Sterrett, Reid and Douglas families in Scotland by Ann Reid Sterrett, the immigrant. I have a document made by OCR with corrections of the entire write-up by John Douglas Sterrett if of onterest to anyone with potential ties to the family Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: wellkid Surnames: Reid Gaynor Kirkman Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.reid/3872.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am a great-granddaughter of William A. Reid and Ellie Blanche Kirkman, via their daughter Ruby Strunk. Our family info has William Allen Reid b.2 Dec 1869, d. 29 Nov 1949. The story goes that he didn't like his given middle name, so he changed it; at this point I'm not sure which was original. But we have his father as Michael (not John T.) Reid, born in Ireland (1820 or 1831?), m. Margaret Gaynor in Philadelphia 1856. Michael supposedly had a mother Kate, a brother Henry, and an aunt Margaret Reid who married a ship's captain surname Thompson. Margaret Gaynor's mother was Anna, and Margaret was born 1834 or 1845, possibly in Ireland, Canada, or England. Unfortunately I haven't yet been able to substantiate much of this by official records. Can anyone else help sort us out? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I HAVE AN ARCHIBALD REID, HIS FATHER WAS EPHRAIM D REID, MOTHER WAS ROSALINDA BERRY. THEY WERE IN AL IN 1830 AND MS IN 1840. I HAVE A CENSUS SHOWING EPHRAIM BORN IN SOUTH CAROLINA IN 1792, BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE. OUR FAMILY SETTLED AROUND TISHOMINGO COUNTY MS AND MANY ARE STILL THERE TODAY." It was posted by Sarah Reid Hodges. I'd love to get in contact with her, someone who knows her or someone interested in the line of Ephraim D. Reid. I know who Ephraim's father is and also all Ephraim's siblings. Jay K.

Author: reidw Surnames: Reid Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.reid/3850.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I research a Caucasian Reid family that was in GA from about 1810 until about 1845, and which includes a John Reid (born late 1700s probably NC) and his son John H. Reid who I believe was born about 1822 in GA. At least two of the siblings (born in 1813-1831 in GA) migrated to Texas, one (Jesse) to the Gonzales Co. area around 1867 and one (James) a bit earlier. There may have been more. Several siblings went first to Alabama with their mother (Tallapoosa Co.) and perhaps their father as well. There are some marriages in Upson Co., GA (probably) and Tallapoosa Co., AL. The relevant GA counties, so far as I know, were probably Jasper, Coweta, and Upson. As you have probably found, Reid was a very common name in the southeast U.S., and the given name "John" doesn't narrow things down very much. I live in the central Texas Hill Country. At least one sub-line (Charles Lafayette Reid) moved to this area (Lometa/Lampasas) in the late 1800s. Happy to exchange detailed info with you or others.
