My oldest and only Reeves ancestor in a tree of over 3700 in my g-g-g-grandmother, Barbara (Barbary) Reeves, born ca 1777, place unknown. She married William McElvy on April 23, 1799, place unknown. The marriage date is in the McElvy family Bible originally owned by William & Barbara Reeves McElvy. In L. W. Rigsby's "Historic Georgia Families", he has them married on April 23, 1799 in Dublin, Ireland and arriving in America shortly after. His only documentation is for the marriage date that was gleaned from the family Bible. Barbara Reeves McElvy died, according to the family Bible, on February 5, 1838. Her grave site is located just south of Bainbridge, Decatur Co, GA where they lived for many years. In a letter written by William McElvy in 1839, he gives the impression that both he and Barbara were born in America. Their first child was born in America in 1800. They were in Burke Co, GA. then. They were in Tattnall Co, GA in the early 1800's and then in Decatur Co, GA by 1822. In the Augusta Chronicle published in Augusta, Georgia, there is a notice showing William McElvey was appointed the administrator of the estate of George Reeves on December 21, 1803, in Burke County. This gives the impression that George Reeves could possible be a relative to Barbara. Maybe her father??? There are other Reeves in the same area that may be relatives to Barbara. They were Joseph, Francis and John. Common family names for William McElvy & Barbara Reeves McElvy were George, Francis and John. I have not found a single clue as to Barbara (Barbary) Reeves McElvy's ancestry. Nor have I found a single descendant with the Reeves surname. I have hundreds of her descendants with the McElvy surname as well as other surnames, but none with the Reeves surnames. A desperate Reeves descendant, Liz Gerlits Palm Bay, FL
