Over 50 years ago my grandmother spoke of her grandfather, MATTHEW REID, as a 'Pennsylvania Dutchman.' At least she was quoting what her mother said of the man's background. He died the same year my grandmother was born - 1868. Imagine my surprise when I first learned that he was born in TN and not PA. I tried, without success to make the census tabulator's TN look like a PN, but it just wasn't so. In the nearly 60 years since, I have never been able to learn anything more about him other than that he was born in TN in 1803. For some strange reason I have never looked into PA records to try to find him. Is the name REID possibly a Dutch name? If anyone has crossed his path in Pennsylvania, I would be grateful to hear of it. Respectfully Harold, Mississippi

GREETINGS IN THE TIME OF THE NEW WINTER SOLSTICE. In old Germany, wheels impacted with straw and on set fire, were rolled down a hill to encourage the Sun to complete it's night journey, to fuel the heat of the next day. Nice that it worked. This is thought to be from the Courier Journal, Varsailless, Kentucky. I am not sure where this Reid fits into the family, but, maybe there is help out there? Governor Alfred Smith, N.Y. , N.Y., was in office. Actual date unknown. Al Smith was governor, 1919-1929, his visit may have been around 1917. This could place Joseph Reid's birthday about 1830's. " At Eighty-Seven Years He never Misses His walk The other day as we were coming to work, we passed Joseph N. REID, walking with that rapid, yet easy, gliding step which reminds one of descriptions Indians following a trail. From the time the writer was a "kid", which is quite a while ago, he has met Mr. Reid many, many times and envied his manner of walking. The one thing about Versailles which has been absolutely unchanged in a lifetime (with the exception of the Big Spring), is the morning and evening walk of Mr. Reid. Before most of the inhabitants of Versailles were born, Mr. Reid was taking those walks with unfailing regularity. He takes them with unfailing regularity now. Since he began his walks, kingdoms have risen and fallen, dynasties have changed, and nearly all of the most wonderful inventions of men have been made. But, through all of these Mr. Reid has taken his daily walks .Nothing has ever sufficiently upsets the current of his life to interrupt them, unless he was too sick to get out-a most infrequent occurrence. We have come to regard those walks which all of the ????life (and very much longer, ???) As being like the changes ????. like the sunshine and??? As we have never known a time when they were not, it is difficult to conceive a time when they will cease. One of the greatest American instructors in the art of physical culture, who devised exercises taken by many thousand American citizens, was found dead in bed at the age of 65. Mr. Reid, whose exercise has been a morning and evening walk must look back to the time when he was 65 as to the days of his youth. Yet Mr. Reid has never, since we knew him, been a strong man, and we are under the impression that he was never really strong after the civil war, in which he was a brave soldier. Up to the middle age, and perhaps past that time, Mr. Reid used to walk to Lexington and back whenever he felt the need of a little more exercise. He was born and reared in Lexington coming to Versailles some years after the civil war. He was the first man to start a steam laundry in Versailles, which he and one of his sons, the late Thomas Foster Reid, conducted for a long time. Mr. Reid was also one of the best postmasters Versailles ever had. He was appointed at the request of his neighbor and warm personal friend, the late Senator, J.C.S. Blackburn, and we speak from personal knowledge when we say there was never a better one. On Thursday, September 27, Mr. Reid will be 87 years old. Probably the first thing he will do to celebrate will be to take a nice, long walk." Denver, John ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I am just getting started on researching my gggggrandmother Mary Reed that was married to John McKenzie, (her 2nd marriage). They married in 1808 in Scioto Co., Ohio. Mary was born 6 Apr 1787 in Virginia. I have a copy of her fathers estate papers from Gallia Co., Ohio. His name was Patrick Reed and her mother was Mary . Her siblings were Charles, Elsie who married Samuel McMurtry, and James, the youngest, that was married to Jane ??. That is all that is named in the estate papers but I guess could have had other children. Mary was first married to John Crow in 1804 at Gallia Co., OH. Does this sound like anything that fits into your family?? Thanks. Kind regards, Marsha Vedder
