Hello Robert Cowan and thank you for for your very interesting posting of March 20th. My Derry ancestors don't fit into those you are researching, but still they too are part of the great Celtic dispersal which was the leading edge of the spead of the English speaking world. I will be pleased to hear how your research progresses and I look forward to see updates from time to time on this list. Slainte Greg in Raumati New Zealand --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hi, I am trying to find Reid's who came to the US in about 1895. My Grandfather was Thomas Jefferson Reid and he came from Essux, England. His mother's name was Cordellia Ramsey. Do you know anything of this family? Grandfather had about 12 brothers and sisters who migrated all over the country. We are from the Southwestern part of Pa. Sincerely, Karen Reid Trettel
You should go back to Kaye and have her produce a GEDCOM especially for PAF. FTM has so many peculiarities that are not recognized by PAF and if the GEDCOM is not produced specifically for PAF there will indeed be many errors. Even when Produced specifically for PAF there will still be some errors. I am trying to open the CD that Kaye sent me, which is a FTW gedcom, into my PAF file that I use. I get over 60,000 error messages without anything showing in the PAF file. Does anyone else on this site use PAF? Has anyone else had a similar experience? If so, how did you solve it? PAF is Personal Ancestral File which is produced by the Latter Day Saints and FTW is Family Tree Maker. Thanks for reading. Gordon Reid Hale

From Chapter 1 of Alexander Lecky's 1905 book, "The Laggan and its Presbyterianism we find the following description of the district know as the LAGGAN: "On looking at a map of the County Donegal, it will be seen that the north-eastern part of the county, which is the most northerly part of Ireland, is a peninsula washed on the eastern side by the waters of Lough Foyle and on the western by Lough Swilly. This is Inishowen, a mountainous and, to a large extent, a barren country. Immediately to the south of it is a fertile and comparatively flat country, lying between the river Foyle and the upper reaches of Lough Swilly, and extending in one direction from the City of Derry to Stranorlar, and in another from Lifford to Letterkenny. This is the district which in by-gone times was known under the name of THE LAGGAN, and formed the most productive and desireable portion of the ancient territory of Tyrconnell..." This is also where many of my ancestors and yours came from; Defenders of Derry during the great siege, the defining moment in Ulster Protestant history. To an Ulsterman the Siege of Londonderry is what the War Between the States is to an American. Shortly after this event great waves of Derrymen left for America, first settling in Pennsylvania and then moving down the Valley of Virginia and into the Carolinas. This genealogical connection between the families of those who fought at Derry and those who settled in Augusta/Rockbridge counties Virgina and the Settlement of the Northwest Carolina Frontier (Carolina Cradle by Ramsey) eventually reaches a climax on a little mountain in North Carolina on October 7, 1780. This is the area of history that myself and fellow researcher John Giocoletti from Florida have always wanted to explore in detail. This June we will be travelling to Derry and Belfast for some extended research into the family histories of those names that appear both in the records of the Laggan and at King's Mountain. Lecky's two books, "The Laggan and its Presbyterianism," and "In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery," published in 1905 and 1908 Belfast, Davidson & McCormack, North Gate Works, are a must for anyone wanting to discover their Ulster roots. The books real value for the genealogist is in the Appendix which is divided into several parts, the most important being the following: "The following are the names of men who attended the meetings of the Laggan Presbytery between the years 1672 and 1700, as ruling elders or as commissioners, together with the names of the congregations which they represented. They were doubtless the leading men in the districts in which they lived..." These lists are by Parish and I will give a couple of examples: Taboyn: Matthew Lindsay, John Aikine, Alexander Houston, Robert Cowan, Archibald Alexander, Robert Scott, Wm. Mackie, Wm. Bell, Robert M'Clellan, Richard Armstrong, Richard Moore, John Kilgore, Wm. Inglis, John Gay, John Harvey, David Paterson, George Brown, Robert Moore, James Marshall, John Graham Raphoe: Joseph Henderson, Edward Hervies, William Mills, Michael Henderson, Robert Anderson, Patrick Bell, Robert Dick, Alexander Stuart, William Ramsay, James Laird, Robert Walker, John M'Clure, Robert Gray, John Sproul Londonderry: John Craig, William Cunningham, John Campsie, William Rodger, James Fisher, Horace Kennedy, James Wilson, William Macky, James Lennox, William Smith, John Cowan, Alexander Lecky, William Davidsson, James Wallace, George Henderson, others In addition to the ruling elders there is a list of people from the Hearth Money rolls of 1665 by Parish and TOWNLAND which places a person in an area sometimes as small as a few acres. These lists are important when comparing names with the early landowners of Augusta county or the Baptismal records of the the Rev. Craig at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church or the early settlers of the Yadkin settlement in Rowan county, North Carolina. I will be willing to furnish copies of these two books for a limited time to researchers who want to explore their Ulster genealogy. Many of you purchased copies of Professor Hagy's thesis, "Castle's Woods; Frontier Virginia Settlement" and I have received numerous e-mails about the quality of that document. I believe these two books by Lecky are superior in the information contained and if you would like a copy please contact me privately at [email protected] for the details. Any information John and I discover specific to your surname will be posted on the appropriate list after our return from Ireland. I will provide a list of surnames that have "made the cut" so far, the requirements being that the family is found in Derry and also found at King's Mountain. Any suggestions for additional names will be considered as long as the request is substantiated with a reasonable amount of documentation. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105 Names on the list so far: Alexander, Anderson, Bell, Black, Blair, Brown, Buchanan, Campbell, Cowan, Craig, Cunningham, Denniston, Edmondson, Finley, Fleming, Gillespie, Graham, Hamilton, Houston, Irvin, Kilgore, King, Knox, Lindsay, McClure, Maxwell, Moffatt, Montgomery, Moore, Ramsay, Robinson, Russell, Scott, Steele, Stewart/Stuart, Thompson, Walker, Weir, Young spellings may vary John and I will stay in touch with the various lists as best we can. It will not be possible to remain of all the surname lists all the time for obvious reasons. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have any suggestions or questions. This may make a nice book one day.

Hello, I misplaced the e-mail address of Sam Fraser Reid, Jr. of S.C. I am hoping that you are on the list. Just wanted to say THANKS for the information. Also, did anyone find Hugh Reid of Abbeville County, SC in the 1810 and 1820 census. If so, would you mind forwarding me that information of his household - free white and slaves. He died in 1829...married to Margaret Reid, daughter of George Reid. Also, I have another question: In the estate packet of George Reid (Box 109, Pkg 3119, microfilm # AB51), the packet only contained his will (written 1786). According to the Archives film guide at the S.C. Archives Dept., there is another record, not at the Archive, but it may be at the County Courthouse.......George Reid, Box 313, Pkg 7792. Does anyone know what information or documents were in this particular packet? Thanks, Mel
Hi 'Reid Family Researchers' ~ ~ I am searching for the parents and siblings of William Andrew Reid ~ born 18 May 1855 in Perry County, Alabama. He married Sarah Frances Lovelady 6 Jan 1878 in Perry County, Alabama. She was the daughter of William Morgan and Sarah (Fulton) Lovelady Jr. William Andrew's death certificate lists his father as William W. Reid ~ ~ I continue to hit a 'brick wall' when looking for William W. The 1880 census listed William Andrew's parents as born in Alabama. They had eleven children. Martha, Mary Q. (my husband's grandmother.) Lula and John born in Alabama. William, Sarah and their children migrated from Selma, Alabama to Mississippi about 1889 where Lillie and Versa were born. Between 1893 and 1898 the migrated to Polk County, Arkansas with the Hawks Wagon group. Myrtle Ola and Arminda were born in Arkansas; three infants names unknown. Do any of you have any information on this family? Thank you very much, Shirley Gentry http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=gentle

Re: REIDS Regarding Thomas Reid, I don't know whether or not he remained in Canada or not. I have only begun to investigate the REIDS. Did your Thomas have siblings? Did he originate in Dunfermline Scotland? Lisa in Canada
Hi Lisa, Did Your Thomas stay in Canada, or did they by any chance come to the Pittsburgh, Pa area? [email protected]
Hello all. Thanks to those who responded off List. I am very pleased to have received your emails. They are all very interesting and encouraging. I thought that I should share my basic reply about my family with the List just in case the names ring a bell somewhere. Here goes. As far as I know this is a Catholic family. Michael Reid married Margaret Barlow somewhere in Derry(?) before 1819. I know of only one child, Bernard who was born in that year. Bernard married Mary (O)Rielly some time between 1838 and 1846. Our information is conflicting and no parish or civil record has been found. Bernard and Mary had seven children that we know of. I have a suspicion there could be at least one other child that we do not know about who was born before Michael in 1847. Michael is my g.grandfather. Bernard, Mary and the seven children along with nine grandchildren migrated to New Zealand on three ships in 1874 and 1875. The other children are Patrick Robert b. 1848, Mary-Jane b. 1850, Margaret b. 1852, John Bernard b.1852, Ellen Alice b. 1854, and Hugh b.1856. Margaret and John were twins. The family settled in the far south of the South Island where many of their descendants still live. (Not me). I have a record of 1600 descendants of Michael and Margaret and I am finding more all the time. They certainly were a prolific lot in the early days her in this country. My g.grandfather Michael married Agnes Louise Barlow, 20 Oct 1866, at Mullahinch Parish, Aghadowey, Coleraine, Derry. It is not known if Agnes and Margaret were related. The father of Agnes is Richard, and he was a minor land owner at Aghadowey. His wife's name is not known. Bernard's in-laws were Michael (O)Rielly and Catherine Hogan. Catherine was born in Mullinger Westmeath. Regards to all Greg in Raumati New Zealand. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
