I do not know when the change from Reeve to Reeves occurred, but a Robert Reeves in Greenport, LI told me years ago a story of two brothers who had a falling out, and one of them added the ‘S’ to his name, but he said he had no confirmation of the story. I’ll be glad to furnish copies of the George Reeves MS which contains much more info re siblings, etc., including why James was the husband of Mary Purrier, rather than Thomas.
