Arnold, On the census where the Head of household name would normaly be is "Estate of William Reid". It shows no numbers for family members, but in the last column with the heading "slaves" it shows 43. I gather he has died and the census bureau listed it that way so as to show the number of slaves living at that household. That is all I can tell you. I am seeking any info concerning an Andrew Jackson "Jack" Reed was born c 1868 in Monroe Co., WV, the oldest of six children of John and Sophia Underwood Reed. He was married twice but apparently had all four of his children (Johnny, Jane, Nellie and Jimmy) during the 1890s by his first wife (a Ms, Woods ?) who apparently died c 1899, possibly in Mercer Co., WV. In any event, after the death of his first wife, Jack married again in Mercer Co., WV c 1899 to a Mattie Melvin, a Mercer Co. native. They apparently moved on to either McDowell or Summers Co. shortly thereafter, where Jack apparently took a position as a constable (policeman). In any event, Jack was apparently killed by a gunshot wound to the head sometime before 1909 - an event that some in the family have called a murder (occurring while in the line of duty), and others, an accident. Whatever the case, Jack's children apparently wound up living with Jack's father and mother in their Giles Co. home as they were enumerated with them during the 1910 Census. Any info concerning the family of descendants of either Jack Reed, or the fate of his second wife (and widow) Mattie Melvin would be very much appreciated. Thanks very much, Bob

Hi Jane and Bob, I am referring to your message on the Reid site. Your John Reid, son of Alexander, who married Mary, was my 3rd G-Granduncle. I am descended from his brother, Captain Samuel Reid. I feel you will get a lot of responses from your message because this is a very well researched line. But, it you don't, tell me what you are seeking and if I have it I will send it to you. I gained some data from your message in the spouse and family of David Reid who married Betsie Reid. I did not have that information. Do you have any ancestry for this Betsie? I contacted the people listed in the message patched in below and was informed that the individuals WOULD NOT be able to acquire their own data; but that the results of the study would be made available in a few years. Do you have information that I was not given? Will each participant received a report of their DNA? FYI -- http://molecular-genealogy.byu.edu This website is about a genealogical project undertaken by BYU. Brigham Young University is owned by the Mormon (Latter Day Saints) Church. The LDS Church operates the FHS (Family History Center) Libraries. If you are interested in learning of your genetic bloodlines or leaving information for future researchers, please go to this site and read the information. It is short and to the point. This is going to be a foolproof way of determining which REEDs/REIDs/READs are in which line (even those in England, Ireland, Scotland, etc.)! The more REEDs/REIDs/READs to participate, the better we can determine lineages. If this does not seem to been something that you care to pursue, please disregard this message.
I am seeking any immigration or birth records for an Andrew M. (Michael?) Reed / Reid/ Riedt?, who, per his Rev. War Pension Application filed in present-day Floyd Co., VA in 1835, stated that he was born "near" Philadelphia, PA on April 20 , 1750. He appears to have been the eldest son of a George Reed/Reid/Riedt (bc 1725, possibly in PA, Ireland or Germany; d 1807, Montgomery Co., VA). Our Andrew's father (George?) also appears to have married sometime during the late 1740s and moved to SW VA by c1752 - settling and residing there for the remainder of his life ~as did Andrew. To be sure, I have already seen one reference to "an" Andrew Riedt, son of a George "Riedt" of Upper Swatara, PA (located near present-day Hershey, PA), but I'm not really sure if this is "our guy as "this" George Riedt also appears to have had a daughter (Susan?) who was born in (approx.) 1753 in the same Swatara, PA area. This, in turn, would "seem" to rule this George out as our Andrew's father because of (a) our Andrew's father's (George's?) permanent presence in VA by c 1752 and (b) the fact that our Andrew did not apparently have a sister by that name - at least not one that survived or came with them to VA. In any event, any baptismal, birth or immigration-related information on an Andrew, Michael or George Reed/Reid/Riedt whose ages somewhat matches those above would be very much appreciated. I'm sure that these names were probably used a lot during the early 1720s to around 1750, but having such info could allow us to make the "long-assumed" PA connection. The names of Andrew's (younger) brothers, by the way, were apparently Peter (bc 1757) , Humphrey (bc 1758), George, Jr. (bc 1762), and William (bc 176?). Again, any info would be appreciated. Thanks very much, Bob
Hello again Don, There is a 22 Oct. 1804 Garrard Co. KY marriage bond for William Reid of Madison Co. and Sally Woods with consent provided by James Woods, father of the bride. She is most likely the daughter of James Woods and Mary Garland. Bondsman was William Woods. In the early, 1980's I corresponded with Gene Reid of Neosho, MO, a descendant of William & Sarah Reid. He listed as children of the couple: 1. Miriam Reid (I believe she married Alexander Reid Oldham), 2. Mary Reid, 3. Sylvester Reid (I believe he married Elizabeth Hubbard), 4. Elizabeth Reid, and 5. Anderson Reid. I suspect he copied that information from page 217 of Miller's book. I am not sure what the primary evidence of this list of children is. Dear List Members: Time to post my interests again. I am researching the Reid family from Tipperary, Ireland. The information I have, which has not been confirmed by proper records, is: Thomas REID (born 1812, Tipperary, Ireland, died 1895, I think in Ontario) married Elizabeth WANGHOP (died 1892, I think in Ontario) on December 8, 1835 at St. James Church, Toronto, Ontario. Thomas Reid had brothers named John C., William, James, Samuel and Joshua. Thomas came to Canada in 1831. His brothers, John, William and James followed sometime later. The children of Thomas and Elizabeth REID: James B. - born 1836 - Toronto, ON Thomas Freeman - born December 4, 1838, Etobicoke Township, York County (married Ellen LAMB, I believe of Toronto - this is possibly his second wife) William - born 1839, East Garafraxa (died young) John Clifford - born 1840, Etobicoke Township, York County, died 1925 Samuel -unknown birth year, born in East Garafraxa Hugh - unknown birth year, born in East Garafraxa, died 1890 Joshua - born 1849 in Garafraxa Robert - unknown birth year, born in Garafraxa, died 1889 Isaac - unknown birth year, born in Garafraxa Elizabeth - born around 1856 in Garafraxa (married Rev. Dr. Griffith) Also looking for information on William James REID, the son of Thomas Freeman Reid and Ellen Lamb. William James was born September 9, 1867 or 1868 in Orangeville, Ontario. He left Ontario and came out to Alberta where he joined the militia and was stationed at the Currie Barracks in Calgary. He married Jessie Drummond Lindsay of Glasgow, Scotland, on May 3, 1909 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. William and Jessie are my great grandparents. Is anyone else researching the same line? Ozy Reid, sold some land in Rushville IN., July 4, 1838. He married Rebecca Beaver, and had a son, Mathias Reid, 4 February 1839 in Rushville. No other records have been found ie, census, marriage. The son, Mathais, showed up in the census of 1850 living with John and Mary Wilmington, in Jefferson County, IA. John Wilmington, and his new wife were living one county east of Rush County, IN., in the 1840 census. This is a puzzle. Any help is very welcome.
Sorry Ellen, I have no children listed for this couple. Gordon Reid Hale Grand Prairie, Texas
