Hello. I guess this is an informal roll call, so I'd like to re-introduce myself and my research interests. My name is Mary Jo C. Martin. I grew up in New Jersey, USA, but now live permanently in Australia. I am descended from a REID family of Udny, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Following is a brief outline of two generations of these people: %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Descendants of John S. REID and Jane/Jean CUMMING Generation No. 1 1. John S. REID was born Abt. 1820 in Udny, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, parents unknown, and died Aft. 1891, place unknown. He married Jane/Jean CUMMING 8 June 1849 in Old Machar (Woodside), Aberdeenshire, Scotland, daughter of William CUMMING and Elspet McHARDY. Jane was christianed 31 March 1819 in Corgarff, Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and she died 1891 in Woodside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Children of John REID and Jane/Jean CUMMING are: i. Child of Isabel REID and Alexander PETRIE is: i. Annie PETRIE, b. March 1885, Scotland; m. I am the great-granddaughter of Gordon Davidson REID. I have been in contact with other people who also descend from REID families in Aberdeenshire, but have found no connections so far. I am very interested in communicating with anyone who is studying REIDs in Udny, Newhills and Old Machar (Woodside) and/or who might give me more ideas for future research. Best wishes, Mary Jo C. Just came across this info I had when searching for my Reid's but he wasn't mine, so thought I would pass to the list in hopes to help someone else. Biographical sketch of GEORGE V. REID from the book entitled, "Biographical Memoirs of Saint Clair County, Michigan," published in 1903 by B. F. Bowen Publishers in Logansport, Indiana. ============================================ This bio spans one (1) page: 544 GEORGE V. REID The leading livery establishment in Yale, [Michigan] is that owned by George V. Reid, who was born in Canada, in November, 1851. His parents, Robert and Susanna (Vosburg) Reid, who were also born in Canada, had a family of five children, to-wit: Cora, who is a professor in the high school at Oklahoma City; Henry and Robert, deceased; Bert is a United States soldier in the Philippines, and George V. Robert Reid came to Michigan in 1858 and settled near Yale, on eighty acres of unimproved land, on which he still lives, engaged in growing wheat, corn, oats, hay, etc., and where he has made a pleasant as well as a profitable home. He was formerly a Democrat, but now affiliates with the Republican party. Mr. And Mrs. Robert Reid are members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and Mr. Reid is a member of the Masonic lodge at Yale. George V. Reid was reared on his fathers farm from about seven years of age. In 1878 he married Miss Ellen Adams, a daughter of Alexander and Margaret Adams, natives of Scotland, who on coming to America first made their home in Canada, whence they came to Brockaway township, where Mr. Adams owns and operates an improved farm of eighty acres. His five children were: James, Ellen, Wallace, Margaret and Charles. In politics Mr. Adams is a Republican and in religion is a Presbyterian. George V. Reid was employed for sixteen years in lumbering at Saginaw, where he engaged in farming for five years in Brockaway township, and then opened his present business. He has a well selected line of rigs, suitable for all purposes, and by close attention to the demands of his patrons has secured an extensive and lucrative business. To Mr. And Mrs. Reid has been born six children: Robert, who is a clerk in a clothing store at Port Huron; Maud, wife of Glenn Ballentine, and employe (sic) in the Grand Trunk railroad shops at Port Huron; Floyd, Alex and Hazel. Fraternally Mr. Reid is a Knight of the Maccabees. This is where I found the surname and had to fill out a form then the lady typed it up and emailed me it. http://www.rootsweb.com/~bwo/michigan.html Debbie :) Searching for William A. I have recently found some notes written by my GG-Uncle Walton Scott "Jack" Reid who was born in 1904 in Hart County, KY. His father was William Cornelius Reid; born July 1, 1844 near Lancaster, OH; married Lucy Ann Coleman on Dec. 6, 1877, in Gainesville, KY; died Dec. 8, 1906, in Canmer, Hart County, KY. He and Lucy raised 11 children in Hart Co. William's father (according to Uncle Jack's notes) was "William Reid; born in Scotland; married Mary Shields? (born in OH); died about 1896 in Barren Co., KY; believed to be buried in a small community near Glasgow in Barren Co., KY. He was a Baptist Minister and a Medical Doctor who originally settled in Hagerstown, MD, from Scotland. Then moved on to Utica, OH, at one time lived in Columbus, OH, then to KY. Does this connect to anyone, or does anyone have any info to corroborate Uncle Jack's notes? Thanks, Christy Bennett
Mary, I have been working on the very large Reid family that was in the Rockfish River area of Virginia from 1740 to 1805. This area was part of Amherst County for much of that period. I have been aware of the marriage bond of Jocob Reid or Reed and Elizabeth Staton, but I know of no link between him and the Reids of the Rockfish River area. Joseph and Margaret had a son, James Warren REID, b. 14 Sept. 1849, in N.B. James Warren Reid married Mary CLONEY, unknown date and place; their first child was born in 1873. The Cloneys lived in the Brockway, York Co., area and later migrated to Charlotte Co., N.B. James and Mary (Cloney) Reid immigrated to Eureka, Humboldt Co., CA c. 1877.
