Looking for information on James REID who was married to Margaret CHALMERS and lived in Connellsville, PA in 1880. Need to find this couple in the census of 1870, probably in Connellsville. Also need immigration information on them from Scotland. They are buried in Hill Grove Cemetery in Connellsville. Need date of death. Can anyone help? I would appreciate hearing from you. The Andrew Reid in question held the Rank of General and was for many years the clerk of Rockbridge Co., VA. He was born 13 February 1751 in Amherst Co., VA, to Andrew Reid, Jr. and Sarah Reid, both of whom were first cousins and neighbors to my ancestor Alexander Reid, Sr., of Amherst Co. Andrew Reid and Magalene McDowell were married 4 March 1776 in Rockbridge Co. and he died in October of 1837 in the same county. My family was DODD and we have been unable to find the mothers maiden name. The father was jonathan DODD and hers is Loucendia (?) unknown. TWO of the sons of this old man jonathan dodd married women of the CAVE family of Barnwell SC-alabama and mississippi. Jonathan born 1784. If you will go into clark co, alabama? you will find a marriage of a loucendia cave Read (Reed-Reid). This woman had a sister, Louisa cave who married a man named anthony rabon and the loucendia cave (the twin sister to louisa) married the john Reid in clark co.alabama around 1830 ish. the two dates are the same date. Now if you are following me thus far---we have a sister cave rabon and a sister cave reid and a mother in law loucendia (unknown maiden name)? Here is where the legend enters: These core DODD/CAVE/RABON/Reed-Reid-Reade) families were in Clark co. alabama, washington co. alabama and Choctawco. alabama in the 1840-50 and 60 census. Some McDOWELL families of the same area say that the mother in law-loucendia DODD was actually a loucendia MARTIN who married a McDOWELL man??? and raised her children as DODD men and they may or may not have gone back to MdDowell after 1860? As the DODD, William, Henry and Isaac names are also common to the MCDOWELL william, henry and Isaac. There are MCDowell families living with, around and near, Reid people , in clark co.alabama. The 1850-1860 census are on line--but be aware they do NOT show these "live in "family members on the transcriptions. YOU will have to go to the Digital images or the microfilm to find the exact names, dates and places. My names don't match your names--however, how many times can you find a MCDowell name mentioned with a REID? I try to track these leads and have been unable to locate anything past the clark co. 1860 census AND the marriages. MY DODD cave families went to texas before 1860. But we are sure that the cave/reid marriage is the twin sister to my gg granny lucy ann (louisa) cave rabon dodd autry. I am told there are McDowell graves in Bladon Springs Alabama. Lots of McDowell people in that area. I wish you good luck. judy hugg grimes

For approximately three weeks in May and June John Giacoletti and I made a research trip to Northern Ireland to gather information on some of the Defenders of Derry. I said I would post our findings to the various lists that had been contacted prior to our departure. To view all of our posts please go to the rootsweb.com main page and find the link to "threaded archives" Type in COWAN and search June and July 2002 and you will find some really interesting posts describing our research adventures. If you have any comments or questions please feel free to contact me at [email protected] Prior to the trip I offered four obscure, out-of-print publications that should be included in every Ulster Presbyterian's genealogical library. They all have either expired copyright provisions or, in the case of the Hagy thesis, I have the author's permission to reproduce the document. The publications are: "The Laggan and its Presbyterianism" and "In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery," 1905,1908, by the Rev. Alexander Lecky, B.A. member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Belfast 211 pages We met JB Shannon, age 90, who assisted in the 1975 reprint and he said these books are still the BEST source for Ulster Presbyterian research. Books contain lists of former generations of Lagganeers, and their places of abode, which have never before appeared in print. "Fighters of Derry, Their Deeds and Descendants, being a Chronicle of Events in Ireland during the Revolutionary period 1688-1691," by William R. Young, 1932, Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, 350 pages. One of the most difficult sources to locate, in fact almost impossible. Contains biographical sketches (1200+) of the Defenders of Derry "A History of the Siege of Londonderry and Defence of Enniskillen in 1688 and 1689, with Historical Poetry and Biographical Notes," by the Rev. John Graham, M.A. Rector of Magilligan in the Diocese of Derry. Includes the Battles of the Boyne, Athlone, and Aughrim and the siege and capitulation of Limmerick by Lord Macaulay, Toronto, 1869 311 pages. Full of genealogical information about the families who were at Derry. "Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799, a thesis presented to the Faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts, by James Hagy, 1966, 150 pages. The most popular of the documents offered, this covers the families who settled in Russell county, Virginia when it was considered the frontier. And a new addition: "The Tinkling Spring, Headwater of Freedom" A Study of the Church and Her People, Howard McKnight Wilson, Fisherville, 1954 This book contains more genealogy of the early settlers of Augusta/Rockbridge Counties Virginia than any other. Baptismal records of the Rev. Craig and detailed analysis of many of the early families from the 1740's on. Please contact me privately at [email protected] for details on how to acquire these materials. It is very slow and cumbersome to contact each list individually so in the future I will be putting these and other items I deem valuable on abebooks.com Once again, I will be happy to answer any questions that have to do with the migration of Scots-Irish people from Ulster to Pa, Virginia and Tennessee. But remember, I probably don't know who your mamma is, I had a hard enough time figuring out who mine was. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105

Hello, Can anyone tell me how to get to the "Reid Place", the original home of Lemuel Reid and also his father, Samuel Reid, of Abbeville County, South Carolina. According to the book by Wayne Reid entitled, "The Diary of Lemuel Reid", this house is still standing several miles north of Abbeville. Also, can anyone tell me how to get to the Upper Long Cane Presbyterian Church near Abbeville, South Carolina. This is the church that Dr. William H. Barr was the pastor from 1809 to 1843. He and his wife, Rebecca Reid, are buried there. Also, can anyone tell me how to get to the area where Hugh Reid lived. Hugh Reid was the father of Rebecca Barr, Samuel Reid, and others. He died in 1829 in Abbeville County. He was married to Margaret Reid, daughter of George Reid. I am very interested in getting directions to the area where the Reid and Barr family lived. Members of my family want to tour the area very soon. I would greatly appreciate it! Much Thanks! Melvin
